  • The physical properties of rubber compounds containing silica and siliane coupling agent in order to replace the carbon black and prepare for environmental regulation showed improved dynamic properties(rebound, heat build-up, $60^{\circ}C\;tan\;{\delta}$), but the abrasion resistance did not improve compared with the compounds containing carbon black. Also, curing retardation because of coherent structure of silica improved by the addition of DEG, but the mixing step change of activators did not so much improve the static and dynamic properties of the compounds containing high synthetic rubber, the status of mixing and dispersion showed that the compounds containing carbon black was much better than the compounds containing silica by TEM investigation.

  • A new method to control the free spectral range of a long period fiber grating is proposed and theoretically analyzed. As the refractive index decreases radially outward in the silica cladding due to graded doping of fluorine, waveguide dispersion in the cladding modes was modified to result in the effective indices change and subsequently the phase matching conditions for coupling with the core mode in a long period fiber grating. Enlargement of the free spectral range in a long period fiber grating was theoretically confirmed.

  • Present silica dispersing agents are based mainly on fatty acid derivatives of Zn, K and mixture of fatty acid and metallic soaps are used to increase activity. The viscosity of silica filled rubber is lowered by Zn-K soap type silica dispersing agent, thus fluidity of hydrocarbon chains and processibility is improved. Silica dispersing agent should not exert an influence on chracteristics of vulcanization. But scorch and curing time is shortened by Zn-K soap type silica dispersing agent. A newly developed silica dispersing agent, which is a nonmetal type agent, reduced the viscosity and hardness of silica compounding rubber, and the highly increased degree of dispersion of silica is caused by interaction of silica and rubber. Also it did not affect the curing characteristics and scorch stability of silica compounding rubber.

  • Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) was used for the surface modification of silica nanoparticles in the toluene dispersion system for 8 h (MPSN). Then, methacryloxypropyl-modified silica nanoparticles were successfully prepared by solutioun polymerization in the ethanol solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 14 h with adding AIBN initiator. The modification of ultra-fine particles (SiOx-PAA nanospheres) was investigated via EA, XPS, FTIR, TGA, SEM and TEM. The mean diameter of the bare silica nanoparticles, MPSN and SiOx-PAA monodisperse nanoparticles was about 25, 30 and 35 nm, respectively.

  • We tried to prepare polystyrene composite particles containing carbon black by suspension polymerization with water as a reaction medium. Hydrophobic silica was selected as a stabilizer and oil-soluble azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), as an initiator. All polymerization reactions were carried out at a fixed temperature of $75^{\circ}C$. Stabilizer concentration was varied from $0.17{\sim}3.33wt%$ compared to water, where particles with $7.96{\mu}m$ in average diameter were obtained at 1.57 wt% of stabilizer. Increase in divinylbenzene concentration, as a crosslinking agent, from $0.1{\sim}1.0 wt%$ compared to monomer exhibited a large increase in average particle diameter Incorporation of 1wt% of carbon black compared to monomer produced an increase in average diameter It is speculated that viscosity lower than that necessary to induce even dispersion of carbon black particles led to poor dispersion, and as a result, large particles. For a styrene mixture containing 3 wt% carton black compared to monomer, enhanced dispersion due to an increase in carbon black concentration reduced average particle diameters. For styrene mixtures containing 1 and 3 wt% carbon black compared to monomer, preparticles before polymerization and polymer composite particles after polymerization showed a similar tendency towards particle formation. When carbon black concentration compared to monomer was increased to 5 and 7 wt%, styrene mixtures exhibited a large increase in viscosity and thus better dispersion of carbon black particles, which led to a decrease in preparticle diameters. However, these particles experienced agglomeration in the polymerization process, and polystyrene composite particles increased in average diameter.

