Silver has potent antibacterial activity against a variety of bacteria while maintaining low toxicity in mammalian cells. This study was conducted to investigate the possible mechanism underlying the bactericidal effects of silver ions against bovine mastitis pathogens using electron microscopy. We used two different bacterial strains, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, which are primarily responsible for the majority of bovine mastitis cases. Interaction between the bacteria and silver ions (50 ${\mu}g/mL$, 2 hours) were studied using energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM). EFTEM images showed that E. coli and S. aureus cells treated with the silver ions had distorted plasma membranes, silver ions attached to the outer membranes, scattered electron-light material, and leakage of cell contents from disrupted cell membranes.
The complexation of co-contaminant mixtures between Ag(I) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules (naphthalene, pyrene, and perylene) were investigated to quantify the equilibrium constants of their complexes and elucidate the interactions between Ag(I) and PAH molecules. The apparent solubilities of PAHs in aqueous solutions increased with increasing Ag(I) ion concentration. The values, K$_1$ and K$_2$ of equilibrium constants of complexes of Ag(I)-PAHs, were 2.990 and 0.378, 3.615 and 1.261, and 4.034 and 1.255, for naphthalene, pyrene, and perylene, respectively, The K$_1$and K$_2$ values of PAHs for Ag(I) increased in the order of naphthalene < pyrene < perylene and naphthalene < pyrene ≒ perylene, respectively, indicating that a larger size of PAH molecule is likely to have more a richer concentration of electrons on the plane surfaces which can lead to stronger complexes with the Ag(I) ion. For the species of Ag(I)-PAH complexes, a 1:1 Ag(I) : the aromatic complex, AgAr$\^$+/, was found to be a predominant species over a 2:1 Ag(I) : aromatic complex, Ag$_2$Ar$\^$++/. The PAH molecules with four or more aromatic rings and/or bay regions were observed to have slightly less affinity with the Ag(I) ion than expected, which might result from inhibiting forces such as the spread of aromatic $\pi$ electrons over o wide molecular surface area and the intermolecular electronic repulsion in bay regions.
A series of polyethers containing the thiazole or oxazole subcyclic moiety have been synthesized. Reaction of 2-aryl-4-hydroxymethylthiazole with tetra- and pentaethylene glycol di-p-tosylate in THF provided corresponding α,ω-bis[2'-aryl-4'-methylthiazole]polyethylene glycol in good yields. Similar treatment of 2-phenyl-4-hydroxymethyloxazole 7 and 2-phenyl-5-hydroxymethyloxazole 8 with tetraethylene glycol di-p-tosylate yielded the corresponding 1,13-bis [2'-phenyl-4'-methyloxazole]tetraethylene glycol 16 and 1,13-bis[2'-phenyl-5'-methyloxazole]tetraethylene glycol 17 in 69 and 43% yields in respectively. The potentiometric properties of PVC-based ion selective membranes containing 66 wt% o-nitrophenyloctyl ether (NPOE) and 4 wt% polyethers 9-17 have been examined. The membranes containing thiazole and oxazole polyether derivatives exhibited high selectivity toward silver (I) ion. It was observed that the response slopes of the electrodes to silver ion vary with the length of polyether chain linking two thiazole subcyclic moiety. Potentiometric data suggest that the number of ether units, CH2OCH2, for phenylthiazole derivatives be greater than 5 to result in near-Nernstian response. However, the response behaviors of the membrane electrodes based on phenyloxazole podands 16 and 17, which have different orientation, were correspondingly similar to those of the electrodes based on phenylthiazole podands 9 and 10. On the other hand, the ISEs based on thiazole polyether derivatives with different terminal substituents, e.g., phenyl 10, naphtyl 14, and thienyl 15, except that with pyridyl 12, exhibited little difference in their potentiometric properties.
Chemically modified electrodes(CMEs), based on 2-imino-1-cyclopentane-dithiocarboxylic acid (icdc) containing carbon paste, have been characterized using cyclic voltammetric techniques. Ag(I) was chemically deposited on the CMEs, and voltammograms were obtained with the electrode in a separate buffer solution. The CME surface can be regenerated with exposure to acid and reused for deposition. In 10 deposition/measurement/regenerate cycles, the linear response have been reproduced up to $1{\times}10^{-6}$ M in linear sweep voltammetry and 1${\times}$10-8 M in differential pulse voltammetry with relative standard deviation of 5.2% and 12.4%, respectiveiy. The sensitivity increased with deposition time and scanning rate, and detection limit was $1{\times}10^{-7}M\;and\;1{\times}10^{-9}M$ at 20 minutes deposition in the linear sweep voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, respectively. The presence of some metal ions does not influence the silver ion response. Satisfactory results were obtained for the analysis of the silver ion for a variety of reference materials without interference of Hg ion at the condition of pH = 5-6.

