  • A landing gear absorbs the impact energy during the touchdown and it generally consists of an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber and structural components. It should be designed not only to satisfy the static and fatigue strength requirements but to have the sufficient shock absorbing efficiency. The design loads and shock absorbing performance are to be validated by tests, which is required by MIL Spec and FAR, etc. This paper presents the development procedures from the design requirements to the qualification tests and technical points to be considered, with examples of the helicopter landing gear development.

  • Joining Yittria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) to NiCr metal was fabricated using YSZ/NiCr Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) Interlayer by hot pressing process. Microscopic observations demonstrate that the composition and microstructure of YSZ/NiCr FGM distribute gradually in stepwise way, eliminating the macroscopic ceramic/metal interface such as that in traditional ceramic/metal joint. The thermal characteristics of this YSZ/FGM/NiCr joint were studied by thermal shock testing and therml barrier testing. Thermal shock test was conducted by gas burner rig. Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring was performed to analyze the microfracture behavior during the thermal shock test. It could be confirmed that FGM was the excellent performance of thermal shock/barrier resistance at above $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to estimate the lifetime of commercial passenger vehicles shock absorber using degradation test and data. Method: The degradation factor of shock absorber was determined to be a damping force using FMEA. Degradation test was performed on damping force under real world usage condition and analysed the degradation data. Results: To estimate the lifetime of shock absorber, a degradation model was developed and a numerical example was provided. Conclusion: Evaluation of the lifetime of commercial and military vehicles shock absorber will be possible by using the proposed degradation analysis method.

  • The thermal shock resistance of cement composites with hollow glass microspheres (HGM) is investigated. Cement composites containing various concentrations of HGM are prepared and their properties studied. The density, thermal conductivity, and coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites decrease with increasing HGM concentration. A thermal shock test is performed by cycling between -60 and 50℃. After the thermal shock test, the compressive strength of the cement composite without HGM decreases by 28.4%, whereas the compressive strength of the cement composite with 30 wt% HGM decreases by 5.7%. This confirms that the thermal shock resistance of cement is improved by the incorporation of HGM. This effect is attributed to the reduction of the thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion of the cement composite because of the incorporation of HGM, thereby reducing the occurrence of defects due to external temperature changes.

  • Shock responses of the MIL-S-901D standard floating shock platform("SFSP") subject to underwater explosions(UNDEX) are analyzed by using the LS-DYNA/USA. For the analysis, surrounding fluids as well as the SFSP are included in a 3D FE model to consider the cavitation effects of the UNDEX shock wave. The calculated results are compared with the existing test results and it is confirmed that the analysis results predict accurately the shock behaviors of the SFSP.

  • Shock absorption performances of various rubbers were investigated by using drop impact test. Several types of rubber such as NR, NBR, EPDM, SR and PUR with three respective levels of shore hardness were used for the test. As in the cases, the absorbed impact energies in rubbers were measured under seven different loads against impact energy between 5-80J. The impact absorption efficiencies of the rubbers then were evaluated by means of both single impact energy condition and summation of all impact energy applied condition. As shown in the results, PUR and EPDM have better shock absorption performances than other rubbers. Further analysis was extended to determine a shear modulus of SR through the finite element implementation with Blatz-Ko model. As can be seen, relatively higher level of absorption energy results in a decreasing shear modulus.

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the effects of self-resilience and social support on reality shock among new graduate nurses. Methods: The data was collected using self-reported questionnaires from a convenience sample of 111 new graduate nurses. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistical, independent t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression via the SPSS Window 23.0 program. Results: Among general and work related characteristics, factors that have shown significant differences on reality shock were gender (t=-2.29, p=.024), work unit (t=3.31, p=.023) and whether they are working at unit they desired (t=-5.08, p<.001). Reality shock has shown a negative correlation with self-resilience (r=-.51, p<.001) and social support (r=-.41, p<.001). Factors that affected the reality shock on new graduate nurses were self-resilience (${\beta}=-.43$, p<.001), whether they are working at unit they desired (${\beta}=.35$, p<.001) and their currently work unit (${\beta}=-.17$, p=.028). These factors take into account of 38.0% of overall reality shock. Conclusion: The results suggest that self-resilience, desired unit and current work unit should be considered as factors when developing an intervention to alleviate the reality shock experienced by new graduate nurses.

  • The thermal shock resistance has been investigated and compared in three hot-work tool steels. The resistance to thermal shock is first of all a matter of good toughness and ductility. Therefore, a proper hot-work tool steel should be characterized by high fracture strength and high temperature toughness. In this study, new test method is proposed to measure the thermal shock resistance. New method is basically based on Uddeholm' thermal shock test but some modification has been properly applied. Based on these results, some critical temperature($T_{fractures}$) at which fracture occur can be measured to characterize the thermal resistance of the materials. The specific values of ${\Delta}T$, the temperature difference between holding temperature and $T_{fractures}$, has been successfully used as a measure of the thermal shock resistance in this study, the results showed that the thermal shock method used in this study was properly modified.

  • The present work dealt with the high temperature thermal shock properties of 316 stainless steels, in conjunction with a detailed analysis of their microstructures. In particular, the effects of the thermal shock temperature difference and thermal shock cycle number on the properties of 316 stainless steels were investigated. A thermal shock test for 316 stainless steel was carried out at thermal shock temperature differences from $300^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. The cyclic thermal shock test for the 316 stainless steel was performed at a thermal shock temperature difference of $700^{\circ}C$ up to 100 cycles. The characterization of 316 stainless steels was evaluated using an optical microscope and a three-point bending test. Both the microstructure and flexural strength of 316 stainless steels were affected by the high-temperature thermal shock. The flexural strength of 316 stainless steels gradually increased with an increase in the thermal shock temperature difference, accompanied by a growth in the grain size of the microstructure. However, a thermal shock temperature difference of $800^{\circ}C$ produced a decrease in the flexural strength of the 316 stainless steel because of damage to the material surface. The properties of 316 stainless steels greatly depended on the thermal shock cycle number. In other words, the flexural strength of 316 stainless steels decreased with an increase in the thermal shock cycle number, accompanied by a linear growth in the grain size of the microstructure. In particular, the 316 stainless steel had a flexural strength of about 500 MPa at 100 thermal-shock cycles, which corresponded to about 80% of the strength of the as-received materials.

  • The shock tunnel as a hypersonic ground test facility was designed, constructed and its performance test was conducted to reproduce the high speed flow which the hypersonic propulsion system is encountered. The design points were understood and the conceptual design was completed using the quasi one dimensional operation analysis code. After that, the specific performance and compartment design were completed using CFD simulation as the part analysis. The facility was then constructed according to those design results and the performance test was conducted for various operation conditions. In this paper, we suggested the compartment design method using CFD analysis, construction process and various performance test results in detail.
