Squeeze casting was performed to fabricate the SiC whisker reinforced magnesium matrix composites, and the suitability of the squeeze casting for the production of the sound composites was determined by micro/macro-structures observations and tensile test. The two-directional infiltration of the melt and the removal of air during infiltration using the devised mold were necessary to produce the composites. The pressure of 100 MPa was effective for the production of composites with the SiC whisker volume fraction of 30%, but the pressure should be lower than 50 MPa in case of below 20% in the volume fraction. The SiC whiskers in the squeeze cast composites were randomly and densely aligned, and the SiC whiskers/magnesium interfaces were continuously well-bonded. The elastic modulus, 0.2% proof stress and tensile strength in the composite were about 2.5times, l0times and 4times as large as those of magnesium, respectively, indicating that the squeeze casting sufficiently provides the high strength magnesium composites reinforced with SiC whiskers.
Although C/C composites have excellent mechanical properties at high temperature, the disadvantage of oxidation in air restricts their applications. Thus a lot of investments have been studied to improve this drawback. In this study, SiC used as a thermal protective coating material possesses almost the same expansion coefficient compared to that of carbon, so SiC was coated on 4D C/C composites by Pack-Cementation process. For SiC-coated C/C composites, optical microscopy observations were performed to estimate the conversion mechanism involved and air oxidation tests were also performed to evaluate the improvement of oxidation resistance. Afterwards the optimum conditions of coating process were estimated from the results of several analysis and tests.
Effects of the extrusion temperature and die angle on the tensile properties of SiCIyAl composites in powder extrusion have been investigated. SiCP/Al composites were extruded at various extrusion temperatures (450, 500, $550^{\circ}C$) under the extrusion ratio of 25 : 1. The ram speed was maintained at 13 cm/min for all the extrusion conditions. The surface of the extruded rod appeared to be smooth without tearing at 450 and 50$0^{\circ}C$, whereas it was very rough due to tearing at $550^{\circ}C$. It was found that the tensile strength and elongation of the composites extruded at $500^{\circ}C$ are greater than those of composites extruded at $450^{\circ}C$ This is due to the easier plastic deformation of composite extruded at $500^{\circ}C$, compared with the composites extruded at $450^{\circ}C$. The effect of die angle was examined under 20=60, 120, $180^{\circ}$die angles at extrusion temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ under 25:1 extrusion ratio. The tensile strength of the composites extruded with 20=$60^{\circ}$approved to be higher than that of the composties extruded with 28 : 120 and $180^{\circ}$This is attributable to the higher extrusion pressure, which mixed composite powders could be densely consolidated at elevated temperatures, resulting from high friction force between billet and sliding surface of conical die.
The glass-SiC composites have been manufactured via viscous flow of glass for investigating their sinterability and various properties. The relative density of 99.6% could be achieved when 5 wt% SiC was mixed with glass powder, glass-rearranged at 460$^{\circ}C$ for 3 h and then sintered at 665$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The sintered density was decreased as adding more than 5 wt% SiC to glass powder. The resistance properties against hyper velocity copper jet formed by explosion of K215 warhead were compared with other ceramics such as $Al_2O_3$ and pyrex, resulting in lower values than that of $Al_2O_3$.
This study developed fabrication process of $SiC_p/Al$ metal matrix composites as electronic packaging materials by squeeze casting method. The $SiC_p$ preform were fabricated in newly designed preform mold using about 0.8 % of inorganic binder(SiO$_2$) and 5 vol.% of $Al_2O_3$fiber. To infiltrate the molten metal into the preform, fabrication condition such as the temperature and the pressure were selected. Applying the fabrication conditions, heat transfer analysis were preformed using finite element method and thus analyzed the temperature distribution and cooling characteristic during the squeeze casting. For the fabricated composites, impact toughness and thermal expansion coefficient were measured. The metal matrix composites developed in this study have 0.2~0.3 J impact toughness, $8~10 ppm/^{\circ}C$ thermal expansion coefficient and $2.9~3.0g/cm^3$density which is appropriate properties for electronic packaging application.
