A Study on Course Stability in Accordance with Configuration of Ships (선형에 따른 선박의 침로 안정성에 관한 연구)

  • Ship's maneuverability is very important factor in safe ship handling and economical ship operation. Steering characteristics are consisted of course stability and maneuverability. Today in many advanced ship-building countries, they study ship's course stability, using model ship tests, such as straight line tests, rotating arm tests and Planar Motion Mechanism (PMM) etc., in tow in tanks. It is the purpose of this paper to provide ship's handlers with better understanding of steering characteristics and to help them in safe controlling and manevering . In this paper, the author simulated response of various vessels, running straight course with constant speed, and they are disturbed by small external disturbance of one degree yaw angle with no angular velocity . The author used the hydrodynamic derivtives resulted at tests of Davidson's laboratory in Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, U.S.A. Course stability was evaluated and analyzed in various respects, such as block coefficient, ratio of ship's length to beam, draft and rudder area ratio etc. The obtained results are as follows : (1) The ship's course stability is affected by magnitude of block coefficient greatly. In case that the block coefficient is more than 0.7, the deviation varies at nearly same rate but the requistite time to reach the steady course is different. (2) The ship's course stability is affected by magnitude of L/B. When the dimensionless time reaches about 3, the deviation and requisite time to reach the steady course are influenced nearly same. After the dimensionless time is about 3, they change on invariable ratio. (3) The effect to course stability by L/T and RA' can be neglected. (4) The reason why thy VLCC and container feeder vessel are unstable on their course is that their block coefficient is generally more than 0.8 and the ratio of ship's length to beam is about 6.0.

Collision-Damage Analysis of a Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Considering Ship-Collision Risk

  • As the number of offshore wind-power installations increases, collision accidents with vessels occur more frequently. This study investigates the risk of collision damage with operating vessels that may occur during the operation of an offshore wind turbine. The floater used in the collision study is a 15 MW UMaine VolturnUS-S (semi-submersible type), and the colliding ships are selected as multi-purpose vessels, service operation vessels, or anchor-handling tug ships based on their operational purpose. Collision analysis is performed using ABAQUS and substantiation is performed via a drop impact test. The collision analyses are conducted by varying the ship velocity, displacement, collision angle, and ship shape. By applying this numerical model, the extent of damage and deformation of the collision area is confirmed. The analysis results show that a vessel with a bulbous bow can cause flooding, depending on the collision conditions. For damage caused by collision, various collision angles must be considered based on the internal stiffener arrangement. Additionally, the floater can be flooded with relatively small collision energy when the colliding vessel has a bulbous bow.

  • A mis-handling of the ship operators, treated as one qf the main causes of a ship accidents, normally has caused a ship to collide with obstacles like a reef, a rock and other ships etc. since their ability has been declining little by little even though the port conditions have been getting worse. The ship needs a highly sophisticated technology as her size and speed increase as the ship have been demanded. For example, Auto Avoidance Control System gradually has been receiving a growing interest to control the entire ship safely. From that purpose, this research has been done. The research was based on the MMG mathematical model, used Surge-Sway-Yaw-Roll motion equation and Fuzzy theory for calculating the collision-risk Also the research successively was done when the ship encountered continual multitude ships.

  • According to the recent presentation by the Korean Maritime Safety Tribunal, about 70% of marine accident occurs from fishing vessel, and 90% of cause of entire marine accidents attributes to human error. As fishing vessels require basic operations, fishing operations, other additional operations and techniques such as fish handling, cultivating excellent marine officer to prevent marine accident and develop industry is very important. A fisheries training ship is still very difficult to satisfy the demand for diversity of fishery training and sense of realism of the industry. As the result of employment expectation by category of business survey targeting 266 marine industry high school graduates who hope to board fishing vessels for the last four years, tuna purse seine was the highest with 132 cadets (49.6%), followed by offshore large purse seine (65 cadets, 22.4%), and tuna long line (35 cadets, 13.2%). The Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology (KIMFT) has replaced old jigging and fish pot fishery training ships and proceeded developing and building multi-purpose fisheries training ships considering the demand of industry and the promotion of employment; however, the basic fishing method was set for a tuna purse seine. As a result of seakeeping model test, it can conduct the satisfiable operation at sea state 5, and survive at sea state 8.

  • So far, the port cargo handling capacity of general cargo was computed using simple formulae based on mathematical models. However, this simple calculation could not be able to reflect the reality. Thus, the simulation method was applied in this paper to overcome the limitation that the calculation method used in the past studies has. The process occurring from arrival to departure of a ship, which is reflecting the process rules of berth, was modeled to estimate the optimum level of handling capacity by using an example of the loading and unloading of an appropriated wharf at the harbor, and simulation was performed by developing the prototype. The actual processing capability of Mukho port was compared to the estimated capability calculated using the simulation method and the optimum level of capability could be computed by repeatedly simulating the input variable condition of the simulation prototype.

