The activation of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) can be induced by the changes in environmental pH, but the mechanism of HSF1 activation by acidification is not completely understood. This paper reports that a low pH (pH~6.0) can trigger human HSF1 activation. Considering the involvement of the imidazole group of histidine residues under acid pH stress, an in vitro EMSA experiment, Trp-fluorescence spectroscopy, and protein structural analysis showed that the residue, His83, is the essential for pH-dependent human HSF1-activation. To determine the roles of His83 in the HSF1-mediated stress response affecting the cellular acid resistance, mouse embryo fibroblasts with normal wild-type or mutant mouse HSF1 expression were preconditioned by heating or pH stress. The results suggest that His83 is essential for HSF1 activation or the HSF1-mediated transcription of heat shock proteins, in protecting cells from acid pH stress.

Dynamic Load/unload (L/UL) mechanism is an alternative to the contact start stop (CSS) technology which eliminates stiction and wear failure modes associated with CSS. Other benefits of L/UL include increased areal density due to smooth disk surfaces, thinner overcoats, and lower head flying height Improved shock resistance due to elimination of head slap, and reduced power consumption. Inertia latch mechanism becomes important for mobile disk drives because of non operating shock performance. Various types of latch designs have been introduced in hard disk drives to limit a rotary actuator from sudden uncontrolled motion. In this paper, a single spring inertia latch is introduced for a small form optical disk drive, which uses a rotary actuator for moving an optical pick-up. A new small inertia latch with single spring is designed to ensure both feasible and small size. The shock performance of the new inertia latch is experimentally verified.
The flood wave generated due to dam break is affected by initial depth upstream since it is related with hydraulic characteristics propagating downstream, and flow resistance stress has influence on the celerity, travel distance, and approaching depth of shock wave in implementing numerical simulation. In this study, a shallow water flow model employing SU/PG scheme was developed and verified by analytic solutions; propagation characteristics of dam break according to flow resistance and initial depth were analyzed. When bottom frictional stress was applied, the flow depth was relatively higher while the travel distance of shock wave was shorter. In the case of Coulomb stress, the flow velocity behind the location of dam break became lower compared with other cases, and showed values between no stress and turbulent stress at the reach of shock wave. The value of Froude number obtained by no frictional stress at the discontinuous boundary was the closest to 1.0 regardless of initial depth. The adaption of Coulomb stress gave more appropriate results compared with turbulent stress at low initial depth. However, as the initial depth became increased, the dominance of flow resistance terms was weakened and the opposite result was observed.
Aim of the study: Thermal stress is a central determinant of osseous surgical outcomes. Interestingly, the temperatures measured during endosseous surgeries coincide with the temperatures that elicit the heat shock response of mammalian cells. The heat shock response is a coordinated biochemical response that helps to protect cells from stresses of various forms. Several protective proteins, termed heat shock proteins (hsp) are produced as part of this response. To begin to understand the role of the stress response of osteoblasts during surgical manipulation of bone, the heat shock protein response was evaluated in osteoblastic cells. Materials & methods: With primary cell culture studies and ROS 17/2.8 osteoblastic cells transfected with hsp27 encoding vectors culture studies, the thermal stress response of mammalian osteoblastic cells was evaluated by immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis. Results: Immunocytochemistry indicated that hsp27 was present in unstressed osteoblastic cells, but not fibroblastic cells. Primarily cultured osteoblasts and fibroblasts expressed the major hsp in response to thermal stress, however, the small Mr hsp, hsp27 was shown to be a constitutive product only in osteoblasts. Creation of stable transformed osteoblastic cells expressing abundant hsp27 protein was used to demonstrate that hsp27 confers stress resistance to osteoblastic cells. Conclusions: The demonstrable presence and function of hsp27 in cultured bones and cells implicates this protein as a determinant of osteoblastic cell fate in vivo.

Mechanical and electrical devices in various forms are used in many different fields. These can be exposed to external environmental factors such as shock. Therefore, a shock test machine is commonly used to test these devices and evaluate their shock resistance. In this test, the break-down or permanent deformation and malfunction of inner parts due to a high stress or acceleration can be evaluated. As part of a shock test machine, a velocity generator is needed to create shocks between objects. In this study, a hydraulic velocity generator was conceptually designed and an AMESim model was developed to simulate the velocity under different conditions. Simulation results using this model were compared with the test results from a reduced-size velocity generator, and we designed a velocity generator that fits the target payload and velocity using the simulation results.
We wanted to check The feasibility of substituting the manual ceramic packaging technology with 3D digital technology using cotton pad packaging material was examined. To examine the shock absorption, vibration resistance and compression resistance of 3D packaging material printed out by using TPU material, composite vibration, and packaging compression and drop tests were conducted. As the results of the tests, the 3D packaging material displayed vibration resistance that has been improved by approximately 10~20% based on the damping ratio of the composite vibration test, compression resistance performances that are more than 5 times higher, and shock absorption performance was also improved as the packaged object was not broken in the six-sided drop test. Based on these results, it is determined that it would be possible to secure the reusability of the ceramic packaging materials and simplify packaging techniques, and to present diversity in the packaging materials and packaging technologies.

$Al_2TiO_5$ ceramics were sintered by a solid-state reaction. LAS (${\beta}$-spodumene) and $Fe_2O_3$ were added to the $Al_2TiO_5$ composition for enhancement of sintering behavior such as mechanical strength and thermal shock resistance. The sintered body was much densified by addition of LAS and $Fe_2O_3$ because LAS formed the liquid-phase and $Fe_2O_3$ suppressed the grain growth. We have systematically investigated the sintering characteristics, microstructures, mechanical properties, and thermal shock resistance according to the change of the amount of additive. When the additive of LAS (20 wt%)-$Fe_2O_3$ was added to $Al_2TiO_5$, it confirmed that superior mechanical properties of the fracture strength of over 120 MPa and the thermal shock resistance of over $1,200^{\circ}C$ were achieved.

In this paper, a finite element dynamic simulation study was performed to gain an insight about the blast wall test details for the offshore structures. The simulation was verified using qualitative and quantitative comparisons for different materials. Based on in-depth examination of blast simulation recordings, dynamic behaviors occurred in the blast wall against the explosion are determined. Subsequent simulation results present that the blast wall made of high energy absorbing high manganese steel performs much better in the shock absorption. In this paper, the existing finite element shock analysis using the LS-DYNA program is further extended to study the blast wave response of the corrugated blast wall made of the high manganese steel considering strain rate effects. The numerical results for various parameters are verified by comparing different material models with dynamic effects occurred in the blast wall from the explosive simulation.