  • Ni catalysts on mesoporous silica and commercial silica were prepared for the methanation. XRD and TPR analyses indicated that Ni/mesoporous silica had smaller metal particle size and higher metal dispersion than that of Ni/commercial silica. In addition, Ni/mesoporous silica had stronger metal-support interaction. In methanation, Ni/mesoporous silica showed higher CO conversion and methane yield (65%) than Ni/commercial silica (58%). In the characterization results of catalysts after reaction, Ni/commercial silica was deactivated by the collapse of structure and metal sintering, but Ni/mesoporous silica showed stable catalytic performance.

  • In this study, based on hydrolysis and condensation via $St{\ddot{o}}ber$ process of sol-gel method, synthesis of mono-dispersed silica nanoparticles was carried out with hydrophilic solvent. This operation was expected to be a more simplified process than that with organic solvent. Based on the sol-gel method, which involves simply controlling the particle size, the particle size of the synthesized silica specimens were ranged from 30 to 300 nm by controlling the composition of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), DI water and ammonia solution, and by varying the stirring speeds while maintaining a fixed amount of ethanol. Increasing the content of DI water and decreasing the content of ammonia caused the particle size to decrease, while controlling the stirring speed at a high level of RPMs enabled a decrease of the particle size. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were utilized to investigate the success factors for synthesizing process; Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to study the effects of the size and morphology of the synthesized particles. To analyze the dispersion properties, zeta potential and particle size distribution (PSD) analyses were utilized.

  • A chemical process involves polymerization within microspheres, whereas a physical process involves the dispersion of polymer in a nonsolvent. Nano-sized monodisperse microspheres are usually prepared by chemical processes such as water-based emulsions, seed suspension polymerization, nonaqueous dispersion polymerization, and precipitation polymerizations. Polymerization was performed in a four-necked, separate-type flask equipped with a stirrer, a condenser, a nitrogen inlet, and a rubber stopper for adding the initiator with a syringe. Nitrogen was bubbled through the mixture of reagents for 1 hr. before elevating the temperature. Functional silane (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) was used for the modification of silica nanoparticles and the self-assembled monolayers obtained were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), laser scattering system (LSS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis (EA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, polymer microspheres were polymerized by radical polymerization of ${\gamma}$-mercaptopropyl modified silica nanoparticles (MPSN) and acrylamide monomer via precipitation polymerization; then, their characteristics were investigated. From the elemental analysis results, it can be concluded that the conversion rate of acrylamide monomer was 93% and that polyacrylamide grafted to MPSN nanospheres via the radical precipitation polymerization with AAm in ethanol solvent. The microspheres were successfully polymerized by the 'graft from' method.

  • Low molecular weight polybutadiene (liquid BR) improves the filler dispersion in a silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compound. In the present work, influence of molecular weight or the liquid BR on properties of a silica-filled SBR compound was studied. Minimum and maximum torques in the rheocurve for the compound containing the liquid BR with higher molecular weight (HLBR) are lower than those for the compound containing the liquid BR with lower one (LLBR) while the delta torques are nearly the same. Mooney scorch time of the compound containing HLBR is faster than that of the compound containing LLBR. Modulus or the compound containing HLBR is lower than that of the compound containing LLBR while tensile strength of the former is higher than that of the latter. The elongation at break of the former is also longer than that of the latter. Stability for the thermal aging at $90^{\circ}C$ for 3 days is less favorable for the former than for the latter.

  • We determined the optical constants of organic light emitting material of Alq$_3$ in a spectral range between 1.5 and 6 eV using the physical model introduced by Forouhi and Bloomer[Phys. Rev. B 34, pp. 7018-7026, 1986.]. The initial parameters of $A_i,\;B_i,\;C_i$ of Forouhi-Bloomer dispersion relations were determined from the absorption peaks and widths of absorption spectra of the Alq$_3$ film. The refractive index of substrate, a fused silica, is derived from the Sellmeier equation with the measured transmittance and reflectance spectra. Then, the complex refractive index and thickness of the Alq$_3$ film were calculated by use of a nonlinear least square fitting program with the Forouhi-Bloomer dispersion relation and the measured transmittance and reflectance spectra.
