Study of Harmonic Suppression of Ship Electric Propulsion Systems

  • This paper studies the harmonic characteristics of ship electric propulsion systems and their treatment methods. It also adopts effective measures to suppress and prevent ship power systems from affecting ship operation due to the serious damage caused by harmonics. Firstly, the harmonic characteristics of a ship electric propulsion system are reviewed and discussed. Secondly, aiming at problems such as resonant frequency and filter characteristics variations, resonance point migration, and unstable filtering performances in conventional passive filters, a method for fully tuning of a passive dynamic tunable filter (PDTF) is proposed to realize harmonic suppression. Thirdly, to address the problems of the uncontrollable inductance L of traditional air gap iron core reactors and the harmonics of power electronic impedance converters (PEICs), this paper proposes an electromagnetic coupling reactor with impedance transformation and harmonic suppression characteristics (ECRITHS), with the internal filter (IF) designed to suppress the harmonics generated by PEICs. The ECRITHS is characterized by both harmonic suppression and impedance change. Fourthly, the ECRITHS is investigated. This investigation includes the harmonic suppression characteristics and impedance transformation characteristics of the ECRITHS at the fundamental frequency, which shows the good performance of the ECRITHS. Simulation and experimental evaluations of the PDTF are carried out. Multiple PDTFs can be configured to realize multi-order simultaneous dynamic filtering, and can effectively eliminate the current harmonics of ship electric propulsion systems. This is done to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the supply currents to well below the 5% limit imposed by the IEEE-519 standard. The PDTF also can eliminate harmonic currents in different geographic places by using a low voltage distribution system. Finally, a detailed discussion is presented, with challenges and future implications discussed. The research results are intended to effectively eliminate the harmonics of ship electric power propulsion systems and to improve the power quality of ship power systems. This is of theoretical and practical significance for improving the power quality and power savings of ship power systems.

  • A small, highly-trained crew working on the ship's automation has contributed to the improvement of operation efficiency and the labor environment on board ship. However, at the same time, having a small crew adds more responsibility to the ship's officers to safely operate and manage the ship. Recently, development on the system to concentrate important information being scattered at the various pieces of navigational equipment has been actively studied, using information and computer technology. The purpose of this study is to set up and implement an integrated marine data networking and communication system on the training-research ship. Information relating to navigation, engine and office automation were investigated and analyzed, and implementation methods associated with navigation, engine and the management information system were designed and presented. In addition, the networking system and navigational signal interface unit for the integrated communication system, and the data communication method between the ship and land are also discussed.

  • This paper deals with the automation techniques of ship assembly drawing generation, which help the designer to reduce the man-hour for completing the drawings, and improve the quality of the drawing for the given time. The automation techniques are necessary for the reasons of economical efficiency and improve communication between the designers and shop-makers. The overlap-avoidance algorithm of this paper maximizes the readability of the drawings using the optimization techniques and the heuristic rules, especially for the ship assembly field.

  • With the development of the 4th industry, the logistics industry is evolving into a smart logistics system. However, ship work that transports vehicles is progressing slowly due to various problems. In this paper, we propose an stowage automation algorithm that can be used for cargo loading of vehicle carriers that shortens loading and unloading work time. The stowage automation algorithm returns the shortest distance by searching for a loading space and a movable path in the ship in consideration of the structure of the ship. The algorithm identifies walls, ramps and vehicles that have already been shipped, and can work even with randomly placed. In particular, it is expected to contribute to developing a smart logistics system for vehicle carriers by referring to the ship's master plan to search for vehicle loading and unloading space in each port and predict the shortest movable path.

  • The development of hull curved plate forming automation system in ship production field begins from the need of stakeholders such as enterprise organization, who need the reduction of cost and time and improvement of productivity, and end users who work for this production process. Even though hull curved plate forming automation system has small scale, it is reasonable to consider the system as an interdisciplinary system, because the system includes all of hardware, software, human and information and has a specified objective to be performed. In this paper, introduction of 4 leading Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)methodologies is described and SysML(Systems Modeling Language), which is designed to analyze, specify, design, and verify complex systems, is introduced in order to support those methodologies. Especially, SysML is applied to system modeling of hull curved plate forming automation system and focused on. The structure diagrams and behavior diagrams based on operational context of the automation system are used to make system architecture. The performed application of SysML to the hull curved plate forming automation system shows an example of applying SysML to the development of other autonomous systems in ship production domain.

Intelligent Steering Control System Based on Voice Instructions

  • The important field of research in ship operation is related to the high efficiency of transportation, the convenience of maneuvering ships and the safety of navigation. For these purposes, many intelligent technologies for ship automation have been required and studied. In this paper, we propose an intelligent voice instruction-based learning (VIBL) method and discuss the building of a ship's steering control system based on this method. The VIBL system concretely consists of two functions: a text conversion function where an instructor's inputted voice is recognized and converted to text, and a linguistic instruction based learning function where the text instruction is understood through a searching process of given meaning elements. As a study method, the fuzzy theory is adopted to build maneuvering models of steersmen and then the existing LIBL is improved and combined with the voice recognition technology to propose the VIBL. The ship steering control system combined with VIBL is tested in a ship maneuvering simulator and its validity is shown.

  • The measurement in the manufacturing process of curved ship hull plates still depends on wooden templates as a standard instrument. The metrology-enabled automation in the shipbuilding process has been challenged instead of line measurement with wooden templates. The developed measurement system consists of a CCD camera, multiple structured laser sources and 3-DOF motion device. The system carries out measurement of curved profiles for large scale plates by an optical triangulation method. The results of experiment conducted in a manufacturing shop demonstrate the accurate and robust performance.

  • Generally, ships have marks of various shapes on outside of the hull. Among them, so called "Draft Mark" indicates the distance from the bottom of the keel to the waterline. Draft marks are used to determine the displacement and other properties of the ship for stability and control purposes. These marks are made up of welding bead or sticking the steel plate on outside of the hull. To improve the confidence level of the ship owner, quality and accuracy of the draft mark is very important. So the automatic mark welding robot is used to enable a high quality and accurate manufacturing line. To improve the system portability, the system is divided into two distinct parts, namely mechanical part and control part. Mechanical part is robust, a lightweight, and easy to dismantle. The control part consists of an in-house developed controller, which is based on embedded Linux. Also, the control part consists of power line communication module to ensure the applicability of the controller in manufacturing line. In this paper, the methodologies of control and configuration of the robot are discussed.
