  • Four varieties of perilla(Perilla ocimoids L.) were tested to investigate the ecological adaptation of the crop to variations in sowing time extending from April 25 to July 25 with an interval of 30 days between each of the four sowing. As sowing time was delayed, the plant height, the number of first branches and cluster, the weight of fresh and dried stems, the day to germination and flowering decreased, showing a highly negative correlation between the showing dates and these characteristics, but a highly positive correlation between days to flowering and the required accumulated temperature. With early sowing under low temperature and long day conditions, it took about 132 days from sowing to flowering due to the long period of vegetative growth, but as sowing was delayed, the days to flowering decreased with a minimum period of 57 days. The yield of seeds in each case varied with each variety. Type A(Nonsan var.) and type B(Jinchon var.) had higher yields when sowed earlier. But type C(Namyang var. and Wooljin var.) had its highest yield in the plot sowed on May 25 and the 1000 grain weight showed a tendency to increase as sowing was delayed. In conclusion, the perilla was preyed to be a short-day plant that flowers from the begining to the middle of Sep. regardless of sowing time, so that the sowing time should be decided after due consideration of the length of the vegetative growth periods of the varieties.

  • To understand flowering response under diverse day-length condition and the movement of floral stimulus, we used six perilla accessions which showed diverse days to flowering. Though the growth phase was reported as irreversible between vegetative and reproductive stage, perilla showed reversible growth phase according to day length increase in May and June. When it sowed in March, flowering response was started in early May and vegetative and reproductive phase was coexisted in late June. When a part of a perilla plant was treated under short day condition, only apical buds on main stem or branches were flowered but other long day conditioned apical buds were not flowered. With this result it is suggested that the floral stimulus can not be transferred to other part of perilla.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the responses to photoperiod of some Korean rice cultivars at four levels of the day length, 10, 12, 14 and 16 hours. Generally the days to heading were reduced in the short day length. Japonica varieties seemed to have shorter basic vegetative growth phase and, were more sensitive to day length, while Japonica crossed Indica varieties showed longer basic vegetative growth phase and, were less sensitive to day length. All tested varieties could be classified into 19 ecotypes based on the periods of the basic vegetative growth phase and the sensitivity to day length.

  • Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa ssp. pekinesis) is one of the most important vegetable crops in korea and other East Asian countries. Cytosolic fructose-1,6-bisphospha-tase (cytFBPase) is a key enzyme in sucrose biosyn-thesis, which controls the sucrose levels as well as the productivity at plants. The Chinese cabbage cytFBPase gene, BrFBPase, encodes the 340 amino acid polypep-tide, giving a theoretical molecular weight of 37.2 kD and a isolectric point of 5.4. BrFBPase showed high sequence identity with Brassica homologs and its functional domains, such as 12,6P$_2$ binding site or active site and F6P binding site, were highly conserved in diverse sources of organisms. Although the genome of Chinese cabbage seemed to be triplicated, BrFBPase appears to be a single copy gene. The expression of BrFBPase was examined at transcript and protein levels under various conditions. BrFBPase expression was observed only in photosynthetic source tissue, not in sink tissue. The expression was slightly higher during the day than at night, and it showed a diurnal cycle with circadian rhythmicity. Short-term exposure to low temperature inhibited the expression of the BrFBPase, while long-term exposure increased the expression, supporting that sugar levels are high in late autumn when temperature are low.

  • Rice is a facultative short-day (SD) plant in which flowering is induced under SD conditions or by other environmental factors and internal genetic programs. Overexpression of Histone Deacetylase 701 (HDT701) accelerates flowering in hybrid rice. In this study, mutants defective in HDT701 flowered late under both SD and long-day conditions. Expression levels of florigens Heading date 3a (Hd3a) and Rice Flowering Locus T1 (RFT1), and their immediate upstream floral activator Early heading date 1 (Ehd1), were significantly decreased in the hdt701 mutants, indicating that HDT701 functions upstream of Ehd1 in controlling flowering time. Transcript levels of OsINDETERMINATE SPIKELET 1 (OsIDS1), an upstream repressor of Ehd1, were significantly increased in the mutants while those of OsGI and Hd1 were reduced. Chromatin-immunoprecipitation assays revealed that HDT701 directly binds to the promoter region of OsIDS1. These results suggest that HDT701 induces flowering by suppressing OsIDS1.

