Computer code was developed to design waveguide gratings based on coupled-mode equations and the transfer matrix formalism. The experimental set-up has been constructed for inscribing Bragg gratings in planar waveguides with a phase mask and uv laser beam, which enables alignment and packaging of grating devices as well as in-situ performance measurements. Bragg grating has been fabricated on silica planar waveguides with 0.75% Germanium concentration and its transmittance spectrum was measured to have 95% reflectance at the peak wavelength. Optical losses as the function of the misalignment were measured and their usage is described.

The numerical alaysis of optical device, silicabased device, are presented. The purpose of this paper is to simulate and to design a 8-channel optical wavelength division multiplexer(OWDM) based on Mach-Zehnder Interferometer(MZI) with wavelength spacing between channels Δλ=0.8 nm at central wavelength λ=1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In initial condition fur simulating, we assumed as follows. A channel waveguide is made from silica based P-doped SiO2 core layers in order to coupling with a fiber easily and its core dimension was 6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$\times$6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The core and clad index of channel waveguide were 1.455 and 1.444, separately, at λ=1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Where, the separation between channel waveguides in coupling region was 3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. As a result of analysis, a group mode index of channel waveguide was 1.4498370, was gained by Hermite-Gaussian Method(HGM). Also, the channel spacing was determined by the waveguide arm length difference and was Δλ=0.8 nm as like a proposed condition. The central wavelength of a designed-multiplexer was activated about wavelength λ=1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and we certificated that it can be used to 8-channel optical wavelength division multiplexer/demultiplexer.
As the radius of curvature of curved optical waveguide gets smaller, the loss increases at the junction of linear-curved waveguide by the cross sectional mode mismatch. The concept of lateral offset has been used widely to minimize it, and simple method of maximum matching has been efficient for most cases of silica waveguide with low optical confinement and large radius of curvature. Here, we analyzed that the propagation mode characteristics of the lateral offset and propagation mode characteristics of general case with effective index method and Airy function solution. As the normalized frequency varies, mode characteristics changes near the boundary of 1/V=0.7 and the simple matching of gaussian profile might give -35% of error at most. We proposed improved method with a new correction factor to improve the mode mismatch problem of conventional methods for general cases, and showed the convenience and feasibility of this method for the calculation of the lateral offset.
A computer routine for personal computer(PC/AT class) is developed to analysize the mode characteristics of silica based optical waveguides whose cross sections are of semi circular and other typical shapes. The basic algorithm used in the routine is to convert the wave equation into a matrix equation by expanding the wave function in terms of simple harmonic functions. The matrix elements are a set of overlap integrals of sinusoidal funtions with appropriate weight given by the distribution of refractive index over the waveguide cross section. The eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the matrix is then computed via diagonalization. We explain some practical problems that arises when implementing the algorithm into the routine. By using this routine we analyze the mode characteristics of silica based optical waveguides of semi circular and some other typical cross sections.

In this paper, we have designed a mode size converter to reduce coupling loss between super-high delta silica optical waveguides and single mode fibers. The new mode size converter has three design aspects; periodically segmented taper waveguide for minimal size, lateral taper waveguide for simple fabrication, and surrounding trenches to improve coupling loss. In the optimal mode size converter design, coupling loss is 0.33dB/point without trenches and 0.2dB/point with trenches.
As the waveguide width and the radius of curvature get smaller for the effort of monolithic fabrication of integrated photonic devices, the waveguide characteristics change significantly according to the change of the waveguide width or the radius of curvature. Especially, variation of the waveguide width due to fabrication process errors induces a phase error for each waveguide from the change of the propagation constant. Therefore, it is important to quantify these variation effects on the device characteristics for the design and fabrication of highly integrated photonic devices. Here, we analyze four different types of waveguides to get general characteristics in propagation constant change by utilizing the effective index method and the analytic solution method. Futhermore, the output characteristics of two AWG(Arrayed Waveguide Grating) devices are simulated by a highly-functional computer code. The simulated results have been found to be similar to the realistic device characteristics. The required fabrication error limit for the ridge-type InP-AWG device should be smaller than 0.02 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to get better channel crosstalk than-25 dB, while the required fabrication error limit for rib-type silica-AWG devices may be allowed up to 0.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to obtain better crosstalk than -30 dB.
