  • In this work, nonlinear control of a three-phase shunt active power filter (SAPF) has been studied and compared to classical control based on proportional integral regulator. The control strategy is based on the direct current method using sliding mode control (SMC), where the aim is to regulate the average voltage across the dc bus of the inverter. Details are given for the control algorithm; the controller is comprised of a current loop which utilizes a hysteresis controller to generate the gating signals for the switching devices, and a nonlinear controller based on SMC law which is different from classical laws based on error between reference and measured output voltage of the inverter. Sliding surface applied in this work contains the whole of state variables, in order to ensure full control of the system behavior in the presence of disturbances that affect the supply source, the load parameters or the reference value. The designed controller offers advantage that it can gives the improvement of dynamic and static performances in cases of large disturbances. A comparison of the effects of PI control and SMC on the APF response in steady stat, under line variations, load variations, and different component variations is performed.

  • A protection scheme for hybrid active power filters, which is combined shunt passive filter and small rated series active filter, is presented and analyzed in this paper. The proposed series active power filter operated as a high impedance 'k($\Omega$)' to the fundamental component when over current occurs in the power distribution system, and three control strategies are proposed in this paper. The first is the method by detecting the fundamental source current through the p-q theory, the second is the method by detecting the fundamental component of load current in Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) and the third is the method by detecting the input voltage. When the over current occurs in the power distribution system, the proposed scheme protects the series active power filter without additional protection circuits. The validity of proposed protection scheme is investigated through experimental result for the prototype hybrid active power filter system.

  • LCL filters installed at converter outputs offer a higher harmonic attenuation than L filters. However, as a three order resonant circuit, it is difficult to stabilize and has a risk of oscillating with the power grid. Therefore, careful design is required to damp LCL resonance. Compared to a passive damping method, an active damping method is a more attractive solution for this problem, since it avoids extra power losses. In this paper, the damping capabilities of capacitor current, capacitor voltage, and grid-side current feedback methods, are analyzed under the discrete-time state-space model. Theoretical analysis shows that the grid-side current feedback method is more suitable for use in active power filters, because it can damp LCL resonance more effectively than the other two methods when the ratio of the resonance and the control frequency is between 0.225 and 0.325. Furthermore, since there is no need for extra sensors for additional states measurements, this method provides a cost-efficient solution. To support the theoretical analysis, the proposed method is tested on a 7-kVA single-phase shunt active power filter.

  • A fast-transient repetitive control strategy for a three-phase shunt active power filter is presented in this study to improve dynamic performance without sacrificing steady-state accuracy. The proposed approach requires one-sixth of the fundamental period required by conventional repetitive control methods as the repetitive control time delay in the synchronous reference frames. Therefore, the proposed method allows the system to achieve a fast dynamic response, and the program occupies minimal storage space. A proportional-integral regulator is also added to the current control loop to eliminate arbitrary-order harmonics and ensure system stability under severe harmonic distortion conditions. The design process of the corrector in the fast-transient repetitive controller is also presented in detail. The LCL filter resonance problem is avoided by the appropriately designed corrector, which increases the margin of system stability and maintains the original compensation current tracking accuracy. Finally, experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed strategy.

  • Most buildings and factories are supplied with electric power by three-phase four-wire low voltage electric distribution system. This method pollutes the neutral line and utility sources with harmonic currents. Today, development of power conversion technology and the popularization of computer cause the neutral current to become serious. In this paper, a novel three-phase four-wire active filter is proposed to solve these harmonic problems has two purposes. The first purpose of the proposed active filiter is that the phase current has a sinusoidal waveform shape under the nonlinear load. The second purpose of the proposed active filiter is that the current on the neutral line become zero under the unbalanced power source and under the varring load conditions. The ability of the shunt active filiter has been proved to be excellent through simulations under the varring load conditions.

  • This paper proposes transformerless power conversion system consisting of a single-phase diode rectifier and a shunt hybrid filter for the electric-railway system. The hybrid filter consists of a single tuned LC filter per a phase and a low-rated NPC type multi-level inverter. Compared with conventional active filters. transformers are not used. Also, LC filter works as not only a harmonic filter tuned at the 3rd harmonic frequency but also a switching-ripple filter. The rating of the active filter can be decreased by using a NPC type multi-level inverter. The simulation results confirm the validity of the system.

  • This paper introduces a shunt active power filter with a small DC bus capacitor by adding additional low-pass filter (LPF). The DC link voltage fluctuation is impressively suppressed with a small value in spite of the low value of DC-link capacitor under the steady-state condition. Consequently, the cost and volume of power converter are significantly reduced thanks to the reduced value of DC-bus capacitor. On the other hand, an indirect control strategy is used to maintain grid-side current when non-linear loads are connected to the system. By using proportional-integral (PI) and modified repetitive controller (RC) in dq0 frame, the calculation time is greatly decreased by 6 times compared with the conventional RC, and the number of measurement devices is also minimized. As a result, the acquired total harmonic distortion (THD) is lower than 2% regardless of the load conditions. Simulation results are carried out in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

  • This paper estimates the capacity of shunt type active power filters(APF) for harmonic/reactive power compensation with a thyristor converter load. The base capacity requirement of APF is defined for idealized converter load current waveform and the effect of commutation overlap on the APF capacity is examined. The APF capacity required for reactive power compensation in addition to the harmonic elimination is estimated to give maximum achievable power factor for various operating condition of the partially-loaded thyristor converter. The method of current limit of APF is introduced, and it is shown that the APF capacity can be considerably reduced by deliberately limiting the peak current while maintaining the filtering performance to meet the level std 519 regulation.

  • This paper presents a new compensating system, consisting of series and shunt active filters, for mitigating voltage and current disturbances. The shunt filter is used to compensate for unbalanced and distorted load currents. The series filter comprises two inverters, used to suppress voltage disturbances and handle source currents independently. This configuration is devised to reduce the overall cost of active compensators by using low-frequency high-current switches for the latter inverter. The filters are controlled separately using a novel control strategy. Since voltages at the point of common coupling contain interharmonics, conventional methods cannot be used for extracting voltage references. Therefore, voltage references are obtained from generated sinusoidal waveforms by a phase-locked loop. Current references are detected based on rotating frame vector mapping. Simulation results are presented to verify the system.

  • This paper discusses a simple control approach for a Unified Power Conditioner (UPC) system to achieve power quality compensation at the point of common coupling in distribution systems. The proposed Instantaneous Power Estimation Algorithm (IPEA) for shunt and series active power filters uses a simple mathematical concept that reduces the complexity in the design of the controller. The performance of a UPC is verified with a system subjected to voltage distortions, sags/swells and unbalanced loads using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation study shows that a UPC with the proposed control algorithm can effectively compensate for voltage and current harmonics, unbalance and reactive power. The control algorithm is experimentally implemented using dSPACE DS1104 and its effectiveness has been verified.
