  • This paper proposes a new concept of a signal constellation of the recently introduced half-symbol-rate-carrier phase-shift keying (HSRC-PSK) modulations for bandwidth-efficient high speed data communications. Since the HSRC-PSK modulations contain different symbol energies representing the same bit sequences due to the loss of orthogonality of their HSRC signals, it is very hard to represent the symbol using the conventional signal constellation. To resolve the problem, two different energies are assigned to represent one symbol for the HSRC offset quadrature phase shift keying (OQPSK) modulation. Similarly, the different energies exist to display the different symbol for HSRC minimum shift keying (MSK) modulation. With the proposed signal space representation, HSRC-PSK symbol can easily be shown with a two-dimensional scatter plot which provides helpful information of evaluating HSRC-PSK signal's quality.

  • Multi-dimensional DC-free trellis codes based on two-dimensional constellation which can be omplemented more easily than conventional codes are proposed and their performances are analyzed in this paper. 2N-dimensional constellation of the proposed codes is constructed by concatenating N 2-dimensional constellation. Thus, for the proposed codes, information bits can be assigned easily to each signal point of the 2-dimensional consteellation and DC-free characteristic can be simply obtained by the symmetric structure of the constellation. In addition, since Viterbi decoder can calculate multi-dimensional Euchlidean distance between signals by simple sum of each 2-dimensional Euclidean distanc, decoding complexity can be reduced. The performance analysis shows that the proposed codes have almost same spectral characteristic and error performance as compared with conventional codes. However, the complexity is shown to be reduced further due to the construction method of contellation and the simple decoding algorithm of the proposed codes.

  • We introduce a rotated square QAM constellation with low peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) for coordinate interleaved orthogonal design (CIOD). The proposed signal constellation has much lower PAPR than the ordinary square QAM constellations for CIOD while it keeps almost the same coordinate product distance (CPD).

  • This paper considers a communication system consisting of a vector quantizer with selected code vectors with mapped into points in the modulated signal space. The modulated signal is transmitted over a Rayleigh flat fading channel. We optimize the modulated signal constellation to minimize the overall distortion of the system with the fixed vector quantization codebook. The optimization is obtained by partitioning the modulated signal space. Simulation results show that the signal constellation based on the proposed optimization scheme outperforms the conventional methods.

  • Due to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) modernization, the recently launched GNSS satellites transmit signals at various frequency bands of L1, L2 and L5. Considering the Korea Positioning System (KPS) signal and other GNSS augmentation signals in the future, there is a high probability of applying more complex communication techniques to the new GNSS signals. For the reason, GNSS receivers based on flexible Software Defined Radio (SDR) concept needs to be developed to evaluate various experimental communication techniques by accessing each signal processing module in detail. In this paper, we introduce a multi-constellation (GPS/Galileo/BeiDou) multi-band (L1/L2/L5) SDR by utilizing Ettus USRP N210. The signal reception module of the developed SDR includes down-conversion, analog-to-digital conversion, signal acquisition, and tracking. The down-conversion module is designed based on the super-heterodyne method fitted for MHz sampling. The signal acquisition module performs PRN code generation and FFT operation and the signal tracking module implements delay/phase/frequency locked loops only by software. In general, it is difficult to sample entire main lobe components of L5 band signals due to their higher chipping rate compared with L1 and L2 band signals. Experiment result shows that it is possible to acquire and track the under-sampled signals by the developed SDR.

  • AT-DMB system has been developed to increase data rate up to double of conventional T-DMB in same bandwidth while maintaining backward compatibility. The AT-DMB system adopted hierarchical modulation which adds BPSK signal or QPSK signal as enhanced layer to existing DQPSK signal. The enhanced layer signal should be small enough to maintain backward compatibility and to minimize the coverage loss of existing T-DMB service area. But this causes the enhanced layer signal of AT-DMB susceptible to fading effect in transmission channel. A turbo code which has powerful error correction capability is applied to the enhanced layer signal of the AT-DMB system for compensating channel distortion. We developed the prototype AT-DMB transmitter and receiver systems for performance evaluation. LAB test for analysing the effect of constellation ratio between existing base layer signal and enhancement layer signal, was conducted and the measurement results are shown with analysis comments.

  • It is known that triangular QAM with triangular signal constellations gets better SER gain than square QAM with rectangular signal constellations. In the paper, we propose an exact and general closed-form expression of the probability of symbol error for generalized TQAM, which has been currently researched. We verify that the simulation is consistent with the derived equation of generalized TQAM. And, we also suggest the optimal signal constellation schemes for generalized TQAM at given SNR values.

  • In this paper, blind equalization technique using Gaussian two-cluster model is proposed. The proposed approach, by modeling the received M-QAM signals as Gaussian distributed two-cluster, minimizes the computational complexity and enhances the reliability of the signal estimates. In addition, by using a nonlinear estimator with variable parameters to estimate the transmitted signal, and by selectively applying the reduced constellation and the original constellation when estimating the signals, the reliability of the signal estimation was further improved. As a result, the proposed approach has improved the performance while reducing the complexity of the equalizer. Through computer simulations for blind equalization of higher-order signals of 64-QAM, it was confirmed that the proposed method showed better performance than traditional approaches.

  • This paper proposes the Hybrid-CRMMA adaptive equalization algorithm that is possible to improves the performance of CR-MMA based on adaptive modulus and adaptive stepsize. The 16-QAM nonconstant modulus signal is reduced to 4-QAM constant modulus signal, and the error signal were obtained based on the fixed statistic modulus of transmitted signal. It is possible to improving the currently MMA adaptive equalization performance. The proposed Hybrid-CRMMA composed of adaptive modulus which is propotional to the power of equalizer output and adaptive stepsize which is function of the nonlinearties of error signal, and its improved equalization performance were confirmed by computer simulation. For this purpose, the output signal constellation, the residual isi and maximum distortion and MSE that is for the convergence characteristics, the SER that is meaning the robustness of external noise of algorithm were used. As a result of computer simulation, it was confirmed that the proposed Hybrid-CRMMA has more superior performance in every index compared to currently CR-MMA.

  • Recently, GNSS users can utilize various navigation satellite thanks to GPS modernization, renewal of GLONASS, and development of Galileo and Beidou. And availability performance of users is expected to be improved because these new navigation satellites transmit L5 signal as well as L1 signal, and users can directly estimate the ionospheric delays. In accordance with these changes existing Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) which considers only GPS L1 signal is being developed to support dual frequency and multi-constellation GNSS users. This paper describes the main features of dual-frequency, multi-constellation SBAS algorithms and estimates the performance in Korean region by simulation.