We present a cost-effective dual polarization quadrature phase-shift coherent receiver module using a silica planar lightwave circuit (PLC) hybrid assembly. Two polarization beam splitters and two $90^{\circ}$ optical hybrids are monolithically integrated in one silica PLC chip with an index contrast of $2%-{\Delta}$. Two four-channel spot-size converter integrated waveguide-photodetector (PD) arrays are bonded on PD carriers for transverse-electric/transverse-magnetic polarization, and butt-coupled to a polished facet of the PLC using a simple chip-to-chip bonding method. Instead of a ceramic sub-mount, a low-cost printed circuit board is applied in the module. A stepped CuW block is used to dissipate the heat generated from trans-impedance amplifiers and to vertically align RF transmission lines. The fabricated coherent receiver shows a 3-dB bandwidth of 26 GHz and a common mode rejection ratio of 16 dB at 22 GHz for a local oscillator optical input. A bit error rate of $8.3{\times}10^{-11}$ is achieved at a 112-Gbps back-to-back transmission with off-line digital signal processing.
Data transmission capacity that is required in 2010 is forecasted that increase by optical communication capacity more than present centuple, and is doing increased demand of optical communication related industry product present. Specially, Lid glass' application that is one of optical communication parts is used in optical communication parts manufacture of Fiber array, Ferrule array, Fanout Black, Silica optical waveguide chip and splitter etc. Also, it is used widely for communication network system, CATV, ATM-PON, FTTH and system. But, Lid glass need much processing times and becomes cause in rising prices of optical communication parts because production cost is expensive. The objectives, of this work is to suggest the micro concave and convex pattern manufacturing technology on borosilicate plate using high temperature and compression molding method. As a result, could developed micro pattern Mold more than 5 pattern, and reduce Lid Glass manufacture cycle time.
Much research into two-dimensional (2-D) photonic crystal (PC) structures has been conducted for realization of ultrasmall optical integrated circuits. A 2-D silicon (Si) PC slab structure with air cladding (n=1) is one of the representative structures in 2-D PCs. While air-clad Si PC slab structures have good optical characteristics, their suspension in air can lead to mechanical weakness, making integration with some optical devices difficult. In this paper, we propose improving the mechanical robustness of PC structure by developing a 2-D Si PC structure with symmetric silica cladding (n=1.44) and comparing its optical properties to that of the air-clad structure. First, we investigate the optical properties of a 2-D Si PC slab structure with air cladding by using a 3-D finite difference time domain method. We determined that a photonic bandgap of 330 nm and a non-leaky propagating bandwidth of 100 nm in the optical communication range are possible. Next, we investigate the optical properties of 2-D Si PC slab structures with silica cladding. Even though the refractive index of the silica cladding is higher than that of air, we developed a silica-clad structure with good optical properties: a photonic band gap of approximately 230 nm and a non-leaky propagating bandwidth of 90 nm, comparable to that of the air-clad PC structures.
Femtosecond laser machining has been applied for creating a sensor function in silica glass optical fibers. Femtosecond laser pulses make it possible to fabricate micro structures in processed regions of a very thin glass fiber line because femtosecond laser pulses can extremely minimize thermal effects. With the laser machining to optical fiber using a single shot of 210-fs laser at a wavelength of 800 nm, it was observed that a processed region surrounded a thin layer which seemed to be a hollow cavity monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study aims at a theoretical investigation for the processed region by using a numerical analysis in order to embed sensing function to optical fibers. Numerical methods based finite element method (FEM) has been used for an optical waveguide modeling. This report suggests two types modeling and describes a comparative study on optical losses obtained by the experiment and the numerical analysis.
