The ship wake generated by rotation of the propeller yields changes of characteristics of sound wave such as attenuation and scattering. To develope a battle field environment simulator for military purposes, it is very important to understand acoustical properties of ship wake. Existing research results have limitations in direct application because they performed under simple conditions or model ships were applied. In this study, we developed a ship wake generation model based on the ship's geometric wake distribution theory. The model can provide spatial distribution and void fraction with various marine environments as well as ship size. Through the developed model, geometric distribution features of ship wake according to the ship's maneuvering conditions were successfully simulated. In addition, changes of the bubble void fraction with time at any location within the battle field environment were identified. Therefore, the developed model is expected to be used in the development of a simulator to measure the acoustic characteristics of the ship wake.
A kinematics model of a ship wake in the presence of surface waves generated by wind is presented. It was found that a stationary wave structure behind a ship covered a wedge region with the angle at the top of the wake and that only divergent waves were present in a ship wake instead of both the longitudinal and cross-waves, which are known as the Kelvin model. Ship motion at some angle to wind waves can cause an essential asymmetry of the wake, compressing its windward half.
Flew control devices, such as flow liners, are frequently introduced in a cavitation tunnel in order to reduce the tunnel blockage effect, when a three-dimensional wake distribution is simulated using a complete ship model or a dummy model. In order to estimate the tunnel wall effect and to evaluate the effect of flow liners on the simulated wake distribution, a surface panel method is adopted for the calculation of the flow around a ship model and flow liners installed in a rectangular test section off cavitation tunnel. Calculation results on the Sydney Express ship model show that the tunnel wall effect on the hull surface pressure distribution is negligible for less than 5% blockage and can be appreciable for more than 20% blockage. The flow liners accelerate the flow near the afterbody of the ship model, so that the pressure gradient there becomes more favorable and accordingly the boundary layer thickness would be reduced. Since the resulting wake distribution is assumed to resemble the full scale wake, flow liners can also be used to simulate an estimated full scale wake without modifying the ship model. Boundary taper calculation should be incorporated in order to correlate the calculated wake distribution with the measured one.

Assessment of hydrodynamic performance of a ship hull has been focused on a model ship rather than a full-scale ship. In order to design the propeller of a ship, model-scale wake is often extended to full-scale based upon an empirical method or designer's experience, since wake measurement data for a full-scale ship is very rare. Recently modern CFD tools made some success in reproducing wake field of a model ship, which implicates that there are some possibilities of the accurate prediction of full-scale wakes. In this paper firstly the evaluation of model-scale wake obtained by Fluent package was performed. It was found that CFD calculation with the Reynolds-stress model (RSM) provided much better agreement with wake measurement in the towing tank than with the realizable k-$\varepsilon$ model (RKE). In the next full-scale wake was calculated using the same package to find out the difference between model and full-scale wakes. Three hull forms of KLNG, KCS, KVLCC2 having measurement data open for the public, were chosen for the comparison of resistance, form factor, and propeller plane wake between model ships and full-scale ships.
A series of towing tank tests were carried out for 18 full ship models of high block coefficients. The resistance coefficients and wake distribution at the propeller plane were measured and carefully examined. Regression analysis was employed to find out the relationships with the hull form parameters. Equations for wave resistance coefficient, form factor, and nominal wake are given. A harmonic analysis of measured wake was performed to look into the influence of the local stern shape on the magnitude of fluctuating wake components at three different radii. The amplitude of wake harmonics was also expressed by regression quations. It was found that the regression formulas were very useful in estimating resistance and circumferential wake characteristics of full ship models. It was also considered that the formulas presented in this paper could be utilized in the hull form improvement in a preliminary design.

This paper proposes robust ship wake search method in the target evasion environment. Moving surface ships generate a long trailing wake in the rear of a surface ship. Wake homing torpedo sensing this wake can detect the surface target and engage it automatically. In wake homing torpedo, wake search method is important element to maximize effectiveness of wake homing torpedo. This paper proposes one-side, two-side and centering mode according to passing wake boundary scenarios. Also, wake deflection angle is deduced by using the principle of deflection angle of acoustic torpedo. The representative experimental results using monte-carlo simulation demonstrate that the searching method using one-side mode is superior to two-side and centering mode in the target evasion environment.

Analysis: of the propulsion performance considering ship motion in waves is an important factor for the efficient operation of a ship. The interaction between the propeller and the free surface due to the ship motion in waves has a significant influence on the propulsion performance. However, most recent studies regarding the hydrodynamic performance of ships in waves focus on the added resistance, and experimental and numerical data on the propulsion performance considering the ship motion in waves are very rare. In this study, a numerical investigation of the nominal wake in regular head waves is performed for a KVLCC2 model ship for the fully-loaded condition. Phase-averaged wake fields for one period are compared with experimental data measured using Stereo PIV, showing good agreement. The effect of the ship motion on the characteristics of the wake field and the axial velocity in the propeller plane are investigated while varying the wave length.
This paper proposes a robust detection method for ship wake search using two wake sensors. A long trailing wake in the rear of a surface ship is generated along the track of surface ships. In this paper, we assume that the nearer the surface ship, the stronger wake strength is and a two-sensor based wake homing torpedo can sense for the wake strength. On this assumption we propose a simple wake detection and search method using information of wake strength. Experimental results using monte-carlo simulation demonstrate that the proposed method yields better performance in search time than previous method, which uses a single sensor. Our method is shown faster by about 45 seconds than previous method to achieve the same performance. Also, it can improve the detection performance of torpedo in the case of short wake length.

The wake-homing underwater guided weapon that detects and tracks wake generated during voyage of a surface ship is impossible to avoid with the present acoustic deception torpedo defense system. Therefore, research on bubble-generating wake decoy is necessary to deceive wake-homing underwater guided weapon. Experiments in various environments are required to verify the effective operation method and performance of the wake decoy, but performance verification through underwater experiment is limited. In this paper, we develop a simulator for an torpedo defense system of surface ship, which is applied bubble-generating wake decoy, against acoustic, wake, and hybrid homing underwater guided weapon attack. The simulator includes surface ship model, acoustic decoy(static, mobile) model, bubble-generating wake decoy model, search and motion model of underwater guided weapon and so on. By integrating various models, MATLAB GUI simulator was developed. Through the simulation results for various environmental variables by this simulator, it is judged that effective operation method and performance verification of the bubble-generating wake decoy can be performed.
It is necessary to quickly detect and respond to ship accidents that occur continuously due to the influence of the recently increased maritime traffic. For this purpose, ship detection research is being actively conducted based on satellite images that can be monitored in real time over a wide area. However, there is a possibility that the wake may be falsely detected as a ship because the wake removal is not performed in previous studies that performed ship detection using spectral characteristics. Therefore, in this study, ship detection was performed using SDI (Ship Detection Index) based on the Sentinel-2A satellite image, and the wake was removed by utilizing the difference in the spectral characteristics of the ship and the wake. Probability of detection (POD) and false alarm rate (FAR) indices were used to verify the accuracy of the ship detection algorithm in this study. As a result of the verification, POD was similar and FAR was improved by 6.4% compared to the result of applying only SDI.
