A Study on the Wearing Styles of First Birthday Suit for Boy (남아 돌복의 착장양식에 관한 연구)

  • Dolbok, the first birthday suit, is a formal suit a person puts on for the first time after birth. It not only a symbolizes of Korean customs or traditions, but also represents transmitted ideas, values and lifestyles of Koreans. In this nation where strong preferences for son prevailed, dolbok for boy was specially important. 1.Styles of weaing Dolbok are classfied into trousers and jeogori, baeja, magoja, durumagi, jeonbok, sagyusam and yongpo styles in accordance with what kind of clothes was finally worn. 2. Accessories of dolbok for boys included dolddi, dol jumeoni, gulre, bokgeon, hogeon and tarae baeseon. 3. Dolbok of trousers and jeogori, baeja or magoja style simply consisted of 2 to 4 units of clothes. It was usually worn by ordinary people, and strongly imaged as common. Dolbok of durumagi or jeonbok style was a combination of 5 to 6 units of clothes and mainly worn by noble and royal families. It was remarkably formal, but quite brilliant. The suit for first birth anniversary which was sagyusam or yongpo was made in accordance with court rules and used by the royal family, It consisted of 7 to 8 units of clothes. Dolbok of sagyusam or yongpo style used invariable, simple patterns and colors, but had strong images of courtesy and dignity. 4. Regarding accessories of dolbok, the long-hanged goreum was a symbol of parental wishes for the $baby^{\circ}{\emptyset}s$ health and longevity and dolddi was joined by dol jumeonisymbolizing the wealth and prosperity of the baby. In addition, hogeon was a hat whose shape was the head of tiger symbolizing wishes for bravery and health and tarae beoseon was childlen's socks that had seams, symbolizing prosperity, on the fore edge. Seon for sagyusam was used as a symbol of preventing diseases or evil spirits to protect the health of the baby.

Metallurgical Observation of the Buddhist Bell of Youngmoon Mountain Sangwonsa Temple (용문산 상원사 범종의 금속학적 고찰)

  • The microstructure, chemical composition, and lead isotope ratio of the Buddhist bell of Yongmoon Mountain Sangwonsa temple, which was selected as one of the three great bells of Korea by Japanese historians, were analyzed in order to estimate the origin of the material and the time of casting. The microstructure of the temple bell was composed of a copper matrix phase with ${\alpha}$, a face centered cubit lattice structure, a ${\delta}$ phase with $Cu_{41}$ $(Sn,Ag,Sb)_{11}$ as the chemical structural formula, dispersed lead and $Cu_2S$ particles, and locally agglomerated fine particles. Through analysis of the chemical composition of the bell, a criterion (Pb: 0-3.0 wt%, Sn: 10-15 wt%) for distinguishing the bells of the Shilla dynasty from the bells of the Koryo Chosun dynasty is proposed. Examining the lead isotope ratio of $^{207}Pb/^{206}Pb$ and $^{208}Pb/^{206}Pb$ of the Buddhist bell of Sangwonsa temple proved that the bell was fabricated using raw materials in South Korea, which led to the conclusion that the bell was cast in Korea and the top board of the bell has been damaged by an unknown individual. The criteria of distinguishing the bells from the Shilla dynasty from the bells of the Koryo Chosun dynasty presented for the first time in this research is expected to aid in identifying and estimating the previously unclear production years of other bells.

  • This study analyzed and examined the entries of natural disasters recorded in Samguk-sagi in relation to the natural thoughts. In the ancient Korean view of nature thought the Unified Shilla dynasty surveyed their view on nature in terms of terrestrial upheavals. In the first place, I came to know that the important natural disasters such as droughts, floods, hails, locusts, earthquakes, thunderstroke, storms uprooting trees, tornado etc. recorded in Samguk-sagi have something in common with the entries of natural disasters in the ancient Chinese histories. Accordingly, they interpreted natural disasters in terms of good omens and heavenly punishments. The king refrained from luxurious food and drink, released prisoners or reduced their sentence as a sign of his benevolence. They thought that natural disasters were caused by the heavenly instruction due to lack of virtue on the part of the king. I think that these were acts of ritual on the part of the king as a ruler to fulfill his responsibility for a benevolent administration.

