PES UF membranes containing silver were prepared to impart antibacterial properties for waste water treatment. Asymmetric membranes for antibacterial application were prepared from polyethersulfone (PES) and silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) (PES/$AgNO_3$=15/2 by weight) solution in N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) via simple wet phase inversion technique. These membranes were characterized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weights (1000 ppm in water) at room temperature and on operating pressure of 5 bars. It was observed that the water flux of PES-$AgNO_3$ membrane is slightly lower than virgin PES but still increased linearly with the increment of pressure applied. The morphology of the resulting membranes was examined using Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Elemental analysis using EDS proved that silver is successfully loaded on the membrane surfaces. Due to the success of loading silver on membrane surfaces, antibacterial activities were evaluated via agar diffusion method against Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) culture. By incorporating 2 wt% of silver nitrate, PES-$AgNO_3$ showed significant inhibition ring on both E.coli and S.aureus. Filtration of E.coli solution (OD 0.31) showed satisfactory rejection data with ~100% inhibition growth after 24 hours incubation at $37^{\circ}C$. Resultant membranes also exhibit better tensile strength (compared to virgin PES) up to 71% may be due to the suggested interactions. The residual silver during fabrication was measured using ICP-MS and result showed that the residual silver content of PES-$AgNO_3$ membrane was only ~1% of the original silver added in the polymer solution. These studies have shown that PES-$AgNO_3$ UF membranes are potential in improving the filtration in water treatment.
The preparation of Ag nano-powder from aqueous silver nitrate solution, which would be available for the recycling of silver bearing wastes, was investigated by a reductive precipitation reaction using hydrazine hydrate as a reducing agent. Silver solution was prepared by dissolving silver nitrate with distilled water, and then the dispersant, Tamol NN8906 or Tween 20, was also mixed to avoid the agglomeration of particles during the reductive reaction followed by the addition of hydrazine hydrate to prepare Ag nano-particles. Ag particles obtained from the reduction reaction from silver solution were characterized using the particle size analyzer and TEM to determine the particle size distribution and morphology. It was found that about 100% excess of hydrazine hydrate was required to reduce completely silver ions in the solution. Ag powders with very narrow distribution could be obtained when Tamol NN8906 was used as the dispersant. In case of Tween 20, the particle size distribution showed typically the bimodal or multimodal distribution and the morphology of Ag particles was found to be irregular shape in both cases.
The extraction of precious metals from aqueous solutions is performed by using a photoredox reaction with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The metallic silver was efficiently precipitated and extracted from the silver nitrate solution by laser photolysis. An optimum reaction condition for silver extraction was determined by adjusting various experimental factors such as type of reducing agent, type of acids and reaction time. The composition of the reaction product was analyzed and it was identified as metallic silver, not other molecular types. The photoreaction of chromium(III) chloride in an acidic aqueous solution was also investigated. The 355 nm laser light was better suited for the reaction of silver nitrate as well as chromium(III) chloride in an acidic solution compared to the 532 nm light.

Highly ordered silver nanowire with a diameter of 10 nm was arrayed by electroless deposition in a porous anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) membrane. The AAO membrane was fabricated electrochemically in an oxalic acid solution via a two-step anodization process, while growth of the silver nanowire was initiated by using electroless deposition at the long-range-ordered nanochannels of the AAO membrane followed by thermal reduction of a silver nitrate aqueous solution by increasing the temperature up to $350^{\circ}C$ for an hour. An additional electro-chemical procedure was applied after the two-step anodization to control the pore size and channel density of AAO, which enabled us to fabricate highly-ordered silver nanowire on a large scale. Electroless deposition of silver nitrate aqueous solution into the AAO membrane and thermal reduction of silver nanowires was performed by increasing the temperature up to $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The morphologies of silver nanowires arrayed in the AAO membrane were investigated using SEM. The chemical composition and crystalline structure were confirmed by XRD and EDX. The electroless-deposited silver nanowires in AAO revealed a well-crystallized self-ordered array with a width of 10 nm.

