  • The objectives of this paper are to investigate the performance of silica gel-water adsorption refrigeration system with heat recovery process from the system experiment. This system can be driven by waste heat at near ambient temperature from $60^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$. The cooling capacity and coefficient of performance(COP) were measured from various experimental conditions. An experimental results revealed the influence of operating temperatures(hot, cooling and chilled water), water flow rates, and adsorption-desorption cycle times on cooling capacity and COP. Under the standard conditions of $80^{\circ}C$ hot water, $25^{\circ}C$ cooling water, $14^{\circ}C$ chilled water inlet temperatures and 420sec cycle time, a cooling capacity of 1.14kW and a COP for cooling of 0.55 can be achieved.

  • This paper presents an experimental measurement of effective thermal conductivity in an adsorbent packed bed with silica gel A type. The effective thermal conductivity was measured under different conditions of the adsorbent bed temperature, pressure, particle size and water content by using the transient hot wire method. The measured effective thermal conductivity showed to become bigger with decreasing particle size or increasing water content, but it was a little affected with increasing bed temperature and pressure. The bed temperature was varied in the range of 1$0^{\circ}C$ (equation omitted) T (equation omitted) 5$0^{\circ}C$ and the pressure in the range of 10 kPa (equation omitted) P (equation omitted) 190 kPa. The results show that 0.10~0.18 W/mㆍK of effective thermal conductivity measured for the zero water content.

  • Probe diffusion with latex particles in two different types of chemically cross linked gel has been studied. The diffusion of particles in silica gel is decreased by decreasing the gel correlation length but the particles' diffusion in the acrylamide gel still shows the heterogeneity of the gel. By increasing the contents of the gel network the silica gel makes a more homogeneous and compact structure than that of acrylamide gel which has partial heterodyning. Dynamic light scattering study with the probe particles in two different gels reveals the heterogeneity of the gel network. The latex particles trapping in the gel has been investigated by using non-ergodic concepts.

  • The porous silica membrane was prepared from Si(${OC}_2H_5)_4-H_2O$ system by sol-gel method. To investigate the characteristics of gels and porous silica membrane, we examined gels and porous silica membrane using TG-DTA, X-ray diffractometer, IR spectrophotometer, BET, SEM and TEM. The optimum mole ratio of Si(OC$_2$H$_{5}$)$_4$ : $H_2O$ $C_2$H$_{5}$OH for porous silica membrane was 1 : 4.5 : 4. The porous silica membrane was obtained by heat treatment of the gel above 700 $^{\circ}C$. The specific surface area of sintered gel was 3.8 $m^2$/g to 902.3 $m^2$/g at 100 $^{\circ}C$ to 1100 $^{\circ}C$ The pore size of sintered gel was in the range 20 $\AA$~ 50$\AA$. The particle size of sintered gel was 15 nm to 30 nm at 30$0^{\circ}C$ to 700$^{\circ}C$. The performance of the porous silica membrane was investigated for the separation of $H_2$/$N_2$ gas mixture. Gas separation through porous silica membrane depends upon Knudsen flow and surface flow. The veal separation factor($\alpha$) of $H_2$/$N_2$ was 5.17 at 155.15 cmHg and $25^{\circ}C$. The real separation factor($\alpha$), head separation factor($\beta$), and tail separation factor( $\bar{B}$) increased as the pressure of permeation cell Increased.sed.

  • The PTMSP-silica-PEI composite membranes were synthesized from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and poly (1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP) by sol-gel process. The PTMSP-silica nanocomposite membranes were characterized by $^1H-NMR$, FT-IR, TGA, XPS, SEM, GPC and gas permeation measurements were accomplished with $H_2,\;O_2,\;N_2,\;CO_2,\;CH_4$. The gases permeability increased with increasing TEOS content. Both the permeability and selectivity of $H_2,\;CH_4$ increased to 15 wt% TEOS. While the permeability of $O_2,\;CO_2$ increased without decrease of selectivity.

  • Multinuclear solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments were performed to investigate the local structure changes of nanoporous silica during hydrothermal treatment and surface modification with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APTES). The nanoporous silica was prepared by sol-gel polymerization using inexpensive sodium silicate as a silica precursor. Using $^1H$ magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra, the hydroxyl groups, which play an important role in surface reactions, were probed. Various silicon sites such as $Q^2$, $Q^3$, $Q^4$, $T^2$, and $T^3$ were identified with $^{29}Si$ cross polarization (CP) MAS NMR spectra and quantified with $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR spectra. The results indicated that about 25% of the silica surface was modified. $^1H$ and $^{29}Si$ NMR data proved that the hydrothermal treatment induced dehydration and dehyroxylation. The $^{13}C$ CP MAS and $^1H$ MAS NMR spectra of 3-APTES attached on the surface of nanoporous silica revealed that the amines of the 3-aminopropyl groups were in the chemical state of ${NH_3}^+$ rather than $NH_2$.

