  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the difference between open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and intermaxillary fixation (IMF) of mandibular fractures. Methods: A total of one hundred twenty-seven patients who were treated for mandibular fractures at Chosun University Dental Hospital, from January 2008 to December 2010, and analyzed their prognoses based on the use of IMF at the time of fracture reduction. The patients were divided into two groups; the manual reduction group without IMF and IMF group. Results: After reduction of the mandibular fracture, good results were obtained with majority patients. Nonetheless, seven patients (13.0%) in manual reduction method without arch bars or IMF, developed complications after surgery. Three patients underwent IMF due to occlusal instability after surgery, while one patient underwent re-operation. Thus, a significant difference was not observed between the IMF and manual reduction groups. Conclusion: Manual reduction and IMF at mandibular simple fracture could produce good results. In case of mandibular simple fracture, it was recommended with only manual reduction without IMF or IMF during a short period.

  • Purpose: Reduction mammaplasty is one of the most commonly performed operations in plastic surgery. Although secondary surgery is occasionally required for minor aesthetic problems or for treatment of the complications of the primary surgery, there are no clear operative guidelines of management. We report here two cases of secondary reduction mammaplasty using differrent pedicle from the initial ones. Methods: One case of secondary reduction mammaplasty were performed using medial pedicle after central (19 years) pedicle reduction mammaplasty because of subsequent breast ptosis and asymmetry. The other case were performed using medial pedicle after superior (4 years) pedicle reduction mammaplasty with contralateral immediate breast reconstruction with TRAM flap because of subsequent breast ptosis and asymmetry. Care was taken to include sufficient width of pedicle and adequate soft tissue attachment beneath the nipple - areolar complex. Results: There was no significant complication such as nipple - areolar necrosis or fat necrosis. The results were well maintained throughout the follow - up period. Conclusion: Medial pedicle reduction mammaplasty can be safely performed after central or superior pedicle reduction mammaplasty when sufficient width of pedicle and adequate soft tissue attachment beneath the nipple - areolar complex are maintained.

  • Antimicrobial activity of silk and cotton fabrics dyed with gromwell colorants was examined by shake flask method. The effects of bacterial reduction rate on dye uptake and mordanting were explored. The silk(K/S value 8) and cotton fabric (K/S value 4) dyed with gromwell colorants showed high bacterial reduction rate of 99 % and 88 %, respectively. Post-mordanted silk fabric increased at K/S value, also showed higher bacterial reduction rate than unmordanted. But the effects of antimicrobial activity on mordants showed respectively different results. Pre-mordanted cotton fabric except Sn mordant increased at K/S value, but it was not significant. Pre-mordanted cotton fabric showed significantly higher bacterial reduction rate than unmordanted. Therefore, it was considered that dye uptake of cotton fabric dyed with gromwell colorants and mordants were involved in the bacterial reduction rate. It was concluded that gromwell colorants had antimicrobial activity.

  • The goal of this paper is to show how multivariate regression analysis with high-dimensional responses is facilitated by the response dimension reduction. Multivariate regression, characterized by multi-dimensional response variables, is increasingly prevalent across diverse fields such as repeated measures, longitudinal studies, and functional data analysis. One of the key challenges in analyzing such data is managing the response dimensions, which can complicate the analysis due to an exponential increase in the number of parameters. Although response dimension reduction methods are developed, there is no practically useful illustration for various types of data such as so-called large p-small n data. This paper aims to fill this gap by showcasing how response dimension reduction can enhance the analysis of high-dimensional response data, thereby providing significant assistance to statistical practitioners and contributing to advancements in multiple scientific domains.

