  • Ship Autopilots are usually designed based on the PD and Pill controllers because of simplicity, reliability and easy to construct. However their performance in various environmental conditions is not as good as desired. This disadvantage can be overcome by adjusting works or constructing adaptive controllers. But those methods are complex and not easy to do. This paper presents a new method for constructing a Ship Autopilot based on the combination of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) and Linear Control Theory (Pill control). The new Ship Autopilot has the advantages of both the Pill and FLC control methodologies: easy to construct, and optimal control laws can be established based on ship masters' knowledge. Therefore, the new ship autopilot can be well adapted with parameter variations and strong environment effects. Simulation using MATLAB software for a ship with real parameters shows high effectiveness of the Fuzzy Pill autopilot in course keeping and course changing manoeuvres in comparison with the ordinary Pill ship autopilots.

  • In this paper, a synthetic method for evaluating the seakeeping performance of a ship in waves is studied. For the prediction and evaluation of irregular phenomena to be correlated each other, the multi-dimensional Rayleigh's joint probability density function and the cumulative distribution function are approximated. According to this approximated function, it is able to calculate easily the occurrence probability of the factors on seakeeping performance. We proposed an evaluation method and an index to be defined by the seakeeping performance reliability, that is considered as the dangerousness and the relative dangerousness of the factors on seakeeping performance in waves. The use of this method aid index will be effective to install the sensors which are necessary to evaluate the states of ships at sea. Some example of the calculations by this method for 175m length single screw container ship equipped with diesel engine are also presented.

  • Shipping company and operators have to manage well to keep shipping schedules without problems in main engine. Specially operators have to operate main engine within the limit of operation point, and adjust related parameters to be operated safely and continuously. Also operators have ability to analyze fouling condition of hull through comparing data gotten from P-V curve and performance results of new building ships in trial with service ships. In this study, not only compared main engine performance results in shop trial and sea trial, but also investigated performance trend in accordance with the time elapsed for the service ship's diesel engine. They were confirmed as follows. First, shop trial load is higher than sea trial load but ship's speed is satisfied with owner's contract speed. Second as time goes by, load of service ship increases steadily and other parameters related with main engine shows variable change depend on main engine load increasing.

  • Traditional methods of research on ship maneuvering performance were estimated in calm water. Ship maneuverability in waves is of vital importance for navigation safety of a ship (ITTC, 2008). The accurate estimation of force and moment acting on the ship and rudder behind propeller are necessary because the rudder, propeller and hull interaction is of key importance. In addition, course-keeping ability and maneuvering performance of a ship can be significantly affected by the presence of wave. In this study, the model test is performed in the regular wave in the square wave tank in Changwon National University and the hydrodynamic force acting on the ship hull and rudder behind the propeller in various wave directions is investigated. The effect of wavelength and wave direction on hydrodynamic force acting on ship and rudder behind propeller in regular waves is discussed.

  • IMO stability regulations include various stability parameters such as GM values. To assess the stability of the ships, we should check all stability parameters of the IMO requirements. However, since this process is complex, a more convenient way to evaluate stability performance is required. In this research, the index for marine ship intact stability assessment (IMSISA) model was developed to solve these problems. The IMSISA model consists of a stability index calculation module and a stability assessment module. In the stability index calculation module, ten stability parameters, including GM, were used to develop the stability index, which has the advantage of being able to quantify the ship stability. The stability assessment module uses the stability index value to determine the stability status of the ship and provides the captain with stability management guidelines. To verify the proposed model, the basic stability calculations were performed for two model ships in 32 loading situations. The proposed model was found to provide better performance in the stability assessment than the previous study. By applying the IMSISA model to the ships, the captain can assess the ship stability more quantitatively and efficiently.

  • Recently, ship collision accidents account for $20\%\∼30\%$ of domestic marine accidents, also have increased continually. In this paper, therefore we propose the development of Ship Collision Avoidance Support program for decreasing ship collision accidents. This program has been developed on the basis of CCAS-Model. A CCAS-Model has ship's maneuvering performance and has studied for the propose of supporting to avoid ship collision in close quarters. Besides, the program will effectively support maneuvering for collision avoidance through displaying the feasible area and the method of collision avoidance using own ship's turning characteristic about action of target ship's keeping course and velocity in various encounter.

  • One of the most important missons that are imposed on merchant ship at sea is to accomplish the safe transportation of cargo loaded. Recently, a study on the seakeeping performance has been carried out on the development of evaluation system related to the synthetic safety of a ship at sea. The seakeeping performance is the ship's ability sailing at, and executing its misson against adverse environmental factors successfully and safely. Until now, however, there has not been any method of quantitative evaluation on the dynamic safety of the ship's cargo loaded. In this regards, this paper has introduced the evaluation method of dynamic safety of the ship's cargo. In order to evaluate the dynamic safety of cargo, the vertical and lateral acceleration which causes the collapse, racking and local structure failure of cargo was adopted as the evaluation factors in the ship's motions. The response amplitude of ship's motions in regular waves is manipulated by NSM (New Strip Method) on a given 2,700 TEU full container vessel under the wind forces of 7, 8 and 9 Beaufort scale. Each response of ship's motions induced by NSM was applied to short-crested irregular waves for stochastic process on evaluation factors and then vertical and lateral acceleration of each cargo was compared with significant amplitude of each acceleration. A representative dangerous factor was determined by comparing permissible values of stacking and racking forces occurred typically to the vertical and transverse directions with the container strength required on ISO 1496 at the positions of forecastle, poop and ship's midship respectively. Through the occurrence probability of the determined factor by Rayleigh's probability density function, the dangerousness which limits loads on container's side wall as an evaluation was applied in judging of the danger of the ship's cargo loaded.

  • A ship runs with various modes of motion due to waves. Among the modes, roll mainly influences on the safety of cargos and crew's fatigue. Therefore a ship equipped with anti-rolling devices are on an increasing trend. In this research, we developed a free running model ship to evaluate the performances of fin stabilizer and moving weight stabilizer. Also those performance tests were carried out through the proposed test procedure.

  • Desalination plant ships have been recently regarded as one of the probable solutions for drought seasons in many countries. Because desalination plants should be mounted on the desalination ships and special purpose storages such as salty waste water tanks are necessary, onboard and compartment arrangements would be distinguished from those of other conventional commercial ships. This paper introduces some basic design procedure including resistance/propulsion and seakeeping performances. The ship lines were improved step by step after modification of the ship lines and verification of resistance/propulsion performances using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). After finalization of the ship lines, the seakeeping performance was also evaluated to check motion behaviors and drive wave-induced loads such as the wave shear force and bending moment. It was proved that the predicted long-term vertical wave shear force and bending moment were significantly less than the rule-based ones, thus it is expected that the deliverables of this study will reduce the construction cost of desalination plant ships.
