도서 지역 주민의 암 조기검진과 영향요인 (Cancer Screening and Influencing Factors in a Island Residents)

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the cancer screening rates and influence factors in island residents. Methods: The participants were 1,223 Shinan gun island residents. Data were collected using structured questionnaires from June 23th to September 8th, 2007 and analyzed using the SAS win 12.0 program. Results: The cancer screening rate was 49.9%. There were significant differences for sex, age, living with family, economic level, smoking, exercise, private health insurance, familial history, health concern. The highest practice rate was of stomach cancer (55.9%), which is gastric endoscopic exam. The most common motivation of getting a screening test was the concern of health (40.8%), and many had no recommender of the screening test (30.0%). 58.4% of the subjects were satisfied with the screeing tests and the most frequent reason of the satisfaction was 'rapid result report' (33.1%). The msot common reason of unsatisfaction was 'long waiting time' (25.7%). Most participants agreed with the necessity of cancer screening (74.9%). More than half participants said they would participate in another cancer screening tests in the future (51.9%). Private health insurance, exercise, health concern and smoking showed significant predictors (20.6%) of obtaining cancer screening. Conclusion: The results suggest that health care professionals should give more attention to help the residents obtain cancer screening tests. A further study is necessary to develop any effective intervention for people who do not practice cancer screening tests.

Floristic study of Jang-do (Isl.) in Korea

  • We investigated the flora of Jang-do (Isl.), an island of the Heuksan archipelago, located in Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do and discussed the remarkable plants found there. Thirteen-field trips (total 27 days) were completed from May of 2004 to May of 2013. As a result, we identified the distribution of 423 taxa in Jang-do (Isl.), comprising 104 families, 285 genera, 335 species, 78 varieties and 10 forms. There are a total of 95 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants. The floristic regional indicators are as follows; four taxa of level V such as Impatiens furcillata, four taxa of level IV such as Hosta yingeri, 14 taxa of level III such as Ophioglossum vulgatum, 5 taxa of level II, and 58 taxa of level I. In addition 10 red data plants, 2 vulnerable species (VU) including Calanthe striata for. sieboldii, and 4 least concern species (LC) like Ardisia crenata, 2 not evaluated species (NE) such as Hosta yingeri, were found in the investigated area. An unrecorded species, Fragaria (Rosaceae), was found in a forest of Jang-do (Isl.) for the first time in Korea.

Prunus glandulosa Thunb.(Rosaceae) and its distribution on the Korean Peninsula

  • Prunus glandulosa Thunb. [=Cerasus glandulosa (Thunb.) Sokolov] (Rosaceae) is native to the warmtemperate region of China (Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Henan, Jiangsu, Shaanxi, Shandong, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Zhejiang Provinces). It is naturalized in the United States (i.e. Alabama, Michigan and North Carolina) and Canada (Ontario). This species, previously only recorded as introduced or cultivated plants on the Korean Peninsula, was confirmed to be naturally distributed in the southwestern coast islands(i.e. Geomun-do, Chuja-do and an uninhabited island in Shinan-gun of Jeollanam-do). Prunus glandulosa Thunb. is distinguished from a related taxon P. japonica var. nakaii (H. Lév.) Rehder by pedicel 8-12 (-16) mm long, linear stipules, glabrous style, and pink petals. The morphological characters and illustration of P. glandulosa Thunb. are provided with line drawings and photographs from the natural habitat. In addition, it is likely that a new habitat will be found by plant biodiversity investigations through the southwestern coast islands. Further research is needed to determine its population size, distribution, and threats, as well as identify appropriate locations for conservation collection of germplasm.

한국의 치과의료 취약지역 현황 분석 (A study on the status of dental underserved areas in Korea)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the status of dental care in underserved areas of Korea. Methods: This study targeted 229 cities in Korea. The analytical index was revised and supplemented with variables related to dental care, and the "oral health level" indexes were further selected to provide a total of 20 analytical indexes. All selected indexes were converted into T scores (cited by the Korea Health Promotion Institute) and subjectively weighted. Finally, the regional oral health indices and areas were derived. PASW Statistics 25.0 (SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL, USA) was used to analyze descriptive statistics. Results: Gyeongbuk Cheongsong-gun had the highest dental underserved index. The city with the highest regional oral health underserved index was Jeonnam Shinan-gun. Daegu Jung-gu had the lowest dental underserved index and regional oral health underserved index. Regional gaps existed between dental care and the regional oral health underserved index according to the city province (p<0.001). Conclusions: To continuously evaluate oral health conditions and projects centered on vulnerable areas, it is necessary to develop indicators to derive vulnerable areas for dental care and to develop effective public dental policies.

