  • A promising approach to improve the performance of mobile location system is the use of antenna arrays in both transmitter and receiver sides. Using advanced array signal processing techniques, such multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems can offer more mobile location information by exploiting the spatial properties of the multipath channel. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to determine the position of mobile terminal based on estimated multipath signal parameters using only one base station in MIMO communication systems. This approach intends to minimize the error occurring from the estimation of multiple paths and gives an optimal estimation of the position of mobile terminal by simultaneously calculating a set of nonlinear location equations. This solution breaks the bottleneck of conventional mobile location systems which have to require multilateration of at least three base stations.

  • The conventional real-time signal control strategy for oversaturated situation generally requires a number of detectors at the intersection in order to identify the queue length at each approach. Also, existing strategy for the spillback has limited effect due to the temporal spillback control which only reduce the green split at the approach. In this study, a signal control system utilizing the imagery information from ITS roadside equipment is developed for operation of oversaturated intersections. The strategy calculates the saturation ratio based on the queue length extracted from ITS RSE, and designs the signal control variables according to the saturation ratio. The signal control strategy is divided into two phases: oversaturated and supersaturated. In oversaturated conditions, timing plan for main approach is optimized by the queue length. In oversaturated conditions where spillback might occur, the signal timing is designed in order to avoid the spillback. To increase field adaptability, the strategy is designed to adjust the split length, all-red-time, and clearance time, and keep the major signal control variables intact. The result of the simulation shows that in oversaturated conditions, the improvement is similar to the real-time signal control system. In case of, oversaturated conditions, however, the effect of the strategy is superior to that of a real-time system.

  • Suppose that an observed process can be written as the additive model of the signal process and the noise process with unknown parameters. In practice the signal process is not directly observed. We consider the problem of estimating parameter from the observation process using the quasi-likelihood method.

  • This paper concerns with signal cancellation problem in a linearly constrained adaptive array processor in coherent environment. Alternate mainbeam nulling approach was proposed to prevent the signal cancellation phenomenon. The linearly constrained LMS algorithm with a unit gain constraint and that with a null constraint in the direction of the desired signal is alternately implemented to reduce the signal interaction between the desired signal and the interferences, which is the main cause of the signal cancellation. It is shown that the proposed method performs better than a conventional method.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new method for detecting and estimating faults on a power line using the time-frequency domain reflectometry system. The system rests upon time-frequency signal analysis and uses a chirp signal which is multiplied by Gaussian envelope. The chirp signal is used as a reference signal, and we can get the reflected signal from a fault on a wire. To detect and estimate faults, we analyze the reflected signal by Wigner time-frequency distribution function and normalized time-frequency cross correlation function. In this paper we design an optimal reference signal for power line and implement a system for estimating fault distance on a power line with the TFDR implemented by PXI equipments. This approach is verified by some experiments with HIV 2.25mm power lines.

  • In a large signal intersection, it is the most important to set phase sequences and phase intervals of traffic signal in order to improve the efficiency of the capacity as well as safety. These setting allows to select the best sequence of signal phase among several alternatives, and thus to rearrange the starting and ending points of the individual phase using an effective interphase periods (EIP). The EIP is a gap between previous and current traffic movements at a potential collision point in an intersection. Each of traffic movements has an equality for safety and efficiency at the balanced condition of EIP. This paper presents how to set optimally the phase sequences and intervals of traffic signal in an intersection using phase based approach. And in the second part, we applied the theory developed in the first part. In particular, a numerical example of phase base signal setting is presented using a matrix computation method in order to select the best sequence among several alternatives, and thus to rearrange the starting and ending points of the individual phase using the EIP. This method also allows to apply to optimum signal setting even in five-lag or staggered-type intersection.