A cellulose acetate membrane containing silver nitrate was prepared by gelatinizing in water at $2^{\circ}C$ after evaporating solvent from the casting solution on a glass plate. Permeation experiments for oxygen and nitrogen were conducted in the ranges of temperature, $5-40^{\circ}C$ and pressure difference, $1-5kg/cm^2$ in order to investigate the effects of temperature and pressure difference on permeation characteristics of the membrane. When the evaporation time was increased, the permeability of oxygen decreased but the separation factor of oxygen against nitrogen increased since a more dense layer was formed on the membrane surface. When the silver nitrate was added, the permeation flux was doubled and the separation factor was improved from 3.0 to 3.3. This implies that silver nitrate acts as an oxygen carrier in the membrane.

Silver-Nickel alloy has been used as a electrical contact material for low voltage, low current. Since the solubility between Ag and Ni is very low, it is difficult to produce Ag-Ni alloy by using conventional melting method and disperse Ni powder homogeneously in Ag matrix. In this study we have been produced fine Ag-Ni alloy powder by using coprecipitation method. Firstly, we have produced silver-nickel nitrate solution by dissolving the Ag and Ni ingot in nitric acid solution and then, coprecipitate (Ag, Ni)carbonate dropping Ag-Ni nitrate solution to sodium carbonate solution. (Ag, Ni) carbonate is heat-treated in $H_2$ atmosphere, $400^{\circ}C$ and it has been analysed by TGA, SEM, XRD, ICP. It is represented Silver-Nickel alloy powder in the particle range of $0.1{\sim}0.5{\mu}m$.
Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical reduction method from aqueous silver nitrate solution ana hydrazine as a reduction agent. The morphology, particle size and shape were dependent on the mixing method, reaction temperature and time, molar ratio of hydrazine and silver nitrate, the kind of surfactant, and the addition of surfactant. The stability of the colloidal silver was achieved by the adsorption of surfactant molecules onto the particle. Silver nanoparticles have a characteristic absorption maximum at 430 nm under UV irradiation. It was found that the colloid was nanometer m size and formed very stable dispersion of silver. The Ag nanoparticles obtained showed the spherical shape with the size range of 10-30 nm.

Porous ceramic beads that had skeleton structure were impregnated with Ag from silver nitrate solution. Ag-impregnated porous ceramic beads were performed to evaluate the antibacterial properties on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, also, compared with commercial silver-activated carbon on antibacterial activity. As concentration of silver nitrate solution increased, deposited-Ag contents of outer and inner surface of beads were increased. The size of silver particles supported on porous ceramic bead were range of $0.5{\sim}2.0\;{\mu}m$. The observed effects of the prepared Ag-impregnated beads on antibacterial activity are as follows : i) Antibacterial activity should be directly proportional to silver nitrate solution and reaction time. ii) The antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli was better than that against Staphylococcus aureus.
This study was carried out to determine the effect of dose and timing of gamma irradiation and post-irradiation treatment with some preservatives of cut flowers on their longevity of rose and chrysanthemum. Cut roses which were soaked in 2% sugar solution persist to 0.75 kGy irradiation treatments. In post-treatments with some preservative solutions, the mixture group of 2% sucrose,2000m silver nitrate and 3.0% crysal were available in flower quality, but the 200 ppm silver nitrate solution treatment showed serious blackening of floral stems and resulted On negative effect in flower quality. Effect of gamma irradiation and all preservative solutions on the cut mum longevity were showed almost same tendency with rose cut flower longevity experiments. The 2% sugar dipping solution in mum cut flower showed the most superior preservative effect compared with the my other preservative solutions tested. Also non-irradiated treatment extended to flower up to complete wilt.
The photocontrolled reduction of silver nitrate to silver (Ag) nanoparticles on honeycomb-patterned poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)-cellulose triacetate (CTA) composite thin films was studied. The composites were prepared via the oxidative polymerization of N-vinylcarbazole with ferric chloride using different CTA concentrations. A honeycomb-patterned film was fabricated by casting the composite solution under humid conditions. Ag particles with a homogeneous distribution were produced by the composite film in a moderate CTA concentration, whereas aggregated Ag was obtained from the pure PVK film.
