This study grasped long-term changing tendency of shoreline during lately about 30 years in five region of South East coast, and analyzed long-term changing tendency of East coast shoreline and the factors that synthesized studies of Central and South East coast. As a result of calculating of shoreline variations using DSAS, each shoreline of Mangyangjeong and Josa region regressed mean 28.9m and 6.4m, but each shoreline of Goraebul, Daejin and Bonggil region progressed mean 25.0m, 10.6m and 18.8m. Synthesizing changing tendency of East coast shoreline, 1) progressive and regressive zones of shoreline in all regions seem to repeat. 2) looking at shoreline of south zone adjacent to lately constructed or extended breakwater progressed, because it is thought due to effect of a longshore current flowing north. 3) zones using beach relatively tends to regress shorelines. 4) progress and regress of shoreline in zones including estuary of stream are various features as change of deposit supply from a upstream region.

Monitoring the location of the shoreline and foreshore changes through the time and core tasks are carried out by coastal engineers for a wide range of research. With the advent of digital imaging technology, the shore-based video monitoring system provides many advantages than field surveys. This study presents the development and construction(installation) of video monitoring system to assist the study of coastal and shoreline dynamics and evolution, especially sandbar variation at the Nakdong river estuary. For the purpose of this study, at high building near the Dadea-po beach (St. 2) and Jinudo(island) (St. 1) foreshore region, where coastline variation is highly active, 5 video cameras installed; the coastline movement has monitored since Aug. 2007 using the systems. From the image results of video camera, the 'Spit' type sandbar appears at the foreshore region of Doyodeung and Dadea-po beach and measured the deposition process of Jinudo(island) foreshore region. As a result, the monitoring system using video-based technique built in this study would be able to identify changes in the area and width of shoreline and beach of Nakdong river estuary.
The numerical modeling and comparison with observations are performed to find out the detailed structure of meteorology and the characteristic of related dispersion phenomena of the non-reactive air pollutant at Kyoungin region, South Korea, where several industrial complex including Siwha, Banwol and Namdong is located. MM5 (Fifth Generation NCAR/Penn State Mesoscale Model), 3-D Land/sea breeze model and 3-D diagnostic meteorological model have been utilized for the meteorological simulation for September, 2002 with each different spatial resolution, while 3-D Eulerian air dispersion model for the air quality study. We can see the simulated wind field shows the very local circulation quitely well compared with in-site observations in shoreline area with complex terrains, at which the circulation of Land/sea breeze has developed and merged with the mountain and valley breeze eventually. Also it is shown in the result of the dispersion model that the diurnal variation and absolute value of daily mean $SO_2$ concentrations have good agreement with observations, even though the instant concentration of $SO_2$ simulated overestimates around 1.5 times rather than that of observation due to neglecting the deposition process and roughly estimated emission rate. This results may indicate that it is important for the air quality study at shoreline region with the complex terrain to implement the high resolution meteorological model which is able to handle with the complicate local circulation.

The tendency of erosion and accretion of the coast has occurred by the wanton development of a shore so that establishing the plans of nature preservation and development according to shoreline change is in demand. In this study, six DGPS positioning are executed in the periodic interval of about 2 months to choose coastal area of Gangnung, Gangwon-do and the observation data which is post-processed about 50cm accuracies on the Gangnung regular service is compared with digital map in 1998 and digital chart in 2006. Comparing DGPS values with shoreline of digital map, we know that erosion has occurred locally around training dike placed in Gangmun harbor and in southern Namhangjin, many accretions has happened near the breakwater of Namhangjin region and partial accretion is occurring in the other area. Therefore DGPS which is an acquisition method suitable for GIS data input is in use to collect the horizontal data and it could be used effectively to measure the shoreline change of time series through the long-term continuous observation by the coastal development.
This research is to observe the shoreline changes in Jinha beach over the 50 years with aerial photographs and satellite images. The shoreline image feature was retrieved from the corrected images using wet and dry techniques and analyzed by DSAS from the statistical point of view. From 1967 to 1992, the mouth of Hoeya River was severely blocked and the northern shoreline off Jinha beach was eroded. The blockade of river mouth seemed to have been eased along with the completion of the dike, but soil continued to be deposited along the high sea away from the river month. Compared to the past, a layer of sediment has been formed off the northern coastline while the southern coastline has eroded. At least in the region subject to this research, the construction of a training dike is to blame. On top of that, a mere combination of dredges and artificial nourishment is not enough to take under control the changing shorelines properly. Thus, it is necessary to devise a more fundamental solution by taking into account reasons behind sediment from the river area that could change the shorelines besides the costal environment.
River terraces of glacial and interglacial periods are most developed in the Ungcheon River, midwestern coastal region of south Korea. Among these terraces, interglacial river terraces correspond to the thalassostatic terraces of eastern coastal region of Korea. Thus the former shoreline altitudes of the coastal region around Ungcheon River can be estimated by using relative heights of these interglacial thalassostatic terraces of Ungcheon River The former shoreline altitudes estimated from interglacial thalassostatic terraces of Ungcheon River are 80m, 50${\sim}$60m, 40${\sim}$45m, 30m, 25m(?), 15${\sim}$20m, and 10m. These estimates are almost identical with those of Quaternary sea levels of eastern coastal region. Among the above estimates of Ungcheon River, the former shoreline altituded of 15~20m and 10m correspond to the ancient sea levels of $\pm$18m and $\pm$10m of eastern coastal region which were injudged as the last interglacial culmination period and late warmer period of the last interglacia(5e and 5a substages of oxygen isotope stage), respectively. Therefore there is a possibility that the rest of the above former shoreline altitudes of the coastal region aroune Jngcheon River also correspond to those of eastern coastal region. On the basis of the above possibility it can be proposed that the eastern and western coastal region of Korean Peninsula have undergone tectonic uplift of equall amount since the middle Quaternary Period.
