Young's modulus of composite has been predicted by Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method modified with Mori-Tanaka's mean field theory, where short fibers of aspect ratio distribution are assumed to be aligned. Young's modulus of the composite is predicted with the smallest class interval for simulating the actual distribution of fiber aspect ratio, which is compared with that computed using different class intervals. Young's modulus of the composite predicted with mean aspect ratio or the largest class interval is overestimated by the maximum 10%. As the class interval of short fibers for predicting Young's modulus decreases, the predicted results show good agreements with those obtained using the actual distribution of fiber aspect ratio. It can be finally concluded from the study that if and only if the class interval of short fiber normalized by the maximum aspect ratio is smaller than 0.1, the predicted results are consistent with those obtained using the actual distribution of aspect ratio.
The puncture properties of short-fiber reinforced rubber were investigated as functions of fiber aspect ratio(AR: length of fiber/diameter of fiber), fiber content, specimen size and testing velocity. The puncture stresses of the matrix and short-fiber reinforced rubber decreased with specimen size, and increased with testing velocity at same specimen size. As the fiber AR increased the puncture stress at given fiber content also increased. The problem of the specimen shape was investigated by the comparison of the tensile strength with puncture stress. The forces acting in the membrane wall of the matrix and the short-fiber reinforced rubber showed a similar data regardless of specimen size. And those increased with testing velocity at same specimen size. As the fiber AR increased the force acting in the wall at given fiber content also increased. Overall, it was found that the specimen size, testing velocity had an important effects on the puncture properties.
The tensile properties of short nylon6 fiber reinforced NR and SBR have been investigated as functions of fiber aspect ratio(AR), diameter ratio(DR), interphase condition, and fiber content. The tensile strength increased with increasing fiber AR(20 min.) and good interphase conditions. The short-fiber(DR=3 and AR=20 min.) reinforced SBR did not show the dilution effect for all interrhase conditions. And the short-fiber(DR=3 and AR=20min.) reinforced NR did not show the dilution effect except for the no-coating. The tensile moduli were significantly improved due to fiber AR. fiber content, and good interphase at same DR. The better interphase condition showed the higher pull-out force at same DR. Also, the stress analysis near the fiber end carried out using axisymmetric FEA to be convinced of the reinforcing mechanism. It is found that the fiber AR, interphase and DR have an important effect on tensile properties.

In order to analyze the stress distribution and stress concentration factors in composite materials, especially, in the short fiber of the reinforced composite materials by photoelastic method, it is necessary to develop the photoelastic model material having short fibers with arbitrary size and orientation. In this paper, the orthotropic photoelastic model material having short fibers for the transparent type photoelastic device was developed by the embedded corrosion fiber method. It was found that the model material was satisfactory to the properties of photoelastic model material, and also that the embedded corrosion fiber method can be employed for developing a model material with arbitrary size and direction to analyze the stress distribution and crack problems of composite materials.

This study presents a mathematical model predicting the stress-strain behavior of fiber reinforced (FMMCs) and fiber/particle reinforced metal matrix composites (F/P MMCs). MMCs were fabricated by squeeze casting method using Al2O3 short fiber and particle as reinforcement, and A356 aluminum alloy as matrix. The fiber/particle ratios of F/P MMCs were 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 with the total reinforcement volume fraction of 20 vol.%, and the FMMCs were reinforced with 10 vol,%, 15 vol. %, 20 vol. % of fibers. Tensile tests were conducted and compared with predictions which were derived using laminate analogy theory and multi-failure model of reinforcements. Results show that the tensile strength of FMMCs with 10 vol.% of fiber was well matched with prediction, and as the fiber volume increases, predictions become larger than experimental results. The difference between the prediction and experiment is considered to be a result of matrix allowance of fiber damage in tensile loading. As the fiber volume fraction in FMMCs increases, the fiber damage increases and so that the tensile strength is reduced. The strength of F/P MMCs approaches more closely to the prediction than FMMCs reinforced with 20 vol.% of fibers because F/P MMCs contains small quantity of fibers and thus has a positive effect in fiber strengthening.
In order to investigate the effect of the ceramic reinforcements on the wear properties of aluminum bronze composites, Cu-8wt%Al aluminum bronze alloys reinforced with the Saffil alumina short fiber were produced by the powder metallurgical method and tested by a pin-ondisc wear testing machine. The wear surfaces of the pin specimens and discs, wear debris, and the cross sections of the wear specimens were observed by SEM. The wear mechanism according to various wear conditions and the change of microstructure in the composites were also discussed. In the results, the reinforcement of the composites with alumina short fiber was very effective at the higher applied load over 10N. The material transportation to the counter disc was observed in the alloy specimens without reinforcements. However, the composites reinforced with ceramic particles and fibers showed the resistance against the material transportation.

In this paper, we developed a theoretical model which is able to predict the tensile strength and elastic modulus of hybrid composites reinforced by two types of randomly distributed discontinuous reinforcements. For this, we considered two known models; One is a prediction model based on the assumption that the composite is reinforced by two types of well aligned continuous reinforcements. The other is a statistical model for the composite which is reinforced by only one type of randomly distributed discontinuous reinforcements. In order to evaluate the validity of accuracy of our prediction model, we measured the strength and elastic modulus of polypropylene hybrid composite reinforced by talc and short glass fiber. We found that the present model drastically enhances the accuracy of strength prediction compared to an existing model, and predicts the elastic modulus within the same order with experimentally measured values.

Drop weight impact tests were performed to investigate the impact behavior of carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates reinforced by short fibers and other interleaving materials. Characterization techniques, such as cross-sectional fractography and scanning acoustic microscopy, were employed quantitatively to assess the internal damage of some composite laminates. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe impact damage and fracture modes on specimen fracture surfaces. The results show that composite laminates experience various types of fracture; delamination, intra-ply cracking, matrix cracking and fiber breakage depending on the interlayer materials. Among the composite laminates tested in this study, the composites reinforced by Zylon fibers showed very good impact damage resistance with medium level of damage, while the composites interleaved by poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEEA) film is expected to deteriorate the bulk strength due to the reduction of fiber volume fraction, even though the damaged area is significantly reduced.
In the present investigation the experimental and theoretical flexural and compressive behavior of short tubular steel columns filled with plain concrete and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) was examined. For a given length of the members, the effects of different geometry and dimensions of the transverse cross-section (square and circular) were investigated. Constituent materials were characterized through direct tensile tests on steel coupons and through compressive and split tension tests on concrete cylinders. Load-axial shortening and load-deflection curves were recorded for unfilled and composite members. Finally, simplified expressions for the calculus of the load-deflection curves based on the cross-section analysis were given and the ultimate load of short columns was predicted.

Recently, large efforts have been made to develop and understand the behavior of Fiber Reinforced Concrete. As in the static loading cases, many researches have been done. However, a few studies have been conducted in cyclic behaviors of FRC. The main objective of the present work is to investigate the cyclic behavior of fiber reinforced concrete with theoretical method. First, cyclic constitutive relations which describe the crack bridging stress considering non-uniform interfacial bond degradation in short randomly oriented fiber reinforced matrix composites under uniaxial cyclic tension were considered. A cyclic degradation model of single fiber based on micromechanics also taken into consideration. As an example, fatigue analysis for ECC with PVA fiber was conducted using proposed equations. Results shows that proposed method can establish a basis for analyzing cyclic behavior of fiber reinforced composites.
