Despite it's limitations, the existing Stream Line Tracing Method(Inverse Method) can be applied effectively to the design of better hull forms with practical proportions. Most of the calculating mechanism by the method for hull form design has been achieved. In this paper, authors have tried to improve the quality of wave making resistance on the 10,000GT liner among FY'67 Korean Standard Ship Form. Some numerical results obtained in this work and designed new lines are shown.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), one of ubiquitous organic pollutants in marine environments, are major toxic components of petroleum and are produced during the incomplete combustion of organic materials. As shipyards are located inside of natural or artificial semi-enclosed bay, even a relatively weak environmental disturbance by ship-building activity can cause severe damage to marine ecosystem in the bay. Many studies of pollution in shipyard area have been focused on the antifouling agent, like tributyltin. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ship-building activity on PAH contamination. Total PAHs concentration was higher nearby and inside shipyard area than outside, implying that shipyard could be one of major source area of PAH contamination to pose harmful effects to surrounding environments. Through PAH profile and source recognition index, the source of PAHs inputs in this area was estimated to originate from both petrogenic and pyrogenic origin. PAH levels showed a significant correlation with total butyltins, indicating that ship-building activity influenced PAH concentration and distribution. Vertical distribution of PAHs historically confirmed the correlation between shipbuilding activity and PAHs contamination.
This paper aims at investigation some operating characteristics and energy usage efficiency of a induction motor and a BLDC motor considering electric propulsion system in a small ship based on battery source. At first, performance curves of discharge voltage from the battery and current from each motor according to the load variations were analyzed. Next, variations of motor torque and rotational speed versus load change at each motor were analyzed. Finally, efficiency of energy usage of the battery and available navigation distance were compared each other. Through some comparisons and analyses, it was cleared that the BLDC motor is more suitable for the motor of the electric propulsion system in small ships based on battery source. It is expected that the results can be used as useful data for design of the electric propulsion system with batteries.
'Kite' is a newly developed single-channel seismic imaging system capable of producing high resolution three dimensional images of subbottom geology in one traverse of a survey region. The system consists of a horizontally towed hydrophone array and active source. The hydrophone array is towed axis perpendicular to ship direction and the airgun source at the end of the hydrophone array is excited at timed intervals during the progression. The construction of the three dimensional subbottom image was made simply by using conventional multichannel seismic reflection data processing techniques. Common source shot (CSS) gathers of the hydrophone traces are evaluated using Dix's equation for average interval velocity of each subbottom layer. From the interval velocity profile and the normal consolidation stress condition, values of shear modulus, porosity, and shear velocity are deduced from the chosen values of physical constants. The system has been successfully tested at several locations on the North Atlantic continental shelf.
To design very large ships, such as very large drillships, we have to estimate the hydroelastic responses of the very large ships in waves. A numerical procedure is described for estimating the hydroelastic responses of very large ships advancing with slow speed in waves. The developed numerical approach is based on a combination of the three-dimensional source distribution method and the finite element method, including fluid-structure interaction by regarding a very large ship as many hull elements connected with elastic beam elements. Numerical results are compared with experimental and numerical ones obtained in the literature. The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.
The variation in the course keeping ability in relation to rudder type is investigated using simulations with 3 different types of rudders (a normal rudder, normal rudder with a plate, and Schilling rudder) under wave conditions. The simulation is developed based on an MMG model with Kijima's regression model, along with the data from Son's experiments and Kose's experiments. A 3-D source distribution method is applied to calculate the source of the external wave forces for the simulation. The coefficients of an autopilot controller that may affect the course keeping ability are also estimated from the simulations with the different rudders. The course keeping ability is evaluated by comparing the forward distances while the ships are simulated with the rudders and autopilot controller.
This paper describes the improvement of power control characteristics of ship's emergency lighting power supply(SELPS), by which electric power is controlled extensively, and power ON-OFF is controlled and system parameter monitored in remote distance by PC serial communication. Proposed system is composed of step-down converter(SDC), emergency power supply circuit(EPSC), half bridge(HB) inverter, fluorescent lamp(FL) starting circuit, microprocessor control and multi communication circuit. Experimental works confirm that relative system stops when over current is detected and speedy and stable emergency power is supplied when main power source cut-off, and controls input power up to 35[$\%$] by adjusting pulse frequency of the HB inverter, and ON-OFF control of multiple SELS, real time transmission and monitor of parameters as to voltage, current, and power values are performed appropriately by PC communication.
The main objective of this study was to analyse polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments obtained from near Nakdong estuary, and to estimate ecological risks of PAHs using PAHs concentrations. The main constituents of sediments were $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO, $Fe_2O_3$, and ignition loss of sediments ranged from 2.97% and 8.39%. Total concentrations of PAHs ranged from $128.4ng\;g^{-1}$ and $507.4ng\;g^{-1}$, and the major PAHs were 2 ring and 4 ring aromatic hydrocarbons. Each concentrations of PAHs are all below effect range low, which indicated that each PAHs in 8 studying sites show low ecological risk. From M-ERM-Q analyses, M-ERM-Q values of 8 studying sites are below 0.1 indicating low ecological risk. From source apportionment analyses, PAHs come from grass, wood, charcoal combustion for N-1 and N-7, petroleum combustion for N-5 and N-6, petroleum pollution for N-2, N-3, N-4, N-8.
This paper describes a design of several ship's emergency lighting system(SELS) that power factor is improved and power is controlled extensively, and techniques to control and monitor this system in remote distance by PC serial communication. The remote monitoring control system is composed of emergency power supply system (EPSS), half bridge(HB)inverter, fluorescent lamp(FL), microprocessor, multi communication interface. EPSS checks the voltage of the emergency backup battery in real time. In case that the voltage of 13[V] or less has been detected for 5[msec] or longer for 3 times in a row, charger circuit is connected for battery charging. Experimental works using proposed system confirm that speedy and stable power to be supplied when main power source cut-off, compared with conventional analog type, and input power up to 35.0[%] by adjusting of pulse frequency of the HB inverter.
In order to minimize carbon emissions and greenhouse gas, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) has become a major factor to be considered in recent years in a ship's design and operation phases. Energy-Saving Devices (ESDs) improve the EEDI of a vessel and make them environmentally friendly. In this research, the performance of an equalizing duct-type ESD installed upstream of a Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) Container Ship (KCS) model's propeller was investigated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Open-source CFD libraries, OpenFOAM, were used for computational analysis of the KCS with and without the ESD to verify the performance improvement. The flow field near the stern region and propulsive coefficients were considered for comparison. The results showed a considerable improvement when an ESD was used on the model. Using different sizes of the duct, the performance of the ESD was also compared. It was observed that with an increased duct size, the propulsive performance was improved.
