  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different surface treatment methods on the microtensile bond strength of resin cement to resin nanoceramic (RNC). MATERIALS AND METHODS. RNC onlays (Lava Ultimate) (n=30) were treated using air abrasion with and without a universal adhesive, or HF etching followed by a universal adhesive with and without a silane coupling agent, or tribological silica coating with and without a universal adhesive, and divided into 6 groups. Onlays were luted with resin cement to dentin surfaces. A microtensile bond strength test was performed and evaluated by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test (${\alpha}$=.05). A nanoscratch test, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used for micromorphologic analysis (${\alpha}$=.05). The roughness and elemental proportion were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS. Tribological silica coating showed the highest roughness, followed by air abrasion and HF etching. After HF etching, the RNC surface presented a decrease in oxygen, silicon, and zirconium ratio with increasing carbon ratio. Air abrasion with universal adhesive showed the highest bond strength followed by tribological silica coating with universal adhesive. HF etching with universal adhesive showed the lowest bond strength. CONCLUSION. An improved understanding of the effect of surface treatment of RNC could enhance the durability of resin bonding when used for indirect restorations. When using RNC for restoration, effective and systemic surface roughening methods and an appropriate adhesive are required.

  • Transparent organic-inorganic hybrid hard coating films were prepared by the addition of $SiO_2$ or $ZrO_2$, as an inorganic filler to improve the hardness property, filler was highly dispersed in the acrylic resin. To improve the compatibility in the acrylic resin, $SiO_2$ or $ZrO_2$ is surface-modified using various silanes with variation of the modification time and silane content. Depending on the content and kind of the modified inorganic oxide, transparent modified inorganic sols were formulated in acryl resin. Then, the sols were bar coated and cured on PET films to investigate the optical and mechanical properties. The optimized film, which has a modified $ZrO_2$ content of 4 wt% markedly improved in terms of the hardness, haze, and transparency as compared to neat acrylate resin and acrylate resin containing modified $SiO_2$ content of 8 wt%. Meanwhile, the low transparency and high haze of these films slowly appeared at $SiO_2$ content above 10 wt% and $ZrO_2$ content of 5 wt%, but the hardness values were maintained at 2H and 3H, respectively, in comparison with the HB of neat acrylate resin.

  • Aramid fibers are being used increasingly in a wide range of application due to low density, high specific strength, high modulus, and high thermal resistance. But owing to its special physical and chemical structures, it is sensitive to absorb the ultraviolet light which will degrade the fiber's useful mechanical properties and structure. In this paper, the sol-gel technique was used to improve the photo-stability of p-aramid fibers. $TiO_2$, modified $SiO_2$/$TiO_2$ sol were used as coating solutions. The influence of the such coatings on the photo-stability of p-aramid fiber was investigated by an accelerated photo-ageing method using xenon lamp. The photo-stability of p-aramid fiber showed obvious improvement after the modified silica binding coating. But the amorphous $TiO_2$ sol coatings showed a negative effect. After 144h light exposure, the modified silane binder-coated fibers showed less degradation in mechanical properties with the retained tensile strength greater than about 70% of the original value.

  • In this study, the development of the room temperature curable silica-based coating compositions for anticorrosive and antifouling performance in marine environments was carried out. The marine (plant) structures with many exposed parts are operated in harsh marine environments such as strong ultraviolet rays, extreme temperature differences and salt water corrosion. Organic paints that are easily degraded under these environments and easily eroded by physical stimuli such as waves can not play a role properly. Dense ceramic coatings on marine structures provide careful protections even in saltwater environments due to their high hardness and rust resistance. Therefore, in the case of ceramic coatings, their use and application range in marine structures can be greatly improved due to their functional advantages. In the present study, silica-based coating compositions based on colloidal silica with silane coupling agents, curing salts, and ceramic fillers were developed, and their applications as protective coatings for corrosion protection and fouling prevention in seawater were also studied.

  • Objective: We aimed to investigate the effects of silanation time on the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal brackets on gold alloy in a silicoating procedure and compare the SBS of metal brackets on gold alloy and enamel. Methods: Type III gold alloy plates were sandblasted with 30-${\mu}m$ silicon dioxide. Excess particles were removed with gentle air after silica coating, and silane was applied. Maxillary central-incisor metal brackets were bonded to each conditioned alloy surface with a light curing resin adhesive for 1 s, 30 s, 60 s, or 120 s after applying silane. The brackets were also bonded to 36 upper central incisors with the same adhesive. All samples were cured for 40 s with a light emitting diode curing light. The SBS was tested after 1 h and after 24 h. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) of the samples was also compared. Results: The 60-s and 120-s silanation time groups showed a higher SBS than the other groups (p < 0.05). Samples tested after 24 h showed a significantly higher SBS than did the samples tested after 1 h (p < 0.05). The 1-s group showed higher ARI scores. The one-way analysis of variance and Student-Newman-Keuls test showed that the SBS values of the 60-s and 120-s silanation time groups were not significantly different from the SBS values of enamel. Conclusions: Adequate silanation time is required to produce sufficient bond strength during silicoating.

