In this study, effects of oxide additives on mechanical properties and microstructure of A1N and A1N polytype ceramics were investigated. Fine A1N powder was synthesized by nitriding alumiuim hydroxide prepared from Al-isopropoxide, at 1350$^{\circ}C$ for 10h in N2 atmosphere. By adding 3w/o Y2O3, 0.56w/o CaO, and 10w/o SiO2 to AlN powder, AlN and AlN polytype ceramics were prepared by hot-pressing under the pressure of 30 MPa at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. AlN ceramics with no additives formed considerable amount of AlON phase, while AlN ceramics doped with Y2O3 or CaO decreased AlON phase and formed Y-Al or Ca-Al oxide compound. AlN+10w/o SiO2(+3w/o Y2O3) composition produced AlON and AlN polytype compound having 21R as a major phase. Room temperature flexural strength of AlN ceramics with no additive was 246MPa, and room temperature flexural strength and critical temperature difference by thermal shock(ΔTc) of AlN ceramics dooped with Y2O3 or CaO were 532MPa/340$^{\circ}C$ and 423MPa/300$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Y2O3 and CaO used as sintering agent played roles of densification and oxygen removal of AlN ceramics, and affected grain growth/grain morphologies of AlN ceramics.
Changes in phase and microstructure were investigated in the SiC-AlN ceramics prepared by pressureless sintering using yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) as a sintering aid at 200$0^{\circ}C$ and 210$0^{\circ}C$. The SiC/AlN ratio made a remarkable difference in densification, phase relations and the morphology of grains. In the AlN-rich composition, major phase was 2H and microstructure was composed of the densified equiaxed grains irrespective of the sintering temperatures. While those sintered at 200$0^{\circ}C$ were porous with major phase being 3C, the rod-like and the equiaxed grains were coexisted when sintered at 210$0^{\circ}C$ in the SiC-rich composition.
The effect of an AlN additive on the thermoelectric properties of SiC ceramics was studied. Porous SiC ceramics with 48-54% relative density were fabricated by sintering the pressed ${\alpha}-SiC$ powder compacts with AlN at $2100-2200^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in an Ar atmosphere. In the undoped specimens, the Seebeck coefficients were positive (p-type semiconducting) possibly due to a dominant effect of the acceptor impurities (Al, Fe) contained in the starting powder. With AlN addition, the reverse phase transformation of 6H-SiC to 4H-SiC was observed during the sintering process. The electrical conductivity of the AlN doped specimen was larger than that of the undoped specimen under the same conditions, which might be due to a reverse phase trans-formation. The Seebeck coefficient of the AlN doped specimen was also larger than that of the undoped specimen. The density of specimen and the amount of addition had significant effects on the thermoelectric properties.
SiAlON-based ceramics are some of the most typical oxynitride ceramic materials, which can be used as cutting tools for heat-resistant super-alloys (HRSA). SiAlON can be fabricated by using gas-pressure reactive sintering from the raw materials, nitrides and oxides such as $Si_3N_4$, AlN, $Al_2O_3$, and $Yb_2O_3$. In this study, we fabricate $Yb_{m/3}Si_{12-(m+n)}Al_{m+n}O_nN_{16-n}$ (m=0.3, n=1.9, 2.3, 2.7) ceramics by using gas-pressure sintering at different sintering temperatures. Then, the densification behavior, phase formation, microstructure, and hardness of the sintered specimens are characterized. We obtain a fully densified specimen with ${\beta}$-SiAlON after gas-pressure sintering at $1820^{\circ}C$ for 90 min. under 10 atm $N_2$ pressure. These SiAlON ceramic materials exhibited hardness values of ~92.9 HRA. The potential of these SiAlON ceramics for cutting tool application is also discussed.
The powder mixture of Si3N4-AlN-Y2O3, Si3N4-AlN-CeO2 and Si3N4-AlN-Y2O3-CeO2 system was hot-pressed at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h in N2 to prepare $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics. The mechanical property and oxidation behaviour of the prepared $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics were investigated. At 120$0^{\circ}C$, oxidation resistance was best for the Y2O3 added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics and oxidation rate increased when the amount of CeO2 increased. But when the mixture of Y2O3 and CeO2 added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics showed a good oxidation resistance. Fracture toughness of (Y2O3+CeO2) added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics was higher than Y2O3 added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics.
