  • Although the localization rate of shipbuilding and marine equipment goods is set to be 70 percent by 2020, but the localization rate of equipment and materials for shipbuilding and marine facilities is currently 10 to 30 percent. For Korea's Big 3 shipbuilders, which build 70 percent of the world's largest shipbuilders, localization of shipbuilding equipment and equipment is an essential factor. In particular, there is a growing need to localize equipment and materials in terms of the number of lead standards and A/S. It is expected that there will be a rapid expansion of LNG carriers in the future, and it is necessary to develop equipment and equipment materials of LNG ships. In this study, the design and manufacture of LNG vessel equipment was conducted. Design and basic performance tests of 4-inch QCDC for LNG bunkering were conducted.

  • During sailing by wind-driven thrust on the sail, a catamaran sailing yacht generates leeway and heeling. For estimating resistance and moment prediction of a real ship by changing of running attitude, a model test of the ship has to be carried out. This study aims at establishing experimental techniques for a catamaran sailing yacht by changed attitude during running direction. Through the model test, drag and side force of the real ship are predicted. Also through experiment, rolling and yawing moments were considered.

  • During sailing by wind-driven thrust on the sail, a catamaran sailing yacht generates leeway and heeling. For predicting sail force, a model test was carried out according to running attitude. Through the model test, drag and side force of the real ship was predicted. A purpose of this study is to find sail force to C.E from changed attitude during running direction. By balance of hull and sail, a heeling force of designed sail is predicted. Also through heeling force and driving force, total sail force and direction from C.E are considered with changed mast including leeway and heeling.

  • The Korean marine equipment industry is, in significant ways, behind the shipbuilding industry. For example, in terms of the number of orders received, the shipbuilding industry has ranked first in the world since 2003. In contrast, the global competitiveness of Korea's marine equipment industry is still relatively weak. This is important not only for the equipment industry, but because these two industries have many links. The structure of this research was firstly, to identify theoretical issues by looking at the characteristics of the marine equipment companies, marketing recognition, uses of marketing, and financial outcomes. Second, the study developed an analytical framework for empirical examination using configuration of each factor. Third, each factor has been analysed empirically. Forth, this study presents the importance of marketing for marine equipment companies within Korea, as well as in a global market. Finally, the study suggests a new marketing strategy for Korea's marine equipment companies to achieve global competitiveness.

  • This study investigates cargo management issues in the shipbuilding and marine equipment industry. Problems are analyzed concerning the absence of information about exact cargo location and condition, damage, loss, replacement, and transportation delays during the import and export process. Then, improvements are proposed to solve these problems. To illustrate, real time information about the status and location of cargo should be communicated between import/export and logistics companies to facilitate material logistics for shipbuilding & marine equipment. In addition, a standard cargo classification and recognition system should be established to reduce delivery delays and mistakes, so then enhancing logistical efficiency. Moreover, it is also necessary to nurture professional shipbuilding & marine equipment forwarders to strengthen their expertise with professional education and training.

  • To create the value-added in the field of the shipbuilding, we have to vitalize the marine equipment industry. However the competitiveness is inclined to its outward than inward in the field of the shipbuilding in our country. Especially the field of the marine equipment industry needs to acquire the competitiveness as soon as possible in comparison with an advanced country. Therefore, this paper analyzes the characteristics of the marine equipment, the present situation of the marine equipment industry, the present situation of the demand-supply, the localization of the marine equipment, so that it can raise the competitiveness of the marine equipment industry. Based on this paper, it is the purpose of this paper to derive the alternative for acquiring the competitiveness. This paper is trying to find the way to progress the marine equipment industry and suggest well-founded data for acquiring the competitiveness.

  • This study attempted an AHP analysis through interview with experts in the industries and questionnaire survey on recognition of organization members and future strategic development direction in order to upgrade shipbuilding equipment industries to marine plant equipment industries. Key research results are as follows. First, according to analysis on relative priority between three aspects on acceleration of shipbuilding equipment industries, importance was shown in the order of acceleration of internal competence, acceleration of manufacturing technology, and acceleration of supply chain, which means that the aspect on acceleration of internal competence had relatively higher importance. Second, as for relative importance of detailed item evaluation per respective aspect, it was found that development of core competencies was high from the aspect on acceleration of internal competence, higher value-addition was high from the aspect on acceleration of manufacturing technology, and IT infrastructure construction was high from the aspect on acceleration of supply chain.

  • This paper investigated the impact of economic cycles in the shipbuilding industry on managerial performance of marine paint and coatings firms. As part of the upstream to ship construction, the marine equipment industry plays a critical role in determining the competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry. Despite a close interaction between the two sectors, the majority of research on the marine equipment industry has highlighted securing competitiveness edge and developing advanced technologies, paying little academic attention to the relationship between shipbuilding and managerial performance. In this regard, this paper examined how economic cycles in shipbuilding affected growth and profitability of marine paint and coatings firms. To this end, managerial performances of six marine paint and coatings firms for the period of 2003-2022 were analyzed in panel regressions. Results indicated that the shipbuilding economic cycle proxied by delivery amounts of Korean shipyards was positively associated with growth and profitability of marine paint and coatings firms. However, there was divergence in statistical significance by shipbuilding indicators. While coefficients of compensated gross tonnage, gross tonnage, and monetary amount were statistically significant, that of deadweight tonnage was not. Findings of this study imply that managerial performances of marine paint and coatings firms are affected by the amount of value added from the shipbuilding industry rather than its absolute size.

  • The application of three-dimensional (3-D) CAD has been popularized for design and production and digital manufacturing has been spreading in many industrial fields. By simulation of the production process using 3-D digital models, which are the core of CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) system, the efficiency and safety of production are improved at each stage of work, and optimization of manufacturing can be achieved. This paper firstly describes the concept of "simulation based production" in shipbuilding and also digital manufacturing; the 3-D CAD system is indispensable for effective simulation because ship structure is three dimensionally complex. By simulation, "computer optimized manufacturing" can be possible. The most effective fields of simulation in shipbuilding are in jobs where many parties have to cooperate, while existing two-dimensional drawings are hardly observed the whole structures due to interference between structures or equipment of complex shape. In this paper some examples of the successful application in IHIMU (IHI Marine United Inc.) are shown: assembly of a pipe unit, erection of a complex hull block, carriage of equipment, installation of a propeller, and access in an engine room.

  • In this study, the numerical simulation and basin model test have been performed to evaluate sea worthiness and resistance performance for a small pre-planning three type of leisure boats which are U, V, Y shapes of hull forms. As a well known commercial CFD code, Maxsurf, was applied for modeling hull forms used as the solver of motion analysis. Also the model resistance test was carried out to estimate the effective power of boat in the basin tank. Numerical simulation and model test results show that Y-shaped hull is better than the other types in terms of heave and pitch motion, having a key effect on a boat sea worthiness. But V-type hull is more efficiency than others cases in resistance performance.
