SiC/SiC composites and monolithic SiC materials have been fabricated by the melt infiltration process, through the creation of crystallized SiC phase by the chemical reaction of C and Si. The reinforcing material used in this system was a braided Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber with double interphases of BN and SiC. The microstructures and the mechanical properties of RS-SiC based materials were investigated through means of SEM, TEM, EDS and three point bending test. The matrix morphology of RS-SiS/SiC composites was greatly composed of the SiC phases that the chemical composition of Si and C is different. The TEM analysis showed that the crystallized SiC phases were finely distributed in the matrix region of RS-SiC/SiC composites. RS-SiC/SiC composites also represented a good flexural strength and a high density, accompanying a pseudo failure behavior.

Microstructural development of $Si_3N_4$/20 vol% SiC nanocomposites doped 2 wt% $Al_2O_3$ and 6 wt% $Y_2O_3$ as sintering additives were analyzed by sintering interruption. Density of samples was significantly increased between $1500^{\circ}C$ and $1700^{\circ}C$, and near full density was achieved at $1800^{\circ}C$. Transformation rate from $\alpha-Si_3N_4$ to $\betha-Si_3N_4$ was increased at $1700^{\circ}C$ and $1800^{\circ}C$, and then elongated matrix grains were appeared. Small size SiC particles had suppressive effect on densification rate and transformation of $Si_3N_4$ phase.
Si3N4(p)-SiC(p) composites were prepared by gas pressure sintering at 190$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. $\alpha$-SiC with average particle size of 0.48${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were dispersed from zero to 50vol% in $\alpha$-Si3N4 with average particle size of 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Y2O3-Al2O3 system was used as sintering aids. When 10vol% of SiC was added to Si3N4, optimum mechanical properties were observed; relative density of 98.8%, flextural strength of 930MPa, fracture toughness of 5.9MPa.m1/2 and hardness value of 1429kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$. Grain growth of $\beta$-Si3N4 was inhibited as the amount of added SiC was increased. SiC particles were found inside the $\beta$-Si3N4 intragrains in case of 10, 20 and 30vol%SiC added composites.
The microstructure and bond strength were investigated on the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints brazed by Ag-5at%Ti alloy. Ag-5at%Ti-2at%Fe and -5at%Fe brazing alloys were also used to see the effects of Fe addition on the bond strength of SiC/SiC brazed joints. Brazing temperature and brazing gap were selected and examined as brazing variables. The microstructure of SiC/SiC brazed joints was affected by Fe addition to the Ag-5at%Ti alloy, but the bond strength was not. Increasing brazing temperature also changed the microstructure of $Ti_5Si_3$ reaction layer and brazing alloy matrix of the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints, but not the bond strength. Brazing gap had a great effects on the bond strength. Decreasing brazing gap from 0.2 mm to 0.1 mm in SiC/SiC brazing increased the bond strength from 187 MPa to 263 MPa and, in SiC/mild steel brazing, from 189 MPa to 212 MPa. It was concluded that the most important parameter on the bond strength in SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel brazing was the relative ratio between brazing gap and specimen size.
The composites were fabricated by adding 30, 35, 40, 45[vol.%] Zirconium Diboride(hereafter, $ZrB_2$) powders as a second phase to Silicon Carbide(hereafter, SiC) matrix. The physical, mechanical and electrical properties of electroconductive SiC ceramic composites by Spark Plasma Sintering(hereafter, SPS) were examined. Reactions between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed in the XRD analysis. The relative density of SiC+30[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+35[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+40[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+45[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites are 88.64[%], 76.80[%], 79.09[%] and 88.12[%], respectively. The XRD phase analysis of the electroconductive SiC ceramic composites reveals high of SiC and $ZrB_2$ and low of $ZrO_2$ phase. The electrical resistivity of SiC+30[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+35[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+40[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+45[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites are $6.74{\times}10^{-4}$, $4.56{\times}10^{-3}$, $1.92{\times}10^{-3}$ and $4.95{\times}10^{-3}[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$ at room temperature, respectively. The electrical resistivity of SiC+30[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+35[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+40[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+45[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ are Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistance(hereafter, PTCR) in temperature ranges from 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 500[$^{\circ}C$]. It is convinced that SiC+40[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composite by SPS can be applied for heater or electrode.
In this study, a monolithic MoSi2 matrix reinforced with 20 vol% SiC particles, a SiC/MoSi2 composite matrix reinforced with 20 vol% ZrO2 particles, and a ZrO2/MoSi2 composite were fabricated using hot press sintering at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under a pressure of 30 MPa. The Vickers hardness and sliding wear resistance of the monolithic MoSi2, ZrO2/MoSi2, and SiC/MoSi2 composite were investigated at room temperature. A wear behavior test was carried out using a disk-type wear tester with a silicon nitride ball. The ZrO2/MoSi2 composite showed an average Vickers hardness value and excellent wear resistance compared with the monolithic MoSi2 and SiC/MoSi2 composite at room temperature.

Mechanical properties of carbon coated $SiC_f/SiC$ composites have been investigated, in conjunction with a detailed analysis of microstructure. Especially, the fracture behavior of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites by the induction of carbon coating layers has been examined. The matrix region of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites with ultra-fine SiC powders were consolidated by a liquid phase sintering (LPS) process, using a sintering additive of $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ powder compound. In this composite, plain and satin- woven Tyranno SA fabrics were also utilized as a reinforcing material. A carbon interfacial layer was coated around satin-woven SiC fabrics. The characterization of LPS-$SiC_f/SiC$ composites was investigated by means of SEM and three point bending test.
SiC and $SiC-Si_3N_4$ powder were synthesized via the carbiding and carbiding-nitriding reaction of Jecheon quartz respectively using graphite as a reducing agent. $\beta$-SiC+($\alpha$+$\beta$)-$Si_3N_4$ composite was obtained by the carbiding-nitriding reaction of Jecheon quartz-graphite mixture at 1, 35$0^{\circ}C$ in $H_2$ atmosphere. $\beta$-SiC+($\alpha$+$\beta$)-$Si_3N_4$ composite was obtained by the carbidint-nitriding reaction of Jecheon quartz-graphite mixture at 1, 35$0^{\circ}C$ in $N_2-H_2$ atmosphere. The ratio of $\beta$-SiC+($\alpha$+$\beta$)-$Si_3N_4$ content in a produced composite could be controlled by adjusting the reaction time and gaseous mixture.

Raman spectra of poly (polycrystalline) 3C-SiC thin films, which were deposited on the oxidized Si substrate by APCVD, have been measured. They were used to study the mechanical characteristics of poly 3C-SiC grown in various temperatures. TO and LO modes of 2.0 m poly 3C-SiC grown at 1180 C occurred at 794.4 and $965.7\;cm^{-1}$. Their FWHMs (full width half maximum) were used to investigate the stress and the disorder of 3C-SiC. The broad FWHM can explain that the crystallinity of 3C-SiC grown at 1180 C becomes poly crystalline instead of the disordered crystal. The ratio of intensity $I_{(LO)}/I_{(TO)}$ 1.0 means that the crystal defect of 3C-SiC/$SiO_2$/Si is small. The biaxial stress of poly 3C-SiC was obtained as 428 MPa. In the interface of 3C-SiC/$SiO_2$, the phonon mode of C-O bonding appeared at $1122.6\;cm^{-1}$. The phonon modes related to D and G bands of C-C bonding were measured at 1355.8 and $1596.8\;cm^{-1}$ respectively.
