A smart glass fiber reinforced polymer (SMFRP) reinforcing bar with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor was fabricated using a pultrusion technique, while ribs were formed to improve bonding between concrete and SMFRP. Then, strain of SMFRP bars were measured for a uniaxial tension test of an SMFRP bar, and a four-point bending test of concrete beams reinforced with SMFRP bars. The results of a uniaxial tension test illustrate that the strain obtained from an FBG sensor agrees well with that obtained from electrical resistance strain gauge (ERSG). Additionally, concrete beams reinforced with SMFRP bars were fabricated, and actual flexural test were performed while the strain of with an FBG sensor was compared with that of ERSG. The experimental results demonstrate that SMFRP bars can be used as reinforcement of concrete member while providing deformation information. Furthermore, SMFRP bars may provide stronger durability and smart monitoring to reinforced concrete members under corrosive environments during a service life.
An effect is made in this study to deepen understanding of small punch(SP) creep testing which has been a round for about 10 years as a substitute for the conventional uniaxial creep testing. Even though considerable numbers of SP creep test program have been performed, most of the tests were aimed at measuring creep rupture lives only. Very flew studies showed interest on the meaning of what we were really measuring during the SP creep tests. In this paper meanings of the parameters measured during the SP creep testing, such as punch load and punch displacement rate are investigated using finite element analysis. It was shown that the measured parameters must represent the stress and strain rates of the material at the annular region located at about 0.65 mm from the center of the SP specimen. The material in this location would go through constant maximum stress and strain rate during the testing. Experimental verification is also discussed.
The Characteristics of the drag reduction of a square prism having a detached splitter plate at the wake side was investigated by measuring of fluid force on the square prism and by visualization of the field using PIV. The experimental parameters were the width ratios(H/B=0.5~1.5) of splitters to the prism width and the gap ratios (G/B=0~2) between the prism and the splitter plate. The drag reduction rate was increased with H/B, and was increased and decreased with G/B. The maximum drag reduction rate was represented by 24.2% at H/B=1.5 and G/B=0.5. The two vortices were generated by the splitter plate at the wake region of the prism. The direction of the vortex was clockwise at the upside of the splitter plate and counterclockwise at the downside.
In this study, corrosion fatigue characteristics of CF8M and CF8A steel were investigated on the simulated PWR condition(Temp.:$316^{\circ}C$, Pres.: 15:MPa). To make the simulated PWR condition. the special test machine consisted of INSTRON, Autoclave, LOOP and Measurement system was developed. As ${\Delta}K$ is ranged from 11 to $20MPa{\sqrt{m}}$, Crack growth rate of PWR condition is faster than air condition. Above $20MPa{\sqrt{m}}$, the crack growth rate of PWR and air condition is similar. Corrosion fatigue characteristics regardless of the ferrite contents($10{\sim}25wt.%$) is not different. After the test, the fracture surface of specimens was examined. It was difficult to verify the fracture modes such as striation, intergranular crack and cleavage and so on. As the ferrite content of CF8M is increased, the more particles covered fracture surface were peeled.
Excavators are versatile earthmoving equipment that are used in civil engineering, hydraulic engineering, grading and landscaping, pipeline construction and mining. Effective operator training is essential to ensure safe and efficient operating of the machine. The virtual reality excavator based on simulation using conventional large size monitors is limited by the inability to provide a realistic real world training experience. We proposed a flexible observation method with a head tracking system to improve user feeling and sensation when operating a virtual reality excavator. First, an excavation simulator is designed by combining an excavator SimMechanics model and the virtual world. Second, a head mounted display (HMD) device is presented to replace the cumbersome large screens. Moreover, an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor is mounted to the HMD for tracking the movement of the operator's head. These signals consequently change the virtual viewpoint of the virtual reality excavator. Simulation results were used to analyze the performance of the proposed system.
In this study, the static and dynamic characteristics of endmilling process were modelled and the analytic realization of chatter mechanism was discussed. In this reward, We have discussed on the comparative assessment of recursive time series modeling algorithms that cal represent time machining process and detect the abnormal machining behaviors in precision endmilling operation. In this study, simulation and experimental works were performed to show the malfunctional behaviors. For this purpose, new recursive algorithm(RLSM) was adopted for the oil-line system identification and monitoring of a machining process, we can apply these new algorithms in real process for detection of abnormal chatter. Also, The stability lobe of chatter was analysed by varying parameter of cutting dynamics in regenerative chatter mechanics.
With recent advanced in portable electric devices, wireless sensor, MEMS and bio-Mechanics device, the new typed power supply, not conventional battery but self-powered energy source is needed. Particularly, the system that harvests from their environments are interests for use in self powered devices. For very low powered devices, environmental energy may be enough to use power source. In the generality of cases, these energy harvesting systems are used in the piezoelectric materials as mechanisms to convert mechanical vibration energy into electric energy. Through the piezoelectric materials, the ambient vibration energy could be used to prolong the power supply or in the ideal case provide endless energy f9r the devices. Therefore, the piezoelectric power harvesting cantilever beam is developed. Also, the output voltage and power are predicted in this study. We also discuss the developing system of the piezoelectric energy scavenger. An experimental verification of the model is also performed to ensure its accuracy.

Airbag deployment has been responsible for huge death, incidental injuries and broken bones due to low crash severity and wrong deployment decision. This misfortune has led the authorities and the industries to pursue uniquely designed airbags incorporating crash-sensing technologies. This paper provides a thorough discussion underlying crash sensing algorithm approaches for the subject matter. Unfortunately, most algorithms used for crash sensing still have some problems. They either deploy at low severity or fail to trigger the airbag on time. In this work, the crash-sensing algorithm is studied by analyzing the data obtained from the variables such as (i) change of velocity, (ii) speed of the vehicle and (iii) acceleration. The change of velocity is used to detect crash while speed of the vehicle provides relevant information for deployment decision. This paper also demonstrates crash severity with respect to the changing speed of the vehicle. Crash sensing simulations were carried out using Simulink, Stateflow, SimMechanics and Virtual Reality toolboxes. These toolboxes are also used to validate the results obtained from the simulated experiments of crash sensing, airbag deployment decision and its crash severity detection of the proposed system.
Recently small punch creep testing (or miniature disc bend creep test) has received much attention through European collaborative research projects. This method was considered as a substitute for the conventional creep rupture testing by which the residual creep life is measured from the specimen taken out from serviced components of high temperature plants. It would be beneficial if the material creep properties such as power law creep constants as well as the creep rupture life can be measured from the small punch creep test. In this paper a method of assessing creep constants from the small punch creep testing is proposed. Finite element analyses were performed to investigate evolution of stress and strain rate at the weakest locations of the small punch creep specimen. Elastic-plastic-secondary creep analyses were carried out. The estimation equations for creep constants by the small punch creep testing are proposed based on the finite analysis results. Small punch creep tests were also performed with 9Cr steel and the accuracy of the proposed equation was verified by the experimental results.
This is to characterize the fluid mechanics of surfactant water solutions, which exhibit drag reduction in the turbulent flow as compared to pure water. The emphasis is placed on those fluid characteristic aspects of drag reducing solutions which are relevant for application in closed circulation loops for the purpose of pumping power savings, like hydronic cooling and heating systems in buildings. The experiments are carried out with the solutions of the surfactant Beraid DR-IW 616 in concentration of $100{\sim}3,000ppm$. The following key parameters are focused in this study: surfactant concentration, solution temperature and pipe diameter.
