Feature-based similarity retrieval become an important research issue in image database systems. The features of image data are useful to discrimination of images. In this paper, we propose the high speed k-Nearest Neighbor search algorithm based on Self-Organizing Maps. Self-Organizing Maps(SOM) provides a mapping from high dimensional feature vectors onto a two-dimensional space and generates a topological feature map. A topological feature map preserves the mutual relations (similarities) in feature spaces of input data, and clusters mutually similar feature vectors in a neighboring nodes. Therefore each node of the topological feature map holds a node vector and similar images that is closest to each node vector. We implemented a k-NN search for similar image classification as to (1) access to topological feature map, and (2) apply to pruning strategy of high speed search. We experiment on the performance of our algorithm using color feature vectors extracted from images. Promising results have been obtained in experiments.
In web search engines, there are two main methods: directory searching and keyword searching. Keyword searching shows high recall rate but tends to come up with too many search results to find which users want to see the pages. Directory searching has also a difficulty to find the pages that users want in case of selecting improper category without knowing the exact category, that is, it shows high precision rates but low recall rates. We designed and implemented a new web search engine to resolve the problems of directory search method. It regards a category as a fuzzy set which contains keywords and calculate the degree of inclusion between categories. The merit of this method is to enhance the recall rate of directory searching by expanding subcategories on the basis of similarity.
Patent information search is used for checking existence of earlier works. In patent information search, there are many reasons that fails to get appropriate information. This research proposes a method extracting alternative word candidates in order to minimize search failure due to keyword mismatch. Assuming that two words have similar meaning if they have similar co-occurrence words, the proposed method uses the concept of concentration, association word set, cosine similarity between association word sets and a ranking modification technique. Performance of the proposed method is evaluated using a manually extracted alternative word candidate list. Evaluation results show that the proposed method outperforms the document vector space model in recall.
It is the aim of this paper to find the requisites for the target problem solving process in reference to the base problem and to search the roles of those. Focusing on the structural similarity, analytic activity and comparative activity in stage of similar mathematical problem solving process, we tried to find the roles of them. We observed closely how four students solve the target problem in reference to the base problem. And so we got the following conclusions. The insight of structural similarity prepare the ground appling the solving method of base problem in the process solving the target problem. And we knew that the analytic activity can become the instrument which find out the truth about the guess. Finally the comparative activity can set up the direction of solution of the target problem. Thus we knew that the insight of structural similarity, the analytic activity and the comparative activity are necessary for similar mathematical problem to solve. We think that it requires the efforts to develop the various programs about teaching-learning method focusing on the structural similarity, analytic activity and comparative activity in stage of similar mathematical problem solving process. And we also think that it needs the study to research the roles of other elements for similar mathematical problem solving but to find the roles of the structural similarity, analytic activity and comparative activity.

