  • Spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were successfully prepared from petroleum or coal pyrolysis residues. After pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO), slurry oil, and coal tar were simply filtered to eliminate the solid impurities, the characteristics of the raw materials were evaluated by elemental analysis, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), and so on. Spinnable pitches were prepared for melt-spinning carbon fiber through a simple distillation under strong nitrogen flow, and further vacuum distillation to obtain a high softening point. Carbon fibers were produced from the above pitches by single-hole melt spinning and additional heat treatment, for oxidization and carbonization. Even though spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were processed under the same conditions, the melt-spinning and properties of the carbon fiber were different depending on the raw materials. A fine carbon fiber could not be prepared from slurry oil, and the different diameter carbon fibers were produced from the PFO and coal tar pitch. These results seem to be closely correlated with the initial characteristics of the raw materials, under this simple processing condition.

  • In this study, we evaluated black pepper seed and white pepper seed for the following compounds: piperine content was determined by HPLC, and volatile oil content was determined via the Soxhlet method in before/after heat-treated samples, and total volatile material contents were determined via the SDE(Linkens-Nikens type simultaneous steam distillation and extraction apparatus) method. As a result, differences were noted in the black and white pepper seeds according to the constituent components, growing district, and whether the species was indigenous to Indonesia or India. We concluded that the differences in taste were attributable to the differences in the volatile material contents in black and white peppers. We also assessed these three determination results, and found that they were directly correlated. The volatile oil contents were determined by the Soxhlet method, which was a rapid, simple, and accurate method. We concluded that this method should prove to be an effective determination method in the quality control of black and white peppers.

  • This paper proposed a shortcut method for the structure design of dividing wall column based on the Fen-ske-Underwood equation by applying it on three conventional simple column configuration. It is shown that the proposed shortcut method can design the column structure including the feed tray, dividing wall section, and side-stream tray in a simple and efficient way in the initial design stage. Simulation study using HYSYS to compare the energy saving performance between the conventional sequential two column system and the dividing wall column designed by the proposed method shows that the proposed dividing wall column system saves from 16% to 65% more over the condepends on the composition of intermediate component while the optimal energy consumption pattern to internal flow distribution on the dividing wall section is characterized by the ESI factor of the feed mixture.

  • In this paper, wireless internet proxy server clusters are used for the wireless internet because their caching, distillation, and clustering functions are helpful to overcome the limitations and needs of the wireless internet. A wireless Internet proxy server cluster needs a systematic scalability, simple communication structure, cooperative caching, and serving Hot Spot requests. In our former research, we proposed the CD-A structure which can be scalable in a systematic way and has a simple communication structure but it has no cooperative caching. A hash based load balancing can be used to solve the problem, but it can not deal with Hot Spot request problem. In this paper, we proposed a shared storage based wireless internet proxy server cluster which has a systematic scalability, simple communication structure, cooperative caching, and serving Hot Spot requests. The proposed method shares one cache directory and it has advantages: advantages of the existing CD-A structure, cooperative caching, and serving Hot Spot requests. We performed experiments using 16 PCs and experimental results show high performance improvement of the proposed system compared to the existing systems in Hot Spot requests.

  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fibers are widely used in the textile industry, filter media, membrane distillation, electronic appliances, and construction. In this study, PTFE-polyethylene oxide (PEO) fibrous membranes were fabricated by emulsion electrospinning; subsequently, pure PTFE nanofibers were obtained via sintering. PTFE-PEO electrospinning solutions were prepared using different weight ratios to determine the optimized condition. As the ratio of the PEO increased, the fiber structure improved. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy observations indicate that PEO is removed and PTFE fused gradually to form bonds among them during sintering. The obtained pristine PTFE membrane demonstrated hydrophobicity at 143.6° water contact angle and oleophilicity at 0° oil contact angle, which is known to be utilized for oil/water separation. A simple separation experiment was performed to remove oil droplets from water. The PTFE membrane exhibited good chemical stability and a high surface-area-to-volume nanofiber ratio. These excellent properties suggest that it is applicable to oil/water separation in harsh chemical environments.

  • Essential oil components from tobacco powder were investigated as flavouring agent. The essential oil was isolated from tobacco powder by a simple distillation /extraction method The extracted essential oil was fractionated into basic, acidic and neutral groups. And the neutral group of essential oil was separated by column chromatography into 10 fractions. Above groups and fractions were tested for tobacco aroma and smoke aroma. The neutral group except most nonpolar fraction displays good flavouring properties which make them highly suitable for improving the flavour and aroma of tobacco and tobacco smoke. The most nonpolar fraction from neutral group was carefully investigated using preparative column, thin layer and gas chromatography ailed by GC/MS coupling. The major subfraction was identified as hydrocarbons on the basis of the IR spectrum. The 58 hydrocarbon components were identified by their mass spectra and was chromatographic retention times.

  • New simple methods for the Isolation of sesquiterpenes from Panax ginseng were developed. First, volatile compounds were isolated by simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE) with 30% methanol and $\alpha$-hexane instead of water and ethyl ether/pentane (1:1). Secondly, head space volatiles in U-shaped tube at 7$0^{\circ}C$ were passed through C18 Sep-Pak by nitrogen gas streaming and the adsorbed volatiles were fluted by $\alpha$-hexane. TLC analysis showed that the volatile concentrates consisted mainly of terpenes when colored by vanillin-sulfuric and. GC/MS data revealed that approximately 30 sesquiterpenes of molecular weight 204 occupied 81.1% or more of the volatile concentrates isolated by those two newly developed methods. Among these, alloaromadendrene, germacrene B, isocaryophyllene, $\alpha$-neoclovene, ${\gamma}$-muurolene, $\beta$-panaslnsene, and $\alpha$-humulene were identified as being major sesqulterpenes by authentic samples or literatme search Key words : Panax ginseng, volatile compound, sesquiterpene, isolation, new method, GC/MS.

  • Pitch is an attractive raw material for carbon fiber precursors due to its low cost stemming from its availability as a residue of coking and petroleum processes. Ford Motor Company reported a carbon fiber target price of $11.0/kg by using a fast cycle-time manufacturing method with carbon fiber in an inexpensive format, allowing for an average retail price of gasoline of $3.58/gallon. They also recommended the use of carbon fiber with strength of 1700 MPa, modulus of 170 GPa, and 1.5% elongation. This study introduced a ca. $5.5{\mu}m$ carbon fiber with 2000 MPa tensile strength obtained from a precursor through simple distillation of petroleum residue. Petroleum pitch based carbon nanofibers prepared via electrospinning were characterized and potential applications were introduced on the basis of their large specific surface area and relatively high electrical conductivity.

  • An investigation has been performed to find an effective separation method of steriols and tocopherols from the deodorized condensates of vegetable oils. Simple heating of the starting mixture isolated the oil layer from water, and the former was collected. It was then methyl esterified followed by a distillation for the removal of fatty acid. The ensuing step was to saponify the residue. The unsaponifiable matter was extracted by both methanol and concentrated. The sterol was crystallized by cooling such concentrated solution. To obtain tocopherol, the mother liquor was first dissolved in methanol. Cooling this solution to $-20^{\circ}C$ trapped fatty acid which was filtered out. The filtrate was then treated with ion exchange resin.