  • This study aimed to determine the management and environmental factors affecting medical expense reduction. For analysis, medical expenses were divided into hospitalization expenses and outpatient treatment expenses, and the rate of medical expense reduction was classified into initial and final reduction rates. Data were collected through a direct survey among 205 directors of independent health insurance review departments of hospital-level medical institutions in Korea. The results of the study are discussed below: In the analysis, differences in the initial and final reduction rates of hospitalization expenses and outpatient treatment expenses were compared. The results showed that, in hospitalization expenses, the initial and final reduction rates were both significantly affected by the following management factors: number of beds, number of departments, number of personnel reviewing health insurance cases, and total number of employees. Further, in outpatient treatment expenses, the initial and final reduction rates were both affected significantly by the following management factors: management of medical records, number of beds, number of departments, number of personnel reviewing health insurance, and total number of employees. The management factors significantly affecting both the initial and final reduction rates were higher number of beds for hospitalization expenses and electronic medical record management for outpatient treatment expenses. The environmental factors significantly affecting both the initial and final reduction rates of hospitalization expenses were a highly cooperative work environment, better implementation of indicator management systems, and overtime pay. Better implementation of indicator management system and a committee for handling medical expenses had significant effects on the initial reduction rate for outpatient treatment expenses. A highly cooperative work environment, better implementation of indicator management system, and overtime pay had significant effects on the final reduction rate for outpatient treatment expenses.

  • Embedded processors often accommodate two instruction sets, a standard instruction set and a compressed instruction set. With the compressed instruction set, code size can be reduced while instruction count (and consequently execution time) can be increased. To achieve code size reduction without significant increase of execution time, this paper proposes a new compressed instruction set architecture, called TOE (Two Operations Execution). The proposed instruction set format includes the parallel bit that indicates an instruction can be executed simultaneously with the next instruction. To add the parallel bit, TOE instruction format reduces the destination register field. The reduction of the register field limits the number of registers that are accessible by an instruction. To overcome the limited accessibility of registers, TOE adapts non-homogeneous register partition in which registers are divided into multiple subsets, each of which are accessed by different groups of instructions. With non-homogeneous registers, each instruction can access only a limited number of registers, but an entire program can access all available registers. With efficient non-homogeneous register allocator, all registers can be used in a balanced manner. As a result, the increase of code size due to register spills is negligible. Experimental results show that more than 30% of TOE instructions can be executed in parallel without significant increase of code size when compared to existing Thumb instruction set.

  • Polycarboxylics acids are used as crosslinking agents for cotton cellulose to produce durable finished press cotton fabric. It has been observed that the strength of the cotton fabric treated with polycarboxylic acids showed significant reduction as a result of the crosslinking process. The effect of acid-catalyzed depolymerization on the tear strength of cotton fabric is investigated by evaluating the cotton fabric treated by succinic acid, which does not crosslink cotton cellulose and form little ester on the cotton fabric. We find that the tear strength of cotton fabric treated with succinic acid decreases at elevated temperature due to acid-catalyzed depolymerization of cellulose. The magnitude of fabric strength reduction increases as the acid concentration increases. At a constant acid concentration, it increases as the curing temperature and time increases. It decreases as the pH of the acid solution increases. We also find that the dissociation constant of an acid also has a significant effect on the fabric strength reduction. The magnitude of fabric tear strength reduction increases as the acid dissociation constant decreases.

  • This paper analyses the impact of energy-saving investment on Greenhouse gas emissions using a model of energy demand in Korea. SUR method was employed to estimate the demand equation. The econometric estimates provide information about the energy price divisia index, sector income, and energy saving-investment elasticities of energy demand. Except for energy price divisia, the elasticities of each variable are statistically significant. Also, the price and substitution elasticities of each energy price are similar to the results reported by the previous studies. The energy-saving investment is statistically significant and elasticities of each sector is inelastic. Using the coefficient of energy-saving investment and carbon transmission coefficient, the amount of reduction of energy demand and the reduction of carbon emissions can be estimated. The simulation is performed with the scenario that the energy-saving investment increase by 10~50%, keeping up with Equipment Investment Plan of 30% increase in energy-saving investment by 2000. The results show that the reduction of energy demand measured as 11.2% based upon 1995's level of the energy demand, in industrial sector. Accordingly, the carbon emissions will be reduced by 11.3% based upon 1995's level of the carbon emissions in industrial sector.