In order to analysis the variation in vegetation area caused by topographical change at Jinudo in the Nakdong estuary, we used aerial photographs of Jinudo from 1998 to 2006. To extract an accuracy shoreline from these aerial photographs, a tide calibration was performed. We also estimated the annual variation in topographic area and vegetation area, and then analyzed the relationship between them by a correlation analysis. The following results were obtained: 1) The calibrated shoreline distance of Jinudo from 1998 to 2006 was estimated to have a range of (-)1,927 cm to (+)4,671 cm. 2) Annual changes in the topographic area and vegetation area in Jinudo have been increasing gradually from 1998, and the correlation coefficient between topographic area and vegetation area is 0.97. 3) The estimated topographic areas were with following order: southern (III), eastern (IV), northern (II) and western (I), while for the vegetation area, the order was southern (III), northern (II), eastern (IV) and western (I). 4) The vegetation area of the southern region (III) of Jinudo had the largest size among the regions, and was calculated to be $4.3{\sim}5.4$ times larger than the eastern region (IV).
The reservoir shores seem to be vulnerable to biological invasion. The purpose of this research was to find out the floristic composition of alien plants and their relationship between environmental factors on reservoir shorelines in Korea. We investigated flora of alien plants and environmental factors of geomorphology, hydrology, water quality and soil on the shoreline of a total of 35 reservoirs with different water level managements. There were 56 species of alien plants, which was 15% of the total plant species identified in the study of reservoirs. A total of 57% of these alien species were the species which were introduced shortly after opening the port from 1876 to 1921 in Korea. More than 80% of the alien plants on the reservoir shores originated from America and Europe. The current distribution of Ambrosia trifida and Paspalum distichum were restricted in the central part and the southern region of the Korean Peninsula, respectively. The water level fluctuation, flood frequency at the median water level, water pollution index, coverage of rock exposure and mean degree of shoreline slope were determined as important environmental factors that have an effect on the characteristics of shoreline alien flora. Our results suggest that the reservoir shore was in danger of being invaded by alien plants due to the water level management and other human disturbances. For effective conservation of the reservoir ecosystem, periodic monitoring systems are required for the early detection of alien species on the reservoir shore.
The build-up of the heat field in shallow coastal water due to a point source has been investigated using an analytical solution of a time-integral form derived by extending the solutions by Holley(1969) and also presented in Harleman (1971). The uniform water depth is assumed with non-isotropic turbulent dispersion. The alongshore-flow is assumed to be uni-directional, spatially uniform and oscillatory. Due to the presence of the oscillatory alongshore-flow, the heat build-up occurs in an oscillatory manner, and the excess temperature thereby fluctuates in that course and even in the quasi-steady state. A series of calculations reveal that proper choices of the decay coefficient as well as dispersion coefficients are critical to the reliable prediction of the excess temperature field. The dispersion coefficients determine the absolute values of the excess temperature and characterize the shoreline profile, particularly within the tidal excursion distance, while the decay coefficient determines the absolute value of the excess temperature and the convergence rate to that of the quasi-steady state. Within the e-folding time scale $1/k_d$ (where $k_d$ is the heat decay coefficient), heat build-up occurs more than 90% of the quasi-steady state values in a region within a tidal excursion distance (L), while occurs increasingly less the farther we go to the downstream direction (about 80% at 1.25L, and 70% at 1.5L). Calculations with onshore and offshore discharges indicate that thermal spreading in the direction of the shoreline is reduced as the shoreline constraint which controls the lateral mixing is reduced. The importance of collecting long-term records of in situ meteorological conditions and clarifying the definition of the heat loss coefficient is addressed. Interactive use of analytical and numerical modeling is recommended as a desirable way to obtain a reliable estimate of the far-field excess temperature along with extensive field measurements.
This paper deals with grain size analysis, heavy mineral analysis and trace element analysis of the recent sediments of Han River basin between Cheongpyong, Gyeonggi province and Seoul. For each location the samples are taken at river shoreline, river berm and river dune. The size analysis discloses that the mean values range from $-1.37{\phi}$ to $-1.60{\phi}$, sorting values range from 0.25 to 1.84, skewness values range from -0.44 to 0.51 and kurtosis values range from -0.1 to 1.75. Based on the textural parameters, the dune sand can be distinguished from the shoreline-berm sand. The content of heavy minerals of each sample ranges from 0.04 to 4.7%. The principal heavy minerals are ilmenite, magnetite, leucoxene, garnet, amphibole, pyroxene, kyanite, zircon, monazite, tourmaline, epidote, limonite, and minor minerals are apatite, sillimanite, andalusite and olivine. In general, dune sand samples contain more heavy minerals than the samples of shoreline or berm sand. This suggests that the heavy mineral concentration is affected by wind action more than by any other causes. The content of ilmenite and leucoxene decreases, whereas the content of zircon and epidote increases as it approaches the downstream region. The differences result from the variance of geological occurrences. The emission spectrochemical analysis and colorimetry analysis revealed that the content of Ni and V in the heavy minerals of the study area are higher than those of other stream sediments in Korea. On the other hand the content of Cu, Ph, Zn, Mo, W, P, Mn, Cr, Ag and Sn are lower in the study area. It has been observed also that the contents of all the elements except for Bi are higher in this area than the samples of marine sediments of Yellow Sea.