  • In order to selectively remove oil and organic compound from water, silica nanoparticles with hydrophobic coating was used. Since silica nanoparticles are generally hydrophilic, removal efficiency of oil and organic compound, such as toluene, in water can be decreased due to competitive adsorption with water. In order to increase the removal efficiency of oil and toluene, hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was coated on silica nanoparticles in the form of thin film. Hydrophobic property of the PDMS-coated silica nanoparticles and hydrophilic silica nanoparticles were easily confirmed by putting it in the water, hydrophilic particle sinks but hydrophobic particle floats. PDMS coated silica nanoparticles were dispersed on a slide glass with epoxy glue on and the water contact angle on the surface was determined to be over $150^{\circ}$, which is called superhydrophobic. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to check the functional group on silica nanoparticle surface before and after PDMS coating. Then, PDMS coated silica nanoparticles were used to selectively remove oil and toluene from water, respectively. It was demonstrated that PDMS coated nanoaprticles selectively aggregates with oil and toluene in the water and floats in the form of gel and this gel remained floating over 7 days. Furthermore, column filled with hydrophobic PDMS coated silica nanoparticles and hydrophilic porous silica was prepared and tested for simultaneous removal of water-soluble and organic pollutant from water. PDMS coated silica nanoparticles have strong resistibility for water and has affinity for oil and organic compound removal. Therefore PDMS-coated silica nanoparticles can be applied in separating oil or organic solvents from water.

  • We prepared hydrophobic silica particles by a sol-gel process from tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), followed by coupling the reaction with octyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS) or hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) under various reaction conditions. We confirmed the extent of silica surface modification with organic compounds by SEM-EDS, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis. The silica particles obtained after the hydrolysis reaction of TEOS in ethanol at $50^{\circ}C$ for 24 h and the coupling reaction with OTMS for 2 h at the same temperature displayed the optimum performance in terms of the dispersity in an organic solvent and the surface roughness of films composited with epoxy resins. The oxygen permeability of the composite film with modified-silica was 12% lower than that of using the film without modified-silica.

  • The influence of powdered and colloidal nano-silica (NS) on the mechanical properties of cement mortar has been investigated. Powdered-NS (~40 nm) was synthesized by employing the sol-gel method and compared with commercially available colloidal NS (~20 nm). SEM and XRD studies revealed that the powdered-NS is non-agglomerated and amorphous, while colloidal-NS is agglomerated in nature. Further, these nanoparticles were incorporated into cement mortar for evaluating compressive strength, gel/space ratio, portlandite quantification, C-S-H quantification and chloride diffusion. Approximately, 27 and 37 % enhancement in compressive strength was observed using colloidal and powdered-NS, respectively, whereas the same was up to 19 % only when silica fume was used. Gel/space ratio was also determined on the basis of degree of hydration of cement mortar and it increases linearly with the compressive strength. Furthermore, DTG results revealed that lime consumption capacity of powdered-NS is significantly higher than colloidal-NS, which results in the formation of additional calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H). Chloride penetration studies revealed that the powdered-NS significantly reduces the ingress of chloride ion as the microstructure is considerably improved by incorporating into cement mortar.

  • Ambient drying sol-gel processing was used for monolithic silica ambigels in the temperature range of $130-250^{\circ}C$. A new method of mesopore ambigels, which mean the aerogels prepared by ambient pressure drying process synthesis, is suggested at first. This method includes two important approaches. The first point is that $SiO_{2}$ surface modification of wet gel was performed by trimethylchlorosilane in n-butanol solution. This procedure is provided the silica gel mesopore structure formation. The second point is a creation of the ternary azeotropic mixture water/n-butanol/octane as porous liquid, which is effectively provided removing of water such a low temperature by 2 step drying condition under ambient pressure. The silica aerogels, which were prepared by ambient pressure drying from azeotropic mixture of water/n-butanol/octane, are transparent, crack-free and mesoporous (pore size ${\sim}$ 5.6 nm) with surface area of ${\sim}$ $923{\;}m^2/g$, bulk density of $0.4{\;}g/cm^3$ and porosity of 85 %.