Fine Si-Al-OH coprecipitate powders were prepared from Si- and Al-alkoxides by the hydrolysis method. $\beta$-Sialon powder was obtained from prepared Si-Al-OH coprecipitate by the simultaneous reduction and nitridation method. The syntehsized Sialon powder was pressureless sintered at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 90 min in N2 atmosphere. The characterization of the Sialon powder was performed with XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and particle size analysis. The sinterability and mechanical properties of sintered bodies were investigated in terms of relative density, M.O.R., fracture toughness, hardness and the morphology of microstructure. The highest values of their mechanical properties were obtained for the $\beta$-Sialon ceramics at Z=1 and those values are as follows : M.O.R., KIC and HV of $\beta$-Sialon ceramics(Z=1) are 499.1 MPa, 5.9MN/m3/2 and 18.7GPa, respectively.

${\beta}-SiAlON$, based on its high fracture toughness, good strength and low abrasion resistance, has been adopted in several industrial fields such as bearings, turbine blades and non-ferrous metal refractories. In general, ${\beta}-SiAlON$ is fabricated by reactive sintering using expensive $Si_3N_4$ and AlN as starting materials. On the other hand, in this study, a cheaper ${\beta}-SiAlON$ starting powder synthesized by SHS was employed to improve price competitiveness compared to that of the reactive sintering process. ${\beta}-SiAlON$ ceramics with various content of the sintering additive $Y_2O_3$ up to 7 wt% were fabricated by conventional pressureless sintering at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 2 to 8 h under $N_2$ pressure of 0.1 MPa. The specimen with 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ exhibited the best mechanical properties: hardness of 14 GPa, biaxial strength of 830 MPa, fracture toughness of $5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and wear rate of about $3{\times}10^{-6}mm^3/N{\cdot}m$.
Dense $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic tool materials with various grain size were produced by sintering-HIP treatment and by gas-pressure sintering. The fracture toughness was measured by indentation fracture and indentation strength method for both ceramics with various grain size. The effect of the grain size on the fracture toughness was evaluated, and the correlation between fracture toughness and mechanical properties such as hardness, Young\`s modulus and flexural strength of these ceramic were also investigated. The highest fracture toughness of around 6.7 MPa.m(sup)1/2 was obtained in Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics with grain size of 1.58${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. With a larger grain size of $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics, the fracture toughness was generally increased. The increased fracture toughness of these ceramic also improved the flexural strength although the hardness decreased considerably. Similar results were obtained in grain size and mechanical properties on both $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic tool materials.
The powders of the system Si3N4-Y2O3-AlN were prepared using Si(OC2H5)4 and YCl3.6H2O together with commercial AlN powder. $\alpha$-Si3N4 was prepared by the carbothermal reduction and nitridation of the hydrolyzed gel at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 10h in N2 atmosphere. YCl3.6H2O was observed to be changed to Y2O3 during the reaction. $\alpha$-Sialon(X=0.2, 0.4, 0.6) ceramics were obtained by hot-pressing the Si3N4-Y2O3-AlN mixture at 178$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h under 30 MPa. The content of $\alpha$-Sialon increased with increasing metal solubility(x value) and $\alpha$-Sialon single phase was obtained at the metal solubility of 0.6. With increasing metal solubility, flexural strength, fracture toughness and thermal shock resistence were decreased, while the microhardness was increased. Large elongated $\beta$-Si3N4 grains were mainly observed at lower metal solubility. Mechanical prorerties of the sintered ceramics with X=0.2 were measured as follows : flexural strength ; 650 MPa, fracture toughness ; 3.63 MN/m3/2, hardness ; 14.7 GPa, thermal shock resistence temperature ; 58$0^{\circ}C$.

A cost-effective route to synthesize $\beta$-SiAlONs from Si mixtures by reaction bonding followed by post-sintering was investigated. Three different z values, 0.45, 0.92 and 1.87, in $Si_{6-z}Al_zO_zN_{8-z}$ without excess liquid phase were selected to elucidate the mechanism of SiAlON formation and densification. For RBSN (reaction-bonded silicon nitride) specimens prior to post-sintering, nitridation rates of more than 90% were achieved by multistep heating to $1400^{\circ}C$ in flowing 5%$H_2$/95%$N_2$; residual Si was not detected by XRD analysis. An increase in density was acquired with increasing z values in post-sintered specimens, and this tendency was explained by the presence of higher amounts of transient liquid phase at larger z values. Measured z values from the synthesized $\beta$-SiAlONs were similar to the values calculated for the starting compositions. Slight deviations in z values between measurements and calculations were rationalized by a reasonable application of the characteristics of the nitriding and post-sintering processes.
