The goal of this work is to establish the reliability of FCA welded joints for high strength EH36-TMCP ultra thick plate. For this, heat conduction and thermo elasto-plastic analyses have been conducted on a multi-pass, X-groove, butt-joint model to clarify the thermal and mechanical behavior (residual stresses, magnitude of the stresses, and their production and distribution mechanisms) of the weld joint. In addition, the results of the welding residual stress obtained from thermo elasto-plastic analysis was verified and compared with results obtained by XRD analysis.

In the ship and offshore structure design, age-related problems such as corrosion damage, local denting, and fatigue damage are important factors to be considered in building a reliable structure as they have a significant influence on the residual structural capacity. In shipping, corrosion addition methods are widely adopted in structural design to prevent structural capacity degradation. The present study focuses on the historical trend of corrosion addition rules for ship structural design and investigates their effects on the ultimate strength performance such as hull girder and stiffened panel of double hull oil tankers. Three types of rules based on corrosion addition models, namely historic corrosion rules (pre-CSR), Common Structural Rules (CSR), and harmonised Common Structural Rules (CSR-H) are considered and compared with two other corrosion models namely UGS model, suggested by the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), and Time-Dependent Corrosion Wastage Model (TDCWM). To identify the general trend in the effects of corrosion damage on the ultimate longitudinal strength performance, the corrosion addition rules are applied to four representative sizes of double hull oil tankers namely Panamax, Aframax, Suezmax, and VLCC. The results are helpful in understanding the trend of corrosion additions for tanker structures.

Welding is essential in ship production since welding is very popular method for joining two or more metals. However, welding causes residual stress and distortion and these give a bad influence to the structure strength and assembly of ship blocks. Therefore, prediction and treatment of residual stress and distortion is a key to accuracy control in shipyard. In this paper, a computational procedure, based on thermal-elastic-plastic 3-dimensional FEA, has been suggested to simulate butt and fillet welding process. In the simulation process, temperature distribution at each time step is obtained by heat transfer analysis and then thermal deformation analysis is done with obtained temperature distributions to find the residual stress and distortion. In heat transfer analysis, enthalpy method is used to realize phase change at melting temperature. Also element birth and death method is used to simulate adding of weld metal in both heat transfer analysis and thermal elastic plastic analysis. The proposed procedure is verified by related researches and the results show good agreement with those of related researches.

Loads on offshore structures are largely transferred to the bracing members in the form of axial forces. The detrimental effects of imperfections on compressive strength are well recognized. Damage in the members of offshore structures would significantly affect the compressive behavior of the members. As a result, such damages may also affect the ability of the structure to withstand the functional and environmental loads. It is important to be able to assess the residual strength of damaged members quickly and accurately. This will help operators to make the decision whether the member has to be repaired or not. In this study, a series of calculation is performed to study the effects of different parameters on the behavior of such damaged members under axial load. And the results of analysis are compared with those of experiment.

A simple estimation system of ultimate and residual strength for ship structures is developed on the Open-Window system of SUN4 engineering workstation. System development consists of three stages. Firstly, various ultimate longitudinal strength estimation methods are investigated and some rational estimation methods are adopted based on the parametric comparison of various hulls or box girders. Secondly, these selected and newly formulated methods are linked with elastic & perfectly plastic section modulus calculation procedure. Therefore, the longitudinal hull girder strength can be calculated in the intact and damaged conditions due to the grounding or collision of hull structure. Finally, an exclusive system is developed such that whole procedures are proceeded under the window management system using mouse button and elastic and perfect plastic stress conditions. Also longitudinal members are plotted automatically under three dimensional graphic circumstances. These established program is tested for various actual ships, and some examples are illustrated.

In this paper, an efficient method for the ultimate longitudinal strength analysis of the double skin hull girder is presented by using idealized structural unit method. Idealized plate element subjected to biaxial load is developed taking account of initial deflection and welding residual stress. Interaction effect between local and global buckling in the whole structure is also taken into consideration. The reserve strength factor and reliability index for the example 40K double skin product oil carrier are evacuated against the ultimate longitudinal strength. It is concluded that the prudent method seems to be useful in the sense that the computing time required is very short while giving the reasonable solution.
Fiber-reinforced composites are extensively used in electronic, ship and aerospace applications due to their high strength and high toughess. In these applications, they are often subjected to localized heat damage due to various sources. In order to ensure their reliability, it is important to predict their residual properties using nondestructive evaluation thchniques. Fabric fiber composite specimens were manufactured with six layers of the glass-fiber prepreg and the carbon-fiber prepreg, respectively. The specimens were subjected to a localized heat damage using a heated copper tip with a diameter of 10mm at 35$0^{\circ}C$(CFRP) and 30$0^{\circ}C$(GFRP), respectively. The specimens were then subjected to tension tests while acoustic emission (AE) activities of specimens were collected. The AE activity of all specimens showed three types of distinct frequency regions. Those are matrix cracking, failure of the fiber/matrix interface and fiber breakage.

The demands of size and quality of large steel shaft forgings for ship building, power plant, steel plant, etc. are rapidly increasing, and some of these productions are manufactured from ingot weighing more than 300 tons. For use as rotating components. shafts require toughness, strength and homogeneity, and therefore are produced through a variety of heat treatments. According to the increase of ingot size, micro- and macrosegregation and also mass effect of the product increase. Thus, special care should be paid to the heat treatment of such large shaft forgings. In this paper, the heat treatment of large shaft forgings such as rotor and back-up roll is calculated using the commercial finite element code SYSWELD. Calculated distributions of temperature and phase are compared with experimental data. The continuous cooling transformation diagram, thermal and mechanical properites of each phase are used. The phase proportion, hardness and residual stress during water quenching are discussed.

Ships operated at sea for a long time are subjected to various kinds of loads, which may cause various types of damage. Such damages will eventually reduce the strength of hull structures. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate and evaluate the residual strength and remaining fatigue life of aging ships in order to secure structural safety, establish a reasonable maintenance plan, and make a judgment of life extension. For this purpose, the corrosion damage and local denting damage should be measured, fatigue damage estimation should be performed, and material properties of aged steel should be identified. For this study, in order to investigate the mechanical properties of aged steel, steel plates were obtained from a naval ship that reached the end of her life span. The specimens were manufactured from the obtained steel plates, and static and dynamic tensile tests, fatigue tests, and metallographic tests were performed. The mechanical properties obtained from the aged steel plates were compared with those of new steel plates to quantify the aging effect on the mechanical properties of marine steel materials.
The welding methods have been applied to the most structural products used in the automobile, ship construction, and construction. The structure steel must have sufficient strength of structure; However, the mechanical properties of the welded part changes when it is welded. Therefore, the stability or life of the structure may be affected by the changed mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the welded part must be examined in order to ensure the safety of structure. In this research, the SS400 steel and the STS304 steel were used to estimate the mechanical properties of the HAZ by weld thermal cycle simulation. In this study, the materials were used to examine the weld thermal cycle simulation characteristic, under two conditions: the drawing with diameter of $\Phi$10 and the residual stress removal treatment. To examine the mechanical properties by the weld thermal cycle simulation, the tensile test was carried out in room temperature. The crosshead speed was lmm/min.