Recently, the filtering approach using vector approximation such as VA-file[1] or LPC-file[2] have been proposed to support similarity search in high dimensional data space. This approach filters out many irrelevant vectors by calculating the approximate distance from a query vector using the compact approximations of vectors in database. Accordingly, the total elapsed time for similarity search is reduced because the disk I/O time is eliminated by reading the compact approximations instead of original vectors. However, the search time of the VA-file or LPC-file is not much lessened compared to the brute-force search because it requires a lot of computations for calculating the approximate distance. This paper proposes a new bitmap index structure in order to minimize the calculating time. To improve the calculating speed, a specific value of an object is saved in a bit pattern that shows a spatial position of the feature vector on a data space, and the calculation for a distance between objects is performed by the XOR bit calculation that is much faster than the real vector calculation. According to the experiment, the method that this paper suggests has shortened the total searching time to the extent of about one fourth of the sequential searching time, and to the utmost two times of the existing methods by shortening the great deal of calculating time, although this method has a longer data reading time compared to the existing vector approximation based approach. Consequently, it can be confirmed that we can improve even more the searching performance by shortening the calculating time for filtering of the existing vector approximation methods when the database speed is fast enough.
Database community focuses on the similar music retrieval systems for music database when a humming query is given. One of the approaches is converting the midi data to time series, building their indices and performing the similarity search on them. Queries based on humming can be transformed to time series by using the known pitch detection algorithms. The recently suggested algorithm, scaled and warped matching, is based on dynamic time warping and uniform scaling. This paper proposes Humming BIRD(Humming Based sImilaR mini music retrieval system) using sliding window and center-aligned scaled and warped matching. Center-aligned scaled and warped matching is a mixed distance measure of center-aligned uniform scaling and time warping. The newly proposed measure gives tighter lower bound than previous ones which results in reduced search space. The empirical results show the superiority of this algorithm comparing the pruning power while it returns the same results.
The World Wide Web has become an entrenched global medium for storing and searching information. Most people begin at a Web search engine to find information, but the user's pertinent search results are often greatly diluted by irrelevant data or sometimes appear on target but still mislead the user in an unwanted direction. One of the intentional, sometimes vicious manipulations of Web databases is Web spamming as Google bombing that is based on the PageRank algorithm, one of the most famous Web structuring techniques. In this paper, we regard the Web as a directed labeled graph that Web pages represent nodes and the corresponding hyperlinks edges. In the present work, we define the label of an edge as having a link context and a similarity measure between link context and the target page. With this similarity, we can modify the transition matrix of the PageRank algorithm. A motivating example is investigated in terms of the Singular Value Decomposition with which our algorithm can outperform to filter the Web spamming pages effectively.
Similarity matching in video database is of growing importance in many new applications such as video clustering and digital video libraries. In order to provide efficient access to relevant data in large databases, there have been many research efforts in video indexing with diverse spatial and temporal features. however, most of the previous works relied on sequential matching methods or memory-based inverted file techniques, thus making them unsuitable for a large volume of video databases. In order to resolve this problem, this paper proposes an effective and scalable indexing technique using a trie, originally proposed for string matching, as an index structure. For building an index, we convert each frame into a symbol sequence using a window order heuristic and build a disk-resident trie from a set of symbol sequences. For query processing, we perform a depth-first search on the trie and execute a temporal segmentation. To verify the superiority of our approach, we perform several experiments with real and synthetic data sets. The results reveal that our approach consistently outperforms the sequential scan method, and the performance gain is maintained even with a large volume of video databases.

In this paper, classification feature is selected with focus of musical content, note sequences pattern, and measures similarity between note sequences followed by constructing clusters by similar note sequences, which is easier for users to search by showing the similar note sequences with the search result in the CBMR system. Experimental document was $\ulcorner$A Dictionary of Musical Themes$\lrcorner$, the index of theme bar focused on classical music and obtained kern-type file. Humdrum Toolkit version 1.0 was used as note sequences treat tool. The hierarchical clustering method is by stages focused on four-type similarity matrices by whether the note sequences segmentation or not and where the starting point is. For the measurement of the result, WACS standard is used in the case of being manual classification and in the case of the note sequences starling from any point in the note sequences, there is used common feature pattern distribution in the cluster obtained from the clustering result. According to the result, clustering with segmented feature unconnected with the starting point Is higher with distinct difference compared with clustering with non-segmented feature.

It is a challenge for the current security industry to respond to a large number of malicious codes distributed indiscriminately as well as intelligent APT attacks. As a result, studies using machine learning algorithms are being conducted as proactive prevention rather than post processing. The k-NN algorithm is widely used because it is intuitive and suitable for handling malicious code as unstructured data. In addition, in the malicious code analysis domain, the k-NN algorithm is easy to classify malicious codes based on previously analyzed malicious codes. For example, it is possible to classify malicious code families or analyze malicious code variants through similarity analysis with existing malicious codes. However, the main disadvantage of the k-NN algorithm is that the search time increases as the learning data increases. We propose a fast k-NN algorithm which improves the computation speed problem while taking the value of the k-NN algorithm. In the test environment, the k-NN algorithm was able to perform with only the comparison of the average of similarity of 19.71 times for 6.25 million malicious codes. Considering the way the algorithm works, Fast k-NN algorithm can also be used to search all data that can be vectorized as well as malware and SSDEEP. In the future, it is expected that if the k-NN approach is needed, and the central node can be effectively selected for clustering of large amount of data in various environments, it will be possible to design a sophisticated machine learning based system.