임자도 지역의 식물상 (Floristic study of Imja-do (Isl.))

  • 전라남도 신안군 임자면에 속하는 임자도의 관속식물상을 조사하고 분포가 확인된 주요 식물들에 대하여 논의하였다. 1997년 8월부터 2009년 10월까지 총 24회 100일의 현지조사가 이루어졌다. 그 결과 총 115과 338속 467종 2아종 62변종 1품종 532분류군의 분포가 확인되었다. 식물구계학적 특정식물은 모두 78종이 확인되었는데, 땅귀개를 비롯한 V등급종이 4분류군, IV등급인 층층고랭이, 상동잎쥐똥나무 2분류군, III등급종인 쥐꼬리풀 등 14분류군, II등급종으로 애기우산나물 등 3분류군, I등급종으로는 병아리꽃나무 등 55분류군이 조사되었다. 또한 멸종위기 II등급종으로 애기등이 조사되었다. 한편, 위기종(EN)인 좀어리연꽃 1종, 취약종(VU)인 호랑가시나무 등 5종, 약관심종(LC)인 이삭귀개 등 3종의 희귀식물의 자생지를 확인하였다. 식물지리학적 분포 유형을 보면 대륙에서 남하한 북방계, 히말라야에서 동진한 히말라야계, 남방계, 동아시아 고유분화계로 나뉘었다.

농촌지역 일차건강관리 기관의 고혈압환자 관리실태 -전남지역을 중심으로- (The control of the hypertension in rural primary health care settings in Korea)

  • The control of the chronic degenerative diseases becomes a challenge in Korea as the aging of the population progresses. Accordingly, the importance of the control of the hypertension, one of the major chronic degenerative diseases, in the primary health care settings increases. However, such control activities are still minimal. This study gives brief description of how the rural residents who are currently registered for the control of the hypertension feel about the activities of the health centers, subcenters and the CHP posts, in relation to the control of the hypertension. We also describe the knowledge and practice of the registered hypertensive. In general, the knowledge, the acceptance and the satisfaction of the respondents about the hypertension control activities were not very high. Respondents being managed by the health center showed the highest knowledge, acceptance and satisfaction, and those being managed by the subcenters ranked lowest. The knowledge about the hypertension was not satisfactory. There were great variations among the items in terms of the proportion answered correctly. As many as 60% of the respondents take medication regularly but only 4.5% were practicing weight control regularly. Despite some limitations of the study, the results can be very useful for those planning hypertension control programs. The educational materials and the dietary protocols need to be developed in accordance with the regional social and food pattern, so that they can be utilized with minimal modification for each beneficiary. We also suggest to minimize the area a health personnel covers. In other word, running several small health posts at village level would be more effective than running a subcenter at the township level, in terms of the hypertension control.

사수도에 번식하는 슴새의 둥지 사용률의 변화 및 집쥐의 포식률 (Variation in Breeding Burrows of Streaked Shearwaters Breeding in Sasu Island, and Predation Rates by Norway Rats)

  • The seabird plays an important role as one of the indicator species for the status of and changes within marine ecosystems. Therefore, the conservation of seabirds and their habitats is important for maintaining the structure and function of marine ecosystems. Biological invasions affect most ecosystems on oceanic islands. In particular, Rattus spp. is the invasive species with the greatest impact on the seabird population. Introduced predators, like rats, severely affect seabirds and endanger them worldwide. The breeding population of Streaked Shearwaters Calonectris leucomelas in Sasu Island is one of biggest seabird colonies in Korea, and the Norway Rat Rattus norvegicus is known as an alien predator in this island. In this study we investigated rates of burrow occupancy and breeding success of Streaked Shearwaters for 7 years, and the impact of Norway Rats on the breeding success of Streaked Shearwaters breeding in Sasu Island for 4 years. Our results show that the percentage of breeding burrows decreased according to breeding stage during several years in the monitoring period, and that predation by the Norway Rat was the main cause in hatching failures. Consequently, although our results indicate that their breeding population is not likely to decline, Norway Rats have been affecting the breeding status of Streaked Shearwaters on Sasu Island during the last decade.

