  • A numerical investigation was made to examine characteristics of rectangular pontoon type floating breakwaters in oblique waves. Sway and heave wave exciting forces, roll moment acting on the floating breakwater and three motion reponses decrease as the incident wave angle increases for the most of the wave ranges. There exists a minimum wave transmission coefficient which is a function of wave frequency. In short wave range wave transmission coefficient increases as the incident wave angle increases. In long wave range, however, wave transmission coefficient decreases as the wave incident angle increases.

  • For maintaining adequate psychometric properties when reducing the number of items from an instrument, item level psychometrics is crucial. Strategies such as low item correlation or factor loadings, using classical test theory, have traditionally been advocated. The purpose of this study is to describe the development of a new short form assessing the impact of low back pain on physical activity. Rasch measurement model has been applied to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Activity Measure (ICF-AM). One hundred and one individuals with low back pain aged 19-89 years (mean age: $48.1{\pm}17.3$) who live in the community were participated in the study. Twenty-seven items of lifting/carrying construct of the ICF-AM were analyzed. Ten items were selected from the construct to create a short form. Item elimination criteria include: 1) high or low mean square (out of the range: .6-1.4 for the fit statistics), 2) similar item calibrations to adjacent items, 3) person separation value, and item-person map for potential gap in person ability continuum. All 10 items of the short form fit to the Rasch model except one item (i.e., carrying toddler on back). Despite its high infit and outfit statistics (1.90/2.17), the item had to be reinstated due to potential gaps at the upper extreme of person ability level. The short form had a slightly better spread of person ability continuum compared to the entire set of item. The created short form separated individuals with low back pain into nearly 4 groups, while the entire set of items separated the individuals into 6 groups. The findings prompted multidimensional models for better explanation of the lifting/carrying domain. The item level psychometrics based on the Rasch model can be useful in developing short forms with rationally retained items.

  • The variation of spatter generation in gas metal arc welding with welding conditions and wire compositions was investigated and interpreted in terms of arc stability. The transition range from a short circuit mode to a spray mode in the mixed gas welding showed an unstable arc and generated the largest amount of spatters. Titanium reduced spatters only in the globular mode of $CO_2$welding and silicon and manganese showed the same effect The effect of silicon and manganese, however, was no longer seen when titanium was added simultaneously to the wire. It is believed that deoxidizers easily form oxides on the anode and make the arc stable even in DCRP welding. The wires with deoxidizers also showed low short circuit frequency, resulting in the increase of large size spatters.

  • The domestic 30AFs that are currently being produced show many problems due to different instantaneous trip characteristics in case of short-circuit. The troubles may cause explosion by excessive short-circuit capacities and arc emission, which results in a wide range of blackout. The function and safety of the low voltage circuit breakers installed before the end load are very important. This paper presents an idea on the safety improvement of the low voltage circuit-breakers through the analysis of instantaneous trip characteristics of domestic 30AF circuit-breakers.

  • A transient short-hot-wire technique has been presented for simultaneous measurements of the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of fluids under the microgravity condition. Two-dimensional heat conduction equations for concentric cylinders with various radius ration and length-diameter ratio have been solved numerically by taking account of the heat capacity of the inner cylinder. A unique relation between the non-dimensional temperature of inner cylinder and Fourier number is obtained for a wide range of thermal properties of the fluids, because the relation if found to be almost independent of these properties. Then the characteristic could be utilized as a masterplot to evaluate both the thermal conductivity and diffusivity. In principle, this method is proved to have an error within 1% for both of these properties.

  • The measurements of X-ray and Gamma-ray Dose Rate have been successfully made by measuring the short circuit current of the Silicon P-N Junction Diode being irradiated. The short circuit current flows when a silicon P-N Junction Diode is irradiated by X-ray of Gammaray radiations due to photovoltaic effect. A brief analysis is given in order to verify the proportionality of a short circuit current to the Dose Rate. Using this method, measurements of X-ray Dose Rate were carried out in the range of 0.05-1600 r/m successfully. The calibration was made by comparing with Victoreen condenser r-meter. Some advantages in this Dose Rate meter over a condenser r-meter were found. One can measure a continous variation of X-ray Dose Rate with this rate meter at the control console of X-ray device.

  • The spatter generation rate of GMA welding with $CO_2$ gas shielding was measured with the change of welding conditions such as wire feeding rate and welding voltage and then the results were analized with the accompanying changes in metal transfer mode and in bead geometry. The spatter generation rate (SGR) was relatively low not only wit the short circuit transfer but with the truely globular transfer mode. However, the SGR resulted with the mixed mode were consistantly high. The resultant wave pattern of mixed mode was due to the coexistance of short-circuit and globular transfer and characterized by the frequent appearance of instantaneous short circuit. Considering the result of SGR and that of bead geometry, it could be concluded that when the wire feeding rate (or welding current) was either low or high, the optimum bead shape could be obtained along with the low spatter generation. However, in the middle range of wire feeding rate, the optimum bead shape was only obtained in the mixed mode condition resulting in the high spatter generation.

It has to be studied, the control method of products that correspond to multi-functionalization and reduced product life which is caused by high-quality and varied customers demands. As a process control method, we most be able not only to control varies characteristic in a control at once but also to detected special values quickly for high-quality. In this paper a control method referred above is presented.

  • The fatigue crack growth behavior of physically-short cracks(0.2${\Delta}K$ with $da/dN<1{\times}10^{-7}m/cycle$. The transition crack lengths where similtude with ${\Delta}K$ existed was between 1 and 2mm. The effective stress intensity factor range based on COD measurements gave better correlation between the physically-short and long cracks. Thus it can be considered that the crack closure effect is one of the main factors which causes the differences between these two cracks.

  • Electrically-short wire antennas, widely used for mobile communications and EMI measurements, have low rediation efficiency and gain due to the ohmic loss predominant over the radiation power. A very short dipole antenna for wideband EMI measurements has been analyzed using the Method of Moments with the incorporatio of the ohmic loss calculated by the Phenomenological Loss Equivalennce Method(PEM). The calculated results show the rediation gain and efficiency very with the ohmic loss in a wide range of frequencies. Thses results can be effectively used for optimum design of very small antennas and probes for mobile communications and non-disturbing EMI measurements.
