  • This is a study on Sil-Sil and Chun. Sil-Sil is a kind of turquoise. According to its burial place and use its identity was fixed, It was discovered in the Middle-East Asia like Iran and Tibet, Ancient China imported turquoise from these countries,. Korea also imported it in Shilla period. It was the empresses only who had the priviledge of using Sil-Sil for their ornaments such as hair-pins headdresses and combs. Chun was a sort of metal ornaments. Chun required a high-skilled work' and it showed how advanced its skill at that time.

  • This study analyzes traditional form and figurative characteristics of Ottchil Painting based on objective relics about long lasted Ottchil Painting and related literature as our country's national culture. Study range is among Lolang (Nangnang), Three Kingdom Dynastys (Koguryo, Baekje and Shilla), Unified Shilla Dynasty, Koryo Dynasty, Joseon Dynasty, Modern times and Contemporary. The method of study is after theoretical consideration of Ottchil Painting through related literature, adduced figurative characteristics of related Ottchil Painting by time period with case-study methods such as excavated relics and historical basis. Ottchil Painting consists of color, which is derived from Ottchil mixed with a mineral pigment of powder and various patterns and drawings using different techniques. The methods of Ottchil Painting are Myohoi, Yanggam, Gakhoik, Younma, Balsoa and Toiso. The techniques of Ottchil Painting of our country is established by splendid and unique for about 1,600 years revolved around Myochilchaehoi technique and Myoyuchaehoi technique started at Unified Shill a Daynasty and through Koryo, Joseon Dynasty, Modern times and Contemporary. Also, such this Ottchil Painting form of red in the inside and black in the outside, which is wood based, the rest is bamboo sheath and framework from Geonchil based and the figurative characteristics presented the traditional Patterns of Lotus, Phoenix, arabesque, bird, animal, cloud, marble and letter with red Ottchil, yellow Ottchil, or five colors Ottchil.

A Study on the Transfer of Korean Sang(Skirts) to Japan and its Changes (한국 상(裳)의 일본 전파와 변천에 관한 연구)

  • This study proved that Japanese skirt(裳 'sang') during 5-8 century was introduced by korean emigrants. The skirt of the Tang dynasty(7C) which used to be worn among Japanese upper class in the Nara period(8C),is understood to be transferred through Korean as it was popularly worn in the Shilla Dynasty at the same time. Because Japan was not able to trade with Tang during 4-9 century, unless pass through the Korean peninsular, it suggests that Japanese costume was affected by Korean style of costume. At the later Heian period in Japan, Kosode was mainly worn among Japanese and wearing a skirt has to be abandoned. Instead, only the train, a part of skirt, remain as a decorative part on the back of Japanese woman's formal dress and it continued until now.

A Starting Point of Formation and Development of Baekje-style Stone Stupa (백제양식석탑의 형성과 전개의 시발점(始發點))

  • The stone stupas of the Mireuk Temple Site and Jeongnim Temple Site were the beginning of Korean stone stupa and the unique ones stemming from the Baeje period. Therefore, the work of investigating the characteristics of these two stone stupas would give us a basis for understanding Korean stone stupas in a large scale and Baekje-style stone stupas in a narrow sense. As shown in some records, the excellent architectural skills of Baekje could be known by the fact that Abiji was invited to the building of Hwangryong Wooden stupa, one of the national undertakings of Shilla and the skills and styles related to stone stupas were thought to be disseminated in this process. However, it has not been very convincing that the stone stupas with Baekje styles were disconnected in an instant with the unification of Shilla, in terms that culture and art would inherited and developed. The current academic circle set a frame and defined all these types of stone stupas as Baekje-system stone stupas built in Goryeo period and put them in a uniformly chronological order. The popularization of Buddhism, support of regionally powerful clans and cultural revival were suggested as the factors of their appearance, but it seemed difficult to be assured that these led Baeje-style stone stupas to reappear in a moment by breaking the gap of about 300 years. Of course, it has not been active in Gyeongju area, but they have greatly influenced the stone stupas of Shilla; therefore, it would be possible to consider that they were developed but limited to certain areas. This study focused on the starting point of such development and investigated the formation of Baeje-style stone stupas through the stone stupas of the Mireuk Temple Site and Jeongnim Temple Site and their subsequent development through Wanggung-ri Stone Stupa.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate historical background which uses and characteristics of Korean traditional incense and how to use it in clothes. Incense was at first introduced to Korea in the period of King Nulji of Shilla dynasty. First introduction to this nation, incense was already regarded as divine. It was then developed with five main uses, tribute, fragrance, purification, anti bacteria, and cure. Incense used by fragrance and anti-bacteria in clothes. It make emit a fragrance from the clothes or decorate clothes with ornaments. Incense was also to prevent clothes or books from being damaged by insects and maintain them over a long period. It used one of the factor for beauty of costume.

