Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) exhibits potent anti-carcinogenic and other biological activities in several animal models. We report here that dietary CLA, chemically synthesized from corn oil, accumulates I silkworm, Bombyx mori, which is used as therapeutic agent for diabetes in Korea and Japan. Mulberry leaves treated with 0.1 or 10% CLA in ethanol were supplied to silkworms from the end of 3rd instar to the 3rd day of the 5th instar. Fresh mulberry leaves or leaves treated with 10% corn oil in ethanol were fed as a check treatment. the amount of total lipids in the larval body ranged from 17.4 to 19.1mg/g of body tissue, which was not significantly affected by the source of the diets. No CLA was found in the control silkworms. But the level of CLA significantly increased to 83.5 mg/g of fat, when fed with mulberry leaves treated with 10% CLA. Only trace amounts of CLA were detected in the larvae reared with check leaves and 0.1% CLA-treated leaves. Mulberry leaves treatd with corn oil or CLA were not palatable to the larvae, resulting in a reduction of larval weight. These results suggest that silkworms containing CLA in body lipids could be producted by dietary CLA.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most frequent form of variation in the genome of any organism. Owing to their greater abundance, they are considered useful for identifying cultivars, construction of higher density linkage maps, and detection of genes (QTLs) associated with complex agronomic traits and diseases. Although, SNPs have been used recently for constructing a high density genetic map in silkworm and a set of 118 SNPs have been identified in tasar silkworms, not much progress has been made in sericulture to utilize the vast potential of SNPs. Thus, this review mainly focuses on some of the important methods of SNP discovery, validation and genotyping. Emphasis has also been given to the possible uses of SNP genotyping in the improvement of silkworms and their host plants.

One of the biggest problems encountered during the last phase of silkworm rearing is non-uniform maturation of the silkworms especially during cooler months. Phytoecdysteroid (20-hydroxy ecdysone) was extracted in large-scale from a plant belongs to Caryophyllaceae and fed to silkworm larvae to test the effect of phytoecdysteroid. About 80% of the silkworms were ready for mounting by 18 hrs after treatment (when the treatment is done for uniform spinning), whereas in control batch only 37% worms were ready for mounting by the same time.
The ratio of form and character in the text generation of silkworms which were double copulated between home race copulation and hetero race copulation in crossing with two males of different races for female(double crossing) are different according to the copulating time, copulating order and sperm activities. But the general tendencies are as follows; 1. During two hour's double copulation, sufficiently ejaculating time, the fertilization percentage of hetero lace copulation are higher than that of homo race, but in case of double copulation with plain and normal marked silkworms showed opposite results. The fertilization percentage of homo race copulation are equal or higher compare with that of hetero race copulation. 2. The form and character of the next generation were largely effected by copulating order, so the primary copulating moths are more effected in the next generation than the secondary moths. 3. The active sperms were more fertilized than non-active sperms in the double copulation.

BmNPV (Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus) causes nuclear polyhedrosis in silkworms. The tolerance of silkworms to BmNPV is controlled by polygenes. This paper reports on the relative tolerance of silkworm breeds among the germplasm maintained at Andhra Pradesh State Sericultural Research & Development Institute (APSSRDI), Hindupur, India. The silkworm larvae out of second moult were per orally inoculated with BmNPV polyhedra $(l{\times}l0^{th}//ml)$ and reared upto spinning. The response to BmNPV had been categorized into apparent tolerance, real tolerance and susceptibility. Among the 145 silkworm breeds screened, 18 bivoltines and 16 polyvoltines were found to have real tolerance to BmNPV.
This study was carried out to investigate incubating characteristics, LTSEM observation, nature of a disease of infected silkworms(bombyx mori), LD$\_$50/, optimum infective condition for mass production and infection percentage(%) on conservation periods. On the V8 media, the colony was 0.5∼2.0cm/8 days in diameter and white or slighty colored with a white fluffy to powdery appearance. The conidia was subglobos in shape, zig-zag appearance, 1-celled, hyaline and 3.2$\times$2.4 ㎛ in size on the average. The conidiophore was irregular grouped, hyaline, rounded or flask-shaped. The LD$\_$50/ values of the 2nd and 4th silkworms were each other 6.6142(Log) in natural temperature and humidity (25$\^{C}$, 65%). On optimum infective condition for mass production, all of preservation time(hr.) postinoculation in 1.0$\times$10$\^$8/ conidia/㎖ was over 97% and only 20 hr in 1.0$\times$10$\^$7/ condia/㎖ was over 90%.

We successfully extirpated all four hemopoietic organ-wing disc complexes of the fifth instar larvae of Bombyx mori, and found that most of the treated silkworms could still develop into the moths. We investigated the changes of the circulating hemocytes and evaluated the effects of extirpation on the hemopoiesis. The results showed that proliferation of circulating hemocytes was sufficient to allow development of the silkworms which complexes were totally extirpated. We also found that hemopoietic organ-wing disc complexes extirpation might cause a certain hemopoietic compensation of the remainder complexes during early spinning. Exogenous hormones such as $20-{\beta}-hydroxyecdysone$ and juvenile hormone analog had a positive effect on hemocytes proliferation.

Bombyx mandarina is widely accepted as ancestor of B. mori. Silkworms are served as well-characterized models for understanding the mechanism for the genetic regulation of development. In this study, we performed RNA-Seq analysis to examine tissue-expression of gloverin isoforms of the silk-gland, mid-gut, and fat body in B. mandarina. BLAST analysis revealed that four gloverin isoform gene sequences of B. mandarina were highly similar to B. mori. To identify the difference between two species, the expression profile of gloverin was measured by semi- RT-PCR analysis. The specific expression of gloverin isoform genes was observed mainly in the fat body from B. mori but not B. mandarina. However, all of tissues in the wild-type silkworm could induce the upregulation of compared with the B. mori. To validate the sudden increase in gloverin gene expression in the mid-gut tissue of B. mandarina, we were using qRT-PCR. Relative mRNA expression rate of gloverin at the wild-type silkworm was much higher than domestic silkworm. Comparative genomics between domesticated and wild silkworms showed different tissue-expression levels in some of immune related genes. These results are suggesting a trend toward decreasing immunity related genes expression during domestication. Further studies are needed to elucidate the silkworm domestication and an invaluable resource for wild silkworm genomics research.