The synthesis of highly concentrated silver nano sol assisted by polymeric dispersant (polyelectrolytes) for inkjet method was studied. The silver nano sol was prepared with AgNO$_3$, polyelectrolytes (HS5468cf ; polyacrylic ammonium salt), and reducing agent. The polyelectrolytes play an important role in formation of complex composed of Ag$\^$+/ion and carboxyl group (COO$\^$-/), result in preparation of highly dispersed silver nano particles. The optimization of added amount of polyelectrolytes, and concentration of silver nano sol was studied. The silver nanoparticles were evaluated by XRD, particle size/zeta potential analyzer and FE-TEM. The silver nanoparticles with the range of 10 nm in diameter were produced. The concentration of batch-synthesized silver nano sol was possible up to 40 wt%.

Nitrogen ion with various levels of dose and irradiation energy was irradiated on aluminum surfaces. Contact angle of surface was increased and surface color was changed by nitrogen ion implantation. During steam condensation experiment using nitrogen ion implanted specimen, dropwise condensation initially occurred on specimens. However, condensation mode eventually changed into filmwise condensation. The color of the surface was also changed from yellow-brown to silver-white. This change of surface color and condensation mode were results of hydrolysis reaction between condensate and nitrogen ion implanted on aluminum surfaces.
We report a highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform for the selective trace analysis of mercury (II) ions in drinkable water using aptamer-conjugated silver nanoparticles. Here, an aptamer designed to specifically bind to $Hg^{2+}$ ions in aqueous solution was labelled with a TAMRA moiety at the 5' end and used as a Raman reporter. Polyamine spermine tetrahydrochloride (spermine) was used to promote surface adsorption of the aptamer probes onto the silver nanoparticles. When $Hg^{2+}$ ions are added to the system, binding of $Hg^{2+}$ with T-T pairs results in a conformational rearrangement of the aptamer to form a hairpin structure. As a result of the reduced of electrostatic repulsion between silver nanoparticles, aggregation of silver nanoparticles occurs, and the SERS signal is significantly increased upon the addition of $Hg^{2+}$ ions. Under optimized assay conditions, the concentration limit of detection was estimated to be 5 nM, and this satisfies a limit of detection below the EPA defined limit of 10 nM in drinkable water.

Nano adhesion and friction between a $Si_{3}N_{4}$ AFM(atomic force microscope) tip and thin silver films were experimentally studied. Tests were performed to measure the nano adhesion and friction in both AFM and LFM(lateral force microscope) modes in various range of normal loads. Thin silver films deposited by IBAD (ion beam assisted deposition) on Si-wafer (100) and other Si-wafers of different surface roughness were used. Results showed that nano adhesion and friction decreased with the surface roughness. When the Si surfaces were coated by pure silver, the adhesion and friction decreased. But the adhesion and friction were not affected by the thickness of IBAD silver coating. As the normal force increased, the adhesion forces of bare Si-wafer and IBAD silver coating film remained constant, but the friction forces increased linearly. Test results suggested that the friction was mainly governed by the adhesion as long as the load was low.
Hydroxyapatite (HAP) was prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis method and also silver was introduced on the surface of HAP through an ion exchange reaction. The crystal phase and morphology of HAP were then evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the absorption property of HAP was characterized by diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy. The presence of silver nanoparticles on the surface of HAP was also verified by XRD and TEM analysis. Particularly, the silver doped HAP showed an enhanced absorption property in UV-Vis region compared to that of the pristine HAP.

The silver sulphide (Ag2S) thin films have been chemically deposited from an alkaline medium (pH 8 to 10) by using a silver nitrate and thiourea as a Ag and S ion precursor sources. Ethylene Damine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used as a complexing agent. The effect of annealing atmosphere such as Ar, N2+H2S and O2 on the structural, morphological and optical properties of Ag2S thin films has been studied. The annealed films were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical absorption techniques for the structural, morphological, and optical properties, respectively. XRD studies reveal that the as-deposited thin films are polycrystalline with monoclinic crystal structure, is converted in to silver oxide after air annealing. The surface morphology study shows that grains are uniformly distributed over the entire surface of the substrate. Optical absorption study shows the as-deposited Ag2S thin films with band gap energy of 0.92eV and after air annealing it is found to be 2.25 eV corresponding to silver oxide thin films.
