Perception of Ship's Movement in Docking Maneuvering using Ship-Handling Simulator

  • Recently it is coming to be hish reality on visual system in ship-handling simulator depending on the technical development of 3D computer graphics. Even with high reality, it is possible that visual information presented seafarers through screen or display is not equivalent to the real world. In docking maneuvering, visual targets or obstructs are sighted close to ship's operator or within few hundred meters, so it might be possible to affect visual information such as the difference between both eyes' and single eye's visual sight. Because it is not possible to perceive of very slow ship's movement by visual in case of very large vessels, so the Doppler Docking SONAR and/or Docking Speed and Distance Measurement Equipment were developed and applied for safety docking maneuvering. By the way, the simulator training includes the ship's maneuvering training in docking, but in Ship-handling Simulator and also onboard, there are some limitations of perception of ship's movement with visual information. In this paper, perception of ship's movement with visual system in Ship-handling Simulator and competition of performances of visual systems that are conventional screen type with Fixed Eye-point system and Mission Simulator. We got some conclusions not only on the effectiveness for visual system but also on the human behavior in docking maneuver.

선박운항 시뮬레이터를 위한 해양파 가시화 방안 고찰 (A Review on the Visualization Plan of Ocean Waves for Ship Maneuvering Simulator)

  • 본 기술보고에서는 선박운항 시뮬레이터를 위한 해양파 가시화의 개선을 목적으로 여러 해양파 가시화 요소 및 그에 대한 전체적인 재현 방안에 대해 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 우선 해양파 가시화 요소를 해양파 표면, 해양파 부서짐, 상호작용, 광원, 수중 등으로 구분하고, 각 구성 요소별 가시화가 필요한 세부 가시화 요소들을 정리 하였다. 또한 이를 재현하는 과정에서 설계에 반영해야 할 내용들을 사실적 해양파 가시화 및 실시간 해양파 가시화, 선박 운동특성 재현, 시뮬레이터의 활용 관점에서 분석하였다. 분석을 통해, 사실적 해양파 가시화가 몰입감 형성 및 보다 정확한 선박 운동특성 재현, 다양하고 제어 가능한 시뮬레이션 시나리오 생성 등에 중요한 역할을 수행함을 확인하였다. 또한 선박운항 시뮬레이터를 위한 해양파 가시화는 고려해야 할 요소 및 그에 대한 구현 방안, 관련 제약 사항이 많은 만큼 구현 전 종합적이고 체계적인 접근이 필요함을 확인하였다.

  • Most of the ShipHandling Simulators of full-mission-bridge system need vast area to install and even PC-based maneuvering simulators are often equipped with Steering Wheel or Engine Telegraphe etc. of data input interface, which necessarily makes the user face with excessive financial burden. These have been one of the obstacles for the officers, captains, pilots and students in access to maneuvering simulation whenever they want to try it in advance prior to actual ship maneuvering. Subsequently, all the officers and captains come to have little chances to train themselves until they arualified as a pilot after a long period of time of realship maneuvering practice on board, which means they have to control they have to control their own ship at sea without clear understanding on her maneuverability when they are forced to do it on the way. And these lack of capability for maneuvering have used so often to result in marine casualties of collision with other ships or pier facilities while maneuvering in harbor. To prevent those accidents by means of enhancing their maneuvering ability, PC-based DeskTop Simulator that allows anyong to access readily at anytime is needed and in conformation to such demand this simulator has been developed. The Software this simulator written in Turbo Pascal Ver. 5.0 has adopted MMG mathmatical model theoretically in part and also it was designed to make it possible that all numeric data inputs and outputs with graphic presentation for maneuvering operation be carried out just only with keyboard and monitor console. With the Simulation software, all the officers, captains, pilots and even students who has a proper computer at hand are expected to be able to make an attempt to simulate the maneuvering of their ownship or any other types of them at any port in which they want to do it.

  • 선박의 항행안전의 문제가 중요시됨에 따라 선박조종시뮬레이터를 이용한 운항훈련, 안전성 검토 등이 필요성이 중요하게 인식되고 있다. 또한 추진성능을 향상시킬 목적으로 다양한 선종이 출현되고 있고, 이에 따라 선박조종시뮬레이터의 개발에 있어서 선박의 데이터베이스는 필수적이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 선종에 따른 수학모델을 각각 선박조종시뮬레이터에 적용시킴으로써 다양한 조종 시뮬레이션을 가능하게 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 우수한 추진성능을 목적으로 한 2축2타선박을 대상으로 조종운동 수학모델을 정식화하였다. 구체적으로 항만내에서의 저속시 조종운동을 구현할 수 있는 수학모델에 대해서 검토하였으며, 선체·프로펠러·타의 상호간섭에 대해서도 고려하였다. 또한, 수치시뮬레이션을 수행함으로써 2축2타선박의 기본적인 조종성능을 확인하였다.

