  • To implement full automation in pipe welding, it si most important to develop special sensors and their related systems which act like human operator when detecting irregular groove conditions. In this study, an automatic pipe Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) system was proposed to full control pipe welding procedure with intelligent sensor systems. A five-axes manipulator was proposed for welding torch to automatically access to exact welding position when pipe size and welding angle were given. Pool status and torch position were measured by using a weld-pool image monitoring and processing technique in root-pass welding for weld seam tracking and weld pool control. To overcome the intensive arc light, pool image was captured at the instance of short circuit of welding power loop. Captured image was processed to determine weld pool shape. For weld seam tracking, the relative distance of a torch position from the pool center was calculated in the extracted pool shape to move torch just onto the groove center. To control penetration of root pas, gap was calculated in the extracted pool image, and then weld conditions were controlled for obtaining appropriate penetration. welding speed was determined with a fuzzy logic, and welding current and voltage were determined from a data base to correspond to the gap. For automatic fill-pass welding, the function of human operator of real time weld seam control can be substituted by a sensor system. In this study, an arc sensor system was proposed based on a fuzzy control logic. Using the proposed automatic system, root-pass welding of pipe which had gap variation was assured to be appropriately controlled in welding conditions and in torch position by showing sound welding result and good seam tracking capability. Fill-pass welding by the proposed system also showed very successful result by tracking along the offset welding line without any control of human operator.

  • We measure solar currents transformed from quantum efficiency as a function of incident angles of solar lights. According to conventional models for solar cells, solar currents can be induced when electrons are separated into electrons and holes in the presence of incident solar lights. On the contrary, solar currents can be possible at the time when pinned charge density waves go beyond the pinning potential barrier under the influence of incident solar beams suggested by some authors. In this experiment, measured solar currents and our theory are in good correspondence to confirm the angle dependence of solar lights.

  • During the winter season, when the weather gets colder every year, electricity consumption increases rapidly. The occurrence of fires is increasing due to a short circuit in electrical facilities of buildings such as markets, bathrooms, and apartments with high population density while using a lot of electricity. The cause of these short circuit fires is mostly due to the aging of the wires, the usage increases, and the excessive load cannot be endured, and the wire sheath is melted and caused by nearby ignition materials. In this paper, the load and overheat generated in the electric wire are measured through a complex sensor composed of an overload sensor, a VoC sensor, and an overheat sensor. Based on this, big data analysis is carried out to develop a platform capable of predicting, alerting, and blocking electric fires in real time, and a simulator capable of simulated fire experiments.

  • Secondary batteries used in electric vehicles have a potential risk of ignition and explosion. Various safety measures are being taken to prevent these risks. A numerical study was performed using a computational fluid dynamics code on the cases where pressure relief vents that can reduce the blast overpressures of batteries were installed in the through-compression test room, short-circuit drop test room, combustion test room, and immersion test room in facilities rleated to battery used in electric vehicles. This study was conducted using the weight of TNT equivalent to the energy release from the battery, where the the thermal runaway energy was set to 324,000 kJ for the capacity of the lithium-ion battery was 90 kWh and the state of charge (SOC) of the battery of 100%. The explosion energy of TNT (△HTNT) generally has a range of 4,437 to 4,765 kJ/kg, and a value of 4,500 kJ/kg was thus used in this study. The dimensionless explosion efficiency coefficient was defined as 15% assuming the most unfavorable condition, and the TNT equivalent mass was calculated to be 11 kg. The internal explosion generated in a test room shows the very complex propagation behavior of blast waves. The shock wave generated after the explosion creates reflected shock waves on all inner surfaces. If the internally reflected shock waves are not effectively released to the outside, the overpressures inside are increased or maintained due to the continuous reflection and superposition from the inside for a long time. Blast simulations for internal explosion targeting four test rooms with pressure relief vents installed were herein conducted. It was found that that the maximum blast overpressure of 34.69 bar occurred on the rear wall of the immersion test room, and the smallest blast overpressure was calculated to be 3.58 bar on the side wall of the short-circuit drop test room.

  • Coated conductor(CC) is recently in actively progress for the research and development, and its can be used various stabilizer lot the specific requirements for each application. Among various superconducting applications, coated conductor applied to superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLS) bypasses fault current to its stabilizer, where the surge is abruptly reduced ; thus, stainless steel, which has large resistivity can be a suitable stabilizer for SFCLS. Despite high n-value of the YBCO, CC stabilized with stainless steel did not effectively limit the first peak fault current. In the short circuit test results of AMSC's 344S, a half period delay was observed between the fault and the generation of resistance(60Hz). In this paper, we performed short-circuit experiments with stacked and unstacked CC and compared the test results to analyze effective fault current limiting characteristics. we compared time of the generated resistance as the fault current limiting characteristics and made the samples one is the stacked CC and the other is unstacked CC. These samples were used equal numbers of pieces of CC. In addition, comparison and analysis was made for the stacked structure by measuring fault current limiting characteristics with respect to thermal insulation by impregnating with epoxy resin.