  • 선박의 항행안전의 문제가 중요시됨에 따라 선박조종시뮬레이터에 의한 안전성 검토의 필요성이 크게 인식되고 있다. 또한 조종성능을 향상시킬 목적으로 다양한 선종이 출현하고 있고, 이에 따라 선박조종시뮬레이터의 개발에 있어서 선박의 데이터베이스는 필수적이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 선종에 따른 수학모델을 각각 선박조종시뮬레이터에 적용시킴으로써 다양성이라는 가상현실의 잇점을 한층 부각시킬 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 우수한 추진성능을 목적으로 한 2축2타선박을 대상으로 조종운동 수학모델을 정식화하였다. 구체적으로 항만내에서의 저속시 조종운동을 구현할 수 있는 수학모델에 대해서 검토하였으며, 선체·프로펠러·타의 상호간섭에 대해서도 고려하였다. 또한, 수치시뮬레이션을 수행함으로써 2축2타선박의 기본적인 조종성능을 확인할 수 있었다.

A Study on the Resource Allocation Strategies of the Container Terminals Using Simulation Technique (시뮬레이션 기법을 이용한 컨테이너 터미널의 자원할당 전략에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents an estimation method of container handling capacity and selection of resource allocation strategies of container terminals using the computer simulation models. Simulation models are developed to model container terminal consisting of 4 berths considering the berth allocation strategies, crane allocation strategies and the total number of container cranes using Arena simulation package. The proposed models do not consider the yard operations and gate operations. All the input parameters for the models are estimated on the basis of the existing container terminal operation data and the planning data for the automated container terminal planned by Korean government. Four berth allocation strategies and three crane allocation strategies are considered. The total number of container cranes considered ranges from 12 to 15. Non-terminating simulation techniques are utilized for the performance comparison among alternatives. The performance measures such as average ship turnaround time, average ship waiting time, average ship service time, the number of containers handled per year, and the number of ships processed per year are used. The result shows that the berth allocation strategy minimizing the sum of the number of ships waiting, the number of busy container cranes and number of ships handled performs better than any other berth allocation strategies. In addition, the crane allocation strategy allocating up to 5 container cranes per berth performs better than any other crane allocation strategies. Finally there are no significant performance differences among the alternatives consisting of different total number of container cranes allocated.

Analysis of Stem Wave due to Long Breakwaters at the Entrance Channel

  • Recently, a new port reserves deep water depth for safe navigation and mooring, following the trend of larger ship building. Larger port facilities include long and huge breakwaters, and mainly adopt vertical type considering low construction cost. A vertical breakwater creates stem waves combining inclined incident waves and reflected waves, and this causes maneuvering difficulty to the passing vessels, and erosion of shoreline with additional damages to berthing facilities. Thus, in this study, the researchers have investigated the response of stem waves at the vertical breakwater near the entrance channel and applied numerical models, which are commonly used for the analysis of wave response at the harbor design. The basic equation composing models here adopted both the linear parabolic approximation adding the nonlinear dispersion relationship and nonlinear parabolic approximation adding a linear dispersion relationship. To analyze the applicability of both models, the research compared the numerical results with the existing hydraulic model results. The gap of serial breakwaters and aligned angles caused more complicated stem wave generation and secondary stem wave was found through the breakwater gap. Those analyzed results should be applied to ship handling simulation studies at the approaching channels, along with the mooring test.

Detection of Ship Movement Anomaly using AIS Data: A Study (AIS 데이터 분석을 통한 이상 거동 선박의 식별에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) coverage has expanded to include coastal areas following the increased attention on vessel traffic safety. However, it has increased the workload on the VTS operators. In some cases, when the traffic volume increases sharply during the rush hour, the VTS operator may not be aware of the risks. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a new method to recognize ship movement anomalies automatically to support the VTS operator's decision-making. The proposed method generated traffic pattern model without any category information using the unsupervised learning algorithm.. The anomaly score can be calculated by classification and comparison of the trained model. Finally, we reviewed the experimental results using a ship-handling simulator and the actual trajectory data to verify the feasibility of the proposed method.

Export Container Remarshaling Planning in Automated Container Terminals Considering Time Value (시간가치를 고려한 자동화 컨테이너 터미널의 수출 컨테이너 이적계획)

  • A remarshalling is one of the operational strategies considered importantly at a port container terminal for the fast ship operations and heighten efficiency of slacking yard. The remarshalling rearranges the containers scattered at a yard block in order to reduce the transfer time and the rehandling time of container handling equipments. This Paper deals with the rearrangement problem, which decides to where containers are transported considering time value of each operations. We propose the mixed integer programming model minimizing the weighted total operation cost. This model is a NP-hard problem. Therefore we develope the heuristic algorithm for rearrangement problem to real world adaption. We compare the heuristic algorithm with the optimum model in terms of the computation times and total cost. For the sensitivity analysis of configuration of storage and cost weight, a variety of scenarios are experimented.