소형 컴퓨터를 이용한 선박 조종 시뮬레이터 개발 (Development of a PC-based Ship Maneuvering Simulator)

  • A PC-based ship maneuvering simulator was developed which was configured in a high performance IBM PC compatible i486 and i286 computer with a TMS 340 graphic signal processor and 10 MBPS Ethernet Cards. A real-time ship maneuvering simulation program was developed which includes computer generated imagery (CGI) for bird's eye view type and perspective view type. The simulator H/W was designed and manufactured and S/W for interface of various navigation equipments was made Especially, programs for output, analysis, and assessment of simulations results were developed. Communications between PC's are made by using Ethernet bus type LAN system. Simulations could be performed under various environments (current, wind, wave etc.) using data base of harbors and ships. This system can be used for various purposes such as crew's training, harbor and waterway design, and assessment of ship maneuverability in harbor.

  • - We explored the application of VR technologies to implement VR-Based Navigation Simulator Using VRML. - VR Ship Simulator gave some useful functions such as maneuvering ship with ease of learning the International Conventions to Preventing Collisions at sea. - AtoN Simulator can give attractive and interesting experiences with ease of learning the rules of IALA system and ease of comprehension of Aids to Navigation characteristics in various weather conditions - Results from tests, it became apparent that the developed VR-based Navigation Simulator could be adequate to next generation ship simulator.

여천항에서의 32만 DWT급 원유 운반선의 선박운항 안전성 평가 (Safety Assessment of Ship Navigation at Yeocheon Harbor for 320,000DWT VLCC)

  • It is well known that simulation study in the preliminary design stage of harbors or berths is of great use, since it can provide helpful informations to the designer from the view point of ship navigations. In this paper, a brief review is made in the safety assessment of ship navigation for a 320,000 DWT VLCC entering Yecocheon harbor area, which is carried out by shiphandling simulator system. The geographic data base for the harbor as well as the mathematical models of the ship and environmental effects are designed and developed. Based in the on-site inspections and interviews with pilots in Yeocheon area, basic maneuvering plans and consistence with real operation conditions. Berthing and deberthing maneuvering simulations as well as approaching and departing simulations are carried out by 3 experienced navigators according to the maneuvering plans and environmental scenarios. The simulation results are analysed in various ways to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative maneuvering difficulties and thereby to assess the safety of ship navigation in that area.

굴곡된 협수로 통항에서 조반자의 주관적 위험감지도와 조종인난도와의 상관관계에 관한 기초 연구 (A Study on the Correlation between Shiphandler's Subjective Evaluation and Maneuvering Difficulty in Curved Narrow Channel)

  • The assesment of the safety of ship's transit in a curved narrow channel consists of the maneuvering safety determined by the chance of running aground, the maneuvering difficulty determined by ship's workload, and shiphandler's subjective evaluation. In this study, to examine the correlation between shiphandler's subjective evaluation and the maneuvering safety, the real-time and full-mission shiphandling simulator in the Korea Marine Training & Research Institute(KMTRI) was utilized. On the conning bridge of the shiphandling simulator, 50 experienced masters have conducted the modeled vessel of 60, 000 deadweight tonnage along the designed channel under 3 different environmental conditions. It was possible to assess and analyze theoretically the correlation between the shiphandler's subjective evaluation and maneuvering difficulty under each environmental condition by quantifying the data obtained from the tests. The results are as follows: $\circled1$ As the degree of maneuvering difficulty increases, the shiphandler's subjective evaluation increases in the designed channel under the designed environmental condition. $\circled2$ In the straight area, not the bend of the designed channel, maneuvering difficulty increases sharply under the environmental condition of current and wind coming from the stern.

The findings were as follows : (1) The frequencies of stress levels, work difficulties, vessel controllability and overall workload of shiphandlers are similar irrespective of environmental conditions and they are able to be represented as shiphandler's subjective evaluation. (2) It s possible to assess and analyze theoretically the correlation between the shiphandler's subjective evaluation and maneuvering risk under each environmental condition by quantifying the data obtained from the test. The results are as follows : ① As the degree of maneuvering risk increases, the shiphandler's subjective evaluation increases sharply near the curvature area of the designed channel. ② In the area of the curvature of the designed channel, maneuvering risk sincreases sharply with the danger of running aground under the environmental condition of current and wind coming from the stern.

  • 이 연구의 최종 목적은 PC를 이용하여 저가이면서 작동이 용이한 가상현실기반 선박조종 시뮬레이터를 개발하는데 있다. 이 논문에서는 가상 항해공간에 구축한 3차원 선박 객체를 선박조종계수로 제어하는 절차와 방법을 기술했다. 가상 항해세계 창출, 선박조종의 수학적 배경, 시스템 구성 둥에 대해서도 검토하였다.