  • In order to reduce the manufacturing cost of MCU chips used in applications such as wireless chargers and USB-C, compared to DP-EEPROM (Double Poly EEPROM), which requires 3 to 5 additional process masks, it is even more necessary MTP(Multi-Time Programmable), which is less than one additional mask and have smaller unit cell size. In addition, in order to improve endurance characteristics and data retention characteristics of the MTP memory cell due to E/P(Erase / Program) cycling, the distribution of the VTP(Program Threshold Voltage) and the VTE(Erase Threshold Voltage) needs to be narrow. In this paper, we proposed a current-type BL S/A(Bit-Line Sense Amplifier) circuit, WM(Write Mask) circuit, BLD(BL Driver) circuit and a algorithm, which can reduce the distribution of program and VT and erase VT, through compare the target current by performing the erase and program pulse of the short pulse several times, and if the current specification is satisfied, the program or erase operation is no longer performed. It was confirmed that the 256Kb MTP memory fabricated in the Magnachip semiconductor 0.13㎛ process operates well on the wafer in accordance with the operation mode.

  • HT-PEMFC (high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell) using PA (phosphoric acid) doped PBI (polybenzimidazole) membrane has been researched for extending the lifetime. However, the existing work on durability of HT-PEMFC focuses on identifying degradation causes of lab scale. The short life time of HT-PEMFC is still the problem for its commercialization. In this paper, an operating method to maximize life time of 5kW HT-PEMFC stack are proposed. The proposed method includes major steps such as minimization of OCV (Open Circuit Voltage) exposure, control of the proper stack temperature, and N2 purging for the stack. This long life operating method was based on the fragmentary results of degradation from previous research works. Experimentally, the 5 kW homemade HT-PEMFC stack was operated for a long time based on the proposed method and the stack successfully can operate within the desired degradation rate for the target life time.

  • This study presents the characteristics of short circuits (SCs) caused by excessive currents in high-voltage cables used in electric vehicles and emphasizes the need to calculate the cross-sectional areas of these cables according to the SC current. Three direct current power supplies were connected in parallel to test the SC characteristics caused by excessive currents, and a timer and a magnetic contactor were used to deliver the conduction time and SC current. A circular infrared-radiation heater was used to test the temperature-dependent SC characteristics, a thermocouple was used to measure the temperature, and a shunt resistor was used to measure the current. As the SC current increased, the fusing time of the cable decreased. Additionally, a high-voltage cable (with an area of 16 mm2 ) used in electric vehicles fused when a current (approximately equal to 55 times the allowable current) flowed for 0.2 s (operating time of the protective device). When the SC current is 10 kA, the cable may fuse during the operating time of the protective device, thus creating a fire hazard. In electric vehicles, the size of the SC current increases in proportion to the capacity of the battery. Thus, the cross-sectional areas of the cables used should be calculated accordingly, and cable operations should be properly coordinated with the surrounding protective devices.

  • In this paper a new zero current transition pulse width modulation (ZCT-PWM) buck converter is proposed to combine the desirable feature of both the conventional buck converter and resonant converters. In this proposed scheme an auxiliary circuit is added to the conventional buck converter and used to achieve soft-switching for both the main switch and the freewheeling diode while not incurring any additional losses due to auxiliary circuit And this converter operates exactly like the conventional PWM converter except for a short particular time interval. The operation of the proposed converter is explained and analyzed. and design guidelines are presented. To validate the feasibility of the proposed converter, a 100KHz 180-W prototype is built and tested.

  • A novel solving technique has been developed to analyze the dynamic characteristics of high speed Thomson-coil arc eliminator. The electromagnetic repulsion actuator based on Thomson-coil is taken as the driving part of the arc eliminator, due to which, the opening and closing time is quite short compare to other type actuators. The electromagnetic repulsion actuator is composed of one repulsion plate and two fixed coils, corresponding to the opening coil and closing coil, respectively. The new solving technique is derived based on the equivalent electric circuit model of the system which is set up by dividing the repulsion plate into multi segments using adaptive segmentation method. This solving technique is applied to the dynamic characteristic analysis of electromagnetic repulsion actuators in high speed Thomson-coil arc eliminators. The calculation results are testified by the FEM calculation results and experiment results.
