Under foundation shock mats have been used in the current practice in order to reduce/damp vibrations received by buildings through the surrounding environment. Although some investigations have been made on under foundation shock mats performance, their effectiveness in the reduction of railway induced-vibrations has not been fully studied, particularly with the consideration of underneath soil media. In this regard, this research is aimed at investigating performance of shock mat used beneath building foundation for reduction of railway induced-vibrations, taking into account soil-structure interaction. For this purpose, a 2D finite/infinite element model of a building and its surrounding soil media was developed. It includes an elastic soil media, a railway embankment, a shock mat, and the building. The model results were validated using an analytical solution reported in the literature. The performance of shock mats was examined by an extensive parametric analysis on the soil type, bedding modulus of shock mat and dominant excitation frequency. The results obtained indicated that although the shock mat can substantially reduce the building vibrations, its performance is significantly influenced by its underneath soil media. The softer the soil, the lower the shock mat efficiency. Also, as the train excitation frequency increases, a better performance of shock-mats is observed. A simplified model/method was developed for prediction of shock mat effectiveness in reduction of railway-induced vibrations, making use of the results obtained.
The shock performance of hard disk drives has been a serious issue for portable computers and AV application HDD. Focusing on the motion of an actuator, we investigated non-operational shock mechanism and studied several parameters that affect the shock performance by experimental analysis. It was found that there are two important factors fort the actuator to endure high shock revel. One is a shock transmissibility and the other is a beating between the arm blade and the suspension. To generalize the shock transmissibility, the concept of shock response spectrum was introduced. The shock response spectrum of the actuator system was obtained experimentally and compared with that of an analytical single degree of freedom model. It was found that there was a good agreement. The first bending natural frequency of the arm blade was found to be the most important factor for the low shock transmissibility. By applying the shock response spectrum and avoiding the beating, we could design an actuator of high shock performance.
A safety helmet is a personal protective equipment to protect the head from falling and flying objects. A safety helmet has the maximum delivered impact force as shock absorption performance, the lower delivered impact force the better performance, which was not a controlled variety during manufacturing safety helmet. Accordingly there were some difficulties in establishing the standard for improved performance as there was not a clear controllable impact force for improved performance. In this study the shock absorption performance was intended to be found as coefficient of restitution related to impulse. As a research method, a coefficient of restitution during the absorption of shock was calculated using the impulse transferred to pharynx utilizing the safety helmet shock absorption performance testing device based on the theory of momentum and impulse. The estimated impulsive force curve was derived assuming that shock was not absorbed using the measured data. The sample was selected as tested goods of ABS material for safety certification available mainly in the market. As a result of study, the maximum delivered impact force of safety helmet made by a domestic safety certified a company was 735 N, and its coefficient of restitution proved to be 0.64. The smaller coefficient of restitution is, the lower maximum delivered impact force and the higher shock absorption performance. The coefficient of restitution can be used as a performance index of safety helmet.
Various forms of passive shock absorber have developed to supplement performance which is poorer than that of active shock absorber. It is called 'Hybrid Conventional Damper (HCD)'. Frequency sensing shock absorber that this study will cover belongs to the HCD. This study aims to demonstrate that performance of frequency sensing shock absorber is superior than that of passive shock absorber. Study process is as follows. Firstly, analysis models for both passive shock absorber and frequency sensing shock absorber are developed to secure reliability. Then, elements which cause difference of ride quality are found out through comparison of hysteresis characteristics. By comparison of frequency characteristic, furthermore, damping principle of frequency sensing shock absorber is understood. Also, it determines if the absorber performs well even though maximum excitation speed is changed. Finally, the study proves that performance of frequency sensing shock absorber is superior than that of passive shock absorber after comparing change of damping power in excitation condition that various frequencies are mixed.
This paper presents a nonlinear controller design for optical disk drive systems to improve anti-shock performance. The nonlinear anti-shock controller is added parallel to the original linear servo control loop. In the previous work, dead-zone nonlinear element is used for nonlinear controller and PID control method is used for linear controller. Although this strategy improves anti-shock performance, it has a narrow stability bound. In this paper, we propose dead-zone with saturation nonlinear element for the nonlinear controller. Since this nonlinear element improves stability margin, we can use higher gain of dead-zone than the controller with dead-zone only. In the linear controller design, we show that lead-lag control has improved stability margin over PID control. Numerical simulation results show that the proposed method can get better performance to the external shock than previously proposed method.
The performance of shock absorber is directly related to the car behaviour and performance, both for handling and ride comfort. The displacement sensitive shock absorber has two modes of damping force (i.e. soft and hard) according to the position of piston. In this study, a mathematical nonlinear dynamic model is introduced to predict the performance of displacement sensitive shock absorber. Especially in this paper, the transient zone is considered and the simulation result is well fit with experimental data. And the vehicle dynamic characteristic of displacement sensitive shock absorber is presented using quarter car simulation model. The simulation results of frequency response are compared with passive shock absorber.
In this study, a new mathematical dynamic model of displacement sensitive shock absorber (DSSA) is proposed to predict the dynamic characteristics of automotive shock absorber. The performance of shock absorber is directly related to the vehicle behaviors and performance, both for handling and ride comfort. The proposed model of the DSSA has two modes of damping force (i.e. soft and hard) according to the position of piston. In this paper, the performance of the DSSA is analyzed by considering the transient zone for more exact dynamic characteristics. For the mathematical modeling of DSSA, flow continuity equations at the compression and rebound chamber are formulated. And the flow equations at the compression and rebound stroke are formulated, respectively. Also, the flow analysis at the reservoir chamber is carried out. Accordingly, the damping force of the shock absorber is determined by the forces acting on the both side of piston. The analytic result of damping force characteristics are compared with the experimental results to prove the effectiveness. Especially, the effects of displacement sensitive orifice area and the effects of displacement sensitive orifice length on the damping force are observed, respectively. The results reported herein will provide a better understanding of the shock absorber.
The performance of shock absorber is directly related to the car behaviour and performance, both for handling and comfort. In this study, a mathematical nonlinear dynamic model and computational method are introduced to study the flow and performance of shock absorber. The flow characteristics of components(piston and body valve) are investigated and applied to dynamic modeling of shock absorber to predict the damping force. The simulation results agree with the test data well. The shock absorber model proposed in this paper is applicable as a part of a full vehicle suspension simulation.
In this study, Shock Absorption performance of Magneto-rheological elastomer(MRE) is identified through the drop impact test. Magneto-rheological materials are divided into two groups by MR fluid in fluid state and MR elastomer in solid state like rubber. The stiffness characteristics of Magneto-rheological material can be changed as magnetic field is applied. The impact loads in MR elastomer were measured under weight of impactor. Experiment results are shown through the experiments to confirm the effect of shock absorption of MR elastomer. Thus, the MR elastomer can be applied to shock absorber used in area that shock occurs.
The performance of shock absorber is directly related to the car behavior and performance, both for handling and comfort. Most of compact car are assembled the passive shock absorber for cost effect but some of compact driver want better performance of shock absorber than standard parts. Therefore, they want the semi-active suspension control system instead of standard damper system. But they only can change the mechanical damping control shock absorber at A/S market. The mechanical damping control shack absorber can not vary the damping force in driving condition so they do not satisfy the mechanical damping control shock absorber system. In this study, electrically damping force controlled shock absorber system is developed based on the mechanical damping force control damper system. This system can vary damping force by switch on dashboard in driving condition. And, this system can satisfy the requirement of tuning market. Therefore, it is expected the system to show the engineering capability of korean damper company and to increase export market share to oversea damper market.