Lineage of Horse Bridle Kept in Yatsushiro Shrine in Kamishima (가미시마 야츠시로 신사(神島八代神社) 소장 재갈의 계보)

  • Yatsushiro Shrine on the island of Kamishima located in Ise Bay, Japan, contains many cultural artifacts with ancient mirrors in significant numbers. Also included among the artifacts are horse gags and reins that are clearly of the same lineage as the horse harnesses from the unified Shilla era and Goryeo era in Korean history. Type classification and position establishment were carried out on the horse reins kept in the Yatsushiro shrine, including items such as those mentioned previously. Type A horse harness can be classified into 3 types. Based on this classification scheme, the harness type in the Yatsushiro shrine was found to belong to the most recent period. The blacksmith workshop that made the harness was producing iron wares and bronze wares, and it possessed metal forging and metal casting technologies. Note, however, that it was primarily a workshop where iron wares were made. The parts that were visible from the outside when the harness was attached were made from composite bronze, and the reins and bridle linkage were made from iron. Such integration of bronze ware production techniques and iron ware production techniques was an attempt at enhancing the practicality and embellishments on the harness.

  • Trade between Korea and Quingdao, Sandongseung has been developed into Private Trade from the Tributary Trade of Silla. Today there are around 6,000 Korean Enterprises in Quingdao, being $22.5\%$ of total Quingdao trades and $60\%$ in the number of investments and monetary scale. Korea is in the first rank among Quingdao's trade parteners. Trade Dispute Settlement System, however, is still in poor condition. It should be improved for the activation of trade. The big solution is the Unification of Arbitration Procedure. For it, First, The staff of The Korean Commercial Arbitration Board should be dispatched to Quingdao Arbitration Commission. Second, there should be common arbitration rules between two institutes.(The Korean Commercial Arbitration Board and Quingdao Arbitration Commission). Third, a single arbitration panel should be made. Fourth, there should be the unification of methods in choosing the place of arbitration and arbitrators. Finally, a common arbitration institute should be installed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate historical background which uses and characteristics of Korean traditional incense and how to use it in clothes. Incense was at first introduced to Korea in the period of King Nulji of Shilla dynasty. First introduction to this nation, incense was already regarded as divine. It was then developed with five main uses, tribute, fragrance, purification, anti bacteria, and cure. Incense used by fragrance and anti-bacteria in clothes. It make emit a fragrance from the clothes or decorate clothes with ornaments. Incense was also to prevent clothes or books from being damaged by insects and maintain them over a long period. It used one of the factor for beauty of costume.

  • In this paper, based on the thought of the place, I tried to define the meaning of th place and interprete its landscape. The landscape of the mt. Toham with its Grotto-temple "Sokgulam" is the major object of it. The "matter and form" of the Sokgulam realizes the archetypal meaning of the grotto, birth or place of the birth, in a concrete picture. The aesthetics of the Sokgulam, the mater and form in the work of arts, comes out light harmonious with the elements: "grotto", the new foreign element of the architectural style and "orientation", the old domestic one of the Shilla that presented itself at the Chomsongdae, a kind of observatory. The interrelation of the old and new elements in work of the Sokgulam shows us also a thought as an opinion of the transference to say: the matter of the traditional subject, "grotto" and the form makes the abstract matter concretely in sight, by receiving the natural happening of the sunrise at the winter solstice.

  • In order to Characterizing the tea-culture of Korea, historical records for tea-culture of Korea, Japan and China were reviewed. The results were summarized as follows. 1. As for the type of tea through the history of Korea, it could be characterized as Cake-tea(餠茶) in Sam Kook dynasty, Iump-tea(硏膏茶) in Koryo dynasty and leaf tea(葉茶) in Chosun dynasty. Those were affected by Chinese and Japanese tea-culture. 2. Fashiono of tea-culture in Korea were unigue, imitative and reconstitutive. 3. It was concluded that the tea-culture in Korea might be established by the 'cult of tree' (樹木崇拜信仰) of Hwa Rang in Shilla dynasty.

  • The utilization of horticultural tools in Korea is historically viewed through limited materials. The garlic shown in the birth myth of the Korean nation appears to be the first record of horticultural foods. Only the fragmentary knowledge is available on the production and utilization of horticultural foods during the eras from Old Chosun to the Three States and the Unified Shilla. It seems that mutual exchange of horticultural foods between the Three States and neighbor countries was very active. Kinds of horticultural foods utilized were more variable in the era of Koryo dynasty. The situation on horticultural foods during Chosun dynasty is comparatively well known through published agricultural books and other literatures.

  • They have called buddist monkist doctor as who is to cure or care the people. However, It is just an intentional conception to emphasize the importance that they are doctor in the medical stand. Existing research results teached us the fact that is a more appropriate representation of a medical buddist monk. As a reseults from the examination in the history & Buddhism point, the concept of the medical buddist monk. As buddist monk who have medical arts at this time is appropriate.