  • Changing environmental conditions can affect plant growth by influencing water and nutrient transport and photosynthesis. Plant physiological responses under changing environmental conditions can be non-destructively monitored using electrodes as plant induced electrical signal (PIES). Objective of the study was to monitor PIES in response to increased CO2 and decreased photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). The PIES increased during day time when transpiration and photosynthesis occurs and monitored CO2 concentration was negatively correlated to the PIES. Enhanced CO2 concentration slightly reduced PIES, but the effect of increased CO2 was limited by light intensity. The effect of reduced PPFD was not appeared immediately because water and nutrient transport was not promptly affected by the light. The study was conducted to evaluate short-term effect of increasing CO2 and decreasing PPFD, hence proline content and chlorophyll fluorescence was not significantly affected by the conditions.

  • Chrysanthemum production would benefit from crop growth simulations, which would support decision-making in crop management. Chrysanthemum is a typical short day plant of which floral initiation and development is sensitive to photoperiod. We developed a model to predict phenological development and leaf appearance of chrysanthemum (cv. Baekseon) using daylength (including civil twilight period), air temperature, and management options like light interruption and ethylene treatment as predictor variables. Chrysanthemum development stage (DVS) was divided into juvenile (DVS=1.0), juvenile to budding (DVS=1.33), and budding to flowering (DVS=2.0) phases for which different strategies and variables were used to predict the development toward the end of each phenophase. The juvenile phase was assumed to be completed at a certain leaf number which was estimated as 15.5 and increased by ethylene application to the mother plant before cutting and the transplanted plant after cutting. After juvenile phase, development rate (DVR) before budding and flowering were calculated from temperature and day length response functions, and budding and flowering were completed when the integrated DVR reached 1.33 and 2.0, respectively. In addition the model assumed that leaf appearance terminates just before budding. This model predicted budding date, flowering date, and leaf appearance with acceptable accuracy and precision not only for the calibration data set but also for the validation data set which are independent of the calibration data set.

  • For the constitution of forage cropping system including the double-cropping of corn, attention has been directed towards the early and short maturing varieties of corn such as Comet 80, Comet 85 and Linda as a component forage crop of forage cropping system. Four corn varieties, Comet 80, Comet 85, Linda and Suwon 19 were planted delayedly by each of 45, 55 and 65 days from the recommended sowing date of suwon 19. Under these condition, growth characteristics and late-sowing adaptability of 4 corn varieties were investigated, and the results are summarized as follows; 1. The variety of suwon 19 did not reach the stage of silking in the occasion of late sowing by 50 days from the optimum sowing time for mono cropping of suwon 19. However early varieties such as Comet 80, Comet 85 and Linda silked under the condition of 65 days-delayed sowing from the recommended sowing time of Suwon 19 for mono-cropping. 2. Early varieties of Comet 80, Comet 85 and Linda were so grown by approximately 92% in plant height, 66% in ear height, 88% in stem diameter and 81% in leaf number respectively compared to Suwon 19 at each of three delayed sowing time that exhibited the dwarfish appearance of canopy. 3. Days from sowing to silking decreased as the sowing time was delayed and the average days from sowing to silking in the sowing treatments of 55 days-delayed of Suwon 19, Comet 80, Comet 85 and Linda were 61, 46, 47 and 51 days, respectively. 4. The size of variations of plant height and ear height influenced by delayed-sowing time was comparatively larger in the varieties of Suwon 19 and Linda than in those of Comet 80 and Comet 85. 5. As sowing time was delayed from the optimum sowing time of Suwon 19 for mono-cropping, ear content decreased from 0% of Suwon 19 at 55 day-delayed sowing treatment to 3540% of Comet 80 and Comet 85 at 65 days-delayed sowing treatment.