  • This study aims to draw meaningful points from the Chang Po Go period in which Chang Po Go, who established an integrated logistics system while operating on the seas of three nations including Japan, China, and Shilla by taking Chunghaejin, Shilla, as a base of operations in the 9th century, and to discover the need for the construction of the logistics system in northeast Asia. Also, the study intends to propose strategies for contemporary application of the logistics system used during the Chang Po Go period, based on the modern logistics concept. As a result of specifically reviewing the lesson from the Chang Po Go period, which created a paradigm for a new cooperation in logistics, the leadership of the CEO, who is prepared with the long-term vision of Chang Po Go, the implementation of an integrated system for logistics activity, and the political support of the government for private companies, will initiate a bright outlook for the construction of the logistics system in northeast Asia, amid the growing need for cooperation in logistics among the three northeast Asian countries. In this era in which northeast Asia is emerging as the center of the world economy, the cooperative model in the logistics field, which transcended the border of Chang Po Go, who built a maritime logistics network in the 9th century, will help implement a cooperative logistics system in the northeast Asian region.

Language and History (언어와 역사)

  • The historical facts usually remain in the linguistic records. The name of a place has been considered most useful among the records. The name of a place contains lots of information which help us analyzing and explaining the historical problems. The main purpose of this thesis is to account for the relation between language and history based on the data of the name of a place with the property just mentioned above. Firstly I will estimate the territory of the former period of Paek-Che (18B.C.~475A.D.) on the basis of the distribution of the old name of a place and show that the presumed shape of the territory could prove the fact that the unification of Shilla is 'the unification of two nations' but not 'the unification of three nations' Secondly the distribution of the old name of a place can bring light on the interrelation between Paek-Che language and Kara language and help us understand the relation of neighboring countries between two nations. Thirdly we can discuss the relation between the language of the former period of Paek-Che and of the old period of Japan: that is, how the language of Paek-Che came in the Japanese language. Also, the history of cultural domination between Paek-Che and Japan could be clarified if we can prove the linguistic similarity of two nations either to be genealogical relation or to be borrowing one.

Lineage of Horse Bridle Kept in Yatsushiro Shrine in Kamishima (가미시마 야츠시로 신사(神島八代神社) 소장 재갈의 계보)

  • Yatsushiro Shrine on the island of Kamishima located in Ise Bay, Japan, contains many cultural artifacts with ancient mirrors in significant numbers. Also included among the artifacts are horse gags and reins that are clearly of the same lineage as the horse harnesses from the unified Shilla era and Goryeo era in Korean history. Type classification and position establishment were carried out on the horse reins kept in the Yatsushiro shrine, including items such as those mentioned previously. Type A horse harness can be classified into 3 types. Based on this classification scheme, the harness type in the Yatsushiro shrine was found to belong to the most recent period. The blacksmith workshop that made the harness was producing iron wares and bronze wares, and it possessed metal forging and metal casting technologies. Note, however, that it was primarily a workshop where iron wares were made. The parts that were visible from the outside when the harness was attached were made from composite bronze, and the reins and bridle linkage were made from iron. Such integration of bronze ware production techniques and iron ware production techniques was an attempt at enhancing the practicality and embellishments on the harness.

  • Through the excavated excellent articles of the Tang era, we have considered the building techniques and styles of a square pavilion, an octagonal pavilion, a miniature hill, a pond, etc., could read building techniques of the scenic structures on ancient literatures including records and additionally about their poetical life at that time and inquired into the arrangement, structure, building techniques, etc. of a miniature hill, a pond, a pavilion, a flowerplant, etc., on Nakyangmyungwonki. Thus, under the research on the private landscape architecture, especially the nobility gardening, around excavated excellent articles and literatures, 'A miniature hill(假山) and a pond for landscaping views formed the center of a garden, and additionally a pavilion was built and flowerplants were set. The miniature hill of laying stones and having a carven, steeping, stratifying, looking like dyed green and birds' singing among hills and eating water on the lakeshore${\ldots}$' was expressed. The pond of digging in the ground and conducting water had its water system developed. There were several kinds of pavilions such as 廳, 堂, 館, 亭, 臺, 樓, 閣, 榭, etc. As examples of landscaping plants, there were a bamboo, a lotus flower, a peony, aromatic trees a pine, a korean spindle tree, a big cone pine, an empress tree, a wild walnut, a peach, a plum, a Japanese apricot tree, an apricot tree, a chrysanthemum, arrowroot vines, etc. Thus, the garden of the Tang era, abundant, diverse and excellent, enjoyed the prime of the period of prosperity. Due to cultural exchange, it is supposed that the period of united Shilla of the same age would meet with the period of prosperity in the developmental history of Korea landscape, based on the nobility garden system '4 different dwelling-houses every season on a record "四節游宅"'.

The conservation for excavated objects on foundation parts of three-story stone pagoda on Kamunsa temple site (감은사지 동삼층석탑 기단부 출토 유물 보존처리)

  • Three-story Stone Pagoda(East) on Kamǔnsa temple constructed in A.D. 682 during the reign of King Shinmun-wang of the Unified Shilla period(668~935) was repaired by Cultural Properties Office in 1996. At that time, 27 objectsincluding sari case, small Buddha etc. were excavated. The 26 objects on foundation parts have been treated. Several objects were analyzed by EDXRF. As a result, the small Buddha of gilt bronze was proved to be an gold amalgam. The degree of gold purity was about 22K, and the excellence of gold-refining technique of that day was verified.
