  • White rot on Allium species recently had a high incidence as increased cultivating areas of tropical garlic types in Korea. Two types of Sclerotium have been known as causal agents producing different size and shapes of sclerotia in infested fields. We developed a new method for isolation of two types of sclerotia from infested field soils that can be used for ecological study of sclerotium spp. and establishment of control strategy. Soil samples collected from heavily infested fields were evenly mixed and placed on a automatic sieve shaker connected with tap water. After 10 min. of shaking, residues on 0.5mm and 0.25mm sieve were separately collected and suspended with 70% sugar solution, which method floats sclerotia in aqueous layer. Then, floated fraction was carefully separated and mixed with a same volume of 1% sodium hypochlorite solution to differentiate with organic materials. This method provides direct count of sclerotia under dissecting microscopy.

  • On the constructions of fill type dams, usually the constructions materials is desired to be obtained in vicinity ofthe dam sitc to justify economical feasilblity of the project. In the stability analysis of the dams, core parts takesa small fraction of the slip circle and main function of core is to decrease dam permeability. This paper shows results of various tests as physical properties, compactions (using single, double triple and four times of the tandard compaction energy) and the permeability tests. Single decomposed granite and mixed materials with clay soils were used in this test. And conclusions of these tests are as follows; 1. Criteira of weathering ratio should be caleulated by density measarment. 2. Permeability coefficient maiuly depends on th #200 sieve passing, and also passing soil quantities depends on the weathering condition of the soil. 3. It was established that low weathered decomposed granite can not be used for the core materials of the fill type dams. On the other hand, moderately weathered decomposed granite soil with particles could pass through #200 sieve in a quantity over 10%, could chieve permeability in a magnitude of $1{\times}10^{-5} cm/see$. 4. With the decomposed granite soil it is possible to perform three times larger compaction energy than the standard energy without any problems.

  • Recently, centrifuge tests have been widely used as tools in geotechnical engineering researches in domestic and foreign. However, the size of these centrifuge facilities is very large and thus the tests require for long time, high expense, and many labors. In this study, therefore, a small capacity(2g ton) of instructional centrifuge, which can conduct tests in a short period of time effectively, was introduced. The results of centrifuge tests conducted on the retaining wall both passive and active cases was used. Medium size of sand was used with sieve off fines in sand using #40 sieve. Based on the test results, this centrifuge facility introduced in here can be enough used for geotechnical engineering education for graduate and undergraduate students.

  • To use fly ash as an additive for concrete, authors collected 15 kinds of domestic fly ashes and tested the chemical compositions and physical properties of the fly ashes. Fluidity of the fly ash paste was also investigated. The result shows that the chemical compositions of the fly ashes were in the range of regulation of Korean Industrial Standards except ignition loss and the following relationships in fly ash were studied; specific surface and residue in standard sieve, specific surface and unit weight, residue in standard sieve and ignition loss. For the given flow properties, fly ash paste required higher water-binder ratio than cement paste.