  • Acrylic terminated polyurethane prepolymers were synthesized by capping the NCO groups of polyurethane prepolymers, prepared from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polycarbonate diol (PCD) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), with pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA). Subsequently, silylated acrylic terminated prepolymers were prepared by capping the NCO groups of acrylic terminated polyurethane prepolymers with different types of silane coupling agents, glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) or aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APS). The average particle size of pure waterborne polyurethane solution, measured by the dynamic light scattering method, was increased from 14.3 nm to 208.6 nm by adding PETA and APS. Also, the coating film of silylated acrylic terminated waterborne polyurethane showed better abrasion resistance and pencil hardness than that of pure waterborne polyurethane.

  • Transparent, abrasion resistant coatings with 4~13 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness were prepared by spin-coating on polycarbonates with organic/inorganic hybrid solutions, followed by UV curing and heat treatment at 12$0^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours. The coating solutions were composed of inorganic phase and organic phase in 0:100, 20:80, 30:70, 50:50, 80:20 wt% ratios, respectively, mixed with photoinitiator, senaitizer and surfactant. The inorganic phase was formed by sol-gel reaction of TEOS and silane coupling agent MPTMS in 1 : 2 or 2 : 1 molar ratios, the organic phase consisted of difunctional urethane acrylate oligomeric resin, multifunctional acrylate TMPTA and HDDA in 4 : 3 : 3 wt% ratio. The coating systems were investigated by FT-IR, $^{29}$ Si-NMR spectra. In addition, TGA/DSC for thermal analysis and SEM, AFM observation for coated surface were examined. Gererally, the homogeneity of phases, the surface smoothness of coating and abrasion resistance were improved with the higher content of inorganic component. Namely, coating system with below 10 $\AA$ surface roughness and T$_{g}$ of 15$0^{\circ}C$ showed only 10% decrease in light transmittance after abrasion test, whereas uncoated polycarbonate substrate exhibited 46% decrease..

  • Colloidal Silica (CS)/methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and CS/MTMS/epoxysilane (ES) sol solutions were prepared using various synthesizing parameters such as reaction time and types of CS and silane. In order to understand their physical and chemical properties, sol-gel coating films on glass were fabricated. In the case of the CS/MTMS sol, the coating films had high contact angle and more enhanced flat surface than the CS/MTMS/ES sol. In the case of thermal stability, thermal degradation of the CS/MTMS and CS/MTMS/ES coating films did not occur up to $550^{\circ}C$ and $440^{\circ}C$, respectively. The coating films prepared from the CS/MTMS sol were thicker than those of the CS/MTMS/ES sol. In addition, the coating films prepared from single CS were thicker than those of mixed CS. Hardness of the coating films prepared from CS/MTMS increased by adding ES. In case of the mixed CS, the hardness decreased by adding ES.

  • The purpose of this study is to know whether Yttrium-stabilized-tetragonal -zirconia-polycrystal(Y-TZP ceramic) gets enough shear bond strength for clinical uses by applying veneering composite resin through surface treatment on it and finally to compare it with the case of applying veneering porcelain. LavaTM zirconia frameworks(3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) were prepared. Group P was manufactured with LavaTM Ceram(3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) in cylindrical shape which has 4mm diameter, 5mm height. Group ZSR disposed sandblasting and applied silane, bonding agent and after that indirect composite resin was applied. Group ZRR got tribochemical coating by RocatecTM system(3M ESPE. Seefeld, Germany) and treated silane. Finally Group ZPR took the same treatment and applied LavaTM Ceram in the size of 0.3-0.5mm height. After burning out, sandblasting, HF and silane was applied. And then, indirect composite resin was applied. 1000 cycle thermocycling was performed in $5-55^{\circ}C$ and shear bond strength was measured. There were no significant differences between combining veneering porcelain to Y-TZP ceramic group and combining veneering resin to Y-TZP ceramic group in the aspect of shear bond strength (p>.05).

  • $TiO_2$-nanoparticle-dispersed silicone was applied to a LED package and the light efficiency of the LED package was evaluated in this study. The addition of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles in silicone increased refractive index, which improved the light efficiency of the LED package. The $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were fabricated by hydrothermal synthesis and were dispsersed by a vinyl silane coating treatment. After the silane treatment, the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles dispersed with diameters of 10~40 nm but rod-shape $TiO_2$ nanoparticles with lengths of 100 nm were also observed. The refractive index increased with the $TiO_2$ concentration in silicone, while the transmittance decreased with the $TiO_2$ concentration. The light efficient of the LED package with $TiO_2$+silicone encapsulant was higher than that of the LED package with no $TiO_2$ in silicone encapsulant.