Effects of sintering additives and sintering temperatures on the sintering behavior and mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced alumina composites have been investigated in this study. Dense (>95% TD) composites were obtained by using 2 wt% $Y_2O_3$ as liquid phase sintering additive. But only porous composite could be obtained when the sintering additives were MgO and $TiO_2$, which were known as the sintering additives for solid state sintering of alumina. Bending strength and fracture toughness were enhanced by reinforcement of SiC whisker. It is belived from the microstructure investigation that the enhanced by strength and toughness could be attribute to the reinforcing and grain growth inhibition effects of SiC whisker. After HIP treatment, fully dense composites were obtained and further enhanced mechanical properties achieved.

Liquid silicon infiltration, which is one of the methods of producing fiber reinforced ceramic composites, has several advantages such as low fabrication cost and good shape formability. In order to confirm LSI process feasibility of SiC fiber, $SiC_f/SiC$ composites were fabricated using three types of SiC fibers (Tyranno SA, LoxM, Tyranno S) which have different crystallinity and oxygen content. Composites that were fabricated with LSI process were well densified by less than 2% of porosity, but showed an obvious difference in 3-point bending strength according to crystallinity and oxygen content. When composites in LSI process was exposed to a high temperature, crystallization and micro structural changes were occurred in amorphous SiOC phase in SiC fiber. Fiber shrinkage also observed during LSI process that caused from reaction in fiber and between fiber and matrix. These were confirmed with changes of process temperature by SEM, XRD and TEM analysis.
Hot restoration mechanism flow stress and stain of the Al2024 composites reinforced with 1,8,15,36, and $44{\mu}m\;SiC_p$(10 vol. %) were studied by hot torsion tests. The hot restoration mechanism of all the composites was found to be dynamic recrystallization(DRX) at $320^{\circ}C$ while that of the composites reinforced with 1 and $8{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ was found to be dynamic recovery(DRX) at $480^{\circ}C$. It was found that the Al2024 composite with $15{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ showed the highest flow stress(${\sim}$223 MPa) at $320^{\circ}C$ under a strain rate of 1.0/sec. Also the highest flow strain of the composites was obtained at $430^{\circ}C$. The com-posites reinforced with 1 and $8{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ showed lower flow stress and higher flow strain at $480^{\circ}C$ than those of the composites reinforced with 15, 36, and $44\;{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ These result were discussed in relation to the transition of the hot restoration mechanism. $DRX{\leftrightarrow}DRV$. The dependence of flow stress on strain rate and temperature was attempted to fit with the hyperbolic sine equation ($\dot{\varepsilon}=A[sinh({\alpha}{\cdot}{\sigma}_p]^n$ exp(-Q/RT)and Zener-Hollomon parameter($Z=\;\dot{\varepsilon}\;exp(Q/RT))$.
The objective of this work was to investigate the effects of SiC particle size(50, 100 ${\mu}m$) and additional elements such as Si, Cu and Ti on aging behavior in Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti)/SiCp composites fabricated by pressureless infiltration method using hardness and wear test, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The peak aging time in Al-5Mg-X(Si, Cu, Ti)/SiCp(50, 100 ${\mu}m$) composites is shorter than Al-5Mg-0.3Si alloy. The peak aging time of 50 ${\mu}m$ SiC particle reinforced Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti) composites is shorter than those of 100 ${\mu}m$ SiC particle reinforced of Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti) composites. The Al-5Mg-0.3Si-0.1Cu-0.1Ti/SiCp(50 ${\mu}m$) composites aged at $180^{\circ}C$ has higher hardness and better wear resistance than any other aged composite. The aging effect is promoted by the addition of Si and Cu in Al-5Mg/SiCp composites, so the wear resistance of Al-5Mg/SiCp composites with Si and Cu elements is enhanced by the aging treatment.