전남 신안군의 토지이용에 따른 생태계서비스 가치와 지속가능한 활용방안 (The Value of Ecosystem Services based on Land Use in Shinangun, Jeonnam, Korea)

  • 전라남도는 우리나라에서 50% 이상을 차지하는 섬과 갯벌을 가지고 있다. 특히 그중에서도 신안군은 가장 많은 섬 개수와 넓은 갯벌을 차지하고 있다. 신안군은 2개읍, 12면으로 구성되어 있고 약 1,000여개의 유 무인도 섬들이 산재해 있다. 섬과 갯벌이라는 독특한 생태계 특성을 가진 신안군의 생태계서비스 가치를 Costanza et al. (1997)의 생물군계에 의해 계산하였다. 신안군은 갯벌이 가장 높은 생태계서비스 가치를 나타내었다. 이러한 결과는 대부분의 섬에서 같은 결과를 보였고 특히 압해읍과 지도읍이 가장 높은 값을 보였다. 증도면의 경우에는 실제적으로 군내에서는 면적이 11위에 해당하지만 생태계서비스 가치는 전체에서 4위를 나타내었다. 현재까지의 연구 상황으로는 정확하게 생태계서비스 가치를 계산하는 것이 어렵지만 대략의 가치라도 측정해 보는 것도 중요하다고 판단된다. 신안군 전체의 생태계 서비스 가치를 살펴봄으로써 현재 가지고 있는 가치를 잘 보전하고 지속적으로 활용하기 위한 정책에 활용하는 것이 필요하다. 특히 갯벌이라는 독특한 생태계를 잘 보전하고 이를 올바르게 활용할 수 있는 시스템 구축이 절실하다. 이 결과를 바탕으로 앞으로 신안군 발전계획 등의 정책결정에 좋은 자료를 제공하고자 한다.

신안군 임자도의 귀화식물 분포 변화에 관한 생태학적 연구 (Ecological Studies on the Changes of Community of Naturalized Plants in Limja Island, Shinan Gun)

  • 본 조사는 해안 도서지방인 신안군 임자도를 중심으로 이 지역에 분포하는 귀화식물상과 주요군락의 변화에 대하여 조사하였다. 조사된 귀화식물은 1999년에는 14과(科) 45종(種), 2005년에는 14과(科) 54종(種)이 조사되었다. 그 결과 본 조사에서 능수참새그령, 들묵새, 미국개기장, 창명아주, 유럽점나도나물, 어저귀, 비짜루국화, 큰금계국, 노랑코스모스 등 9종이 추가로 조사되었다. 귀화식물군락은 군락조성표에 따라서 미국자리공군락, 개보리군락, 개망초-망초군락, 달맞이꽃군락, 물참새군락, 들묵새군락, 노랑코스모스군락으로 분류되었으며 주요군락의 분포면적이 변화하고 있었다. 이러한 귀화식물군락의 주요 분포지역은 귀화식물의 서식지 특성상 인가와 도로주변의 인위적인 영향을 많이 받고 있는 지역을 중심으로 군락을 이루고 있었다.

Survey of Gymnophalloides seoi Metacercariae in Natural and Cultured Oysters from Several Western Coastal Areas, Korea

  • Gymnophalloides seoi (Digenea: Gymnophallidae) is a human intestinal trematode contracted by eating raw oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in the Republic of Korea (=Korea). It has been known to be highly endemic in Aphae Island, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Province). However, recent epidemiological status of G. seoi has not been reported since the 1990s. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of G. seoi metacercariae in natural and cultured oysters collected from 3 islands and 2 coastal areas in western parts of Korea. The oysters were examined using the artificial digestion method followed by stereomicroscopy. The overall positive rate of G. seoi metacercariae in natural oysters was 66.0% (99/150), and the oysters collected from Yubu Island showed the highest infection rate (74.0%). However, the metacercarial density per oyster was relatively low (1.5-2.4 per oyster). By contrast, no metacercaria was found in cultured oysters purchased from 2 coastal areas in Chungcheongnam-do. Thus, we could confirm that natural oysters produced from 3 western coastal islands are infected with G. seoi metacercariae, whereas cultured oysters purchased from 2 coastal areas were free from infection.
