Comparison of Electromagnetic-wave Shielding Effect in Glass Fiber Reinforced Nano Composites (유리섬유강화 나노 복합재료의 전자기파 차폐효과 비교)

  • The research on electromagnetic shielding has been advanced for military applications as well as for commercial products. Utilizing the reflective properties and absorptive properties of shielding material, the replied signal measured at the rear surface or at the signal source can be minimized. The shielding effect was obtained from materials having special absorptive properties and structural characteristics such as stacking sequence. Recently researchers studied the electromagnetic properties of nano size particles. In this research {glass fiber}/{epoxy}/{nano particle} composites(GFR-Nano composites) was fabricated using various nano particles, and their properties in electromagnetic shielding were compared. For the visual observation of the nano composite materials, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and TEM(Transmission Electron Microscope) were used. For the measurement of electromagnetic shielding, HP8719ES S-parameter Vector Network Analyser System was used on the frequency range of 8 GHz${\~}$12GHz. Among the nano particles, carbon black and Multi-Walled Carbon Nano-Tube (MWCNT) revealed outstanding electromagnetic shielding. Although silver nano particles (flake and powder) were expected to have effective electromagnetic shielding due to their excellent electric conductivities, test results showed little shielding characteristics.

Analysis of Lightning Overvoltage and Shielding Effect of Arrester and Overhead Grounding Wire on DC Railroad (직류전차선로의 뇌과전압 해설 및 피뢰기와 가공지선 차폐효과 검토)

  • This paper presents the influence of the lightning overvoltage and the shielding effect of lightning arresters and overhead grounding wires on the DC railroad systems. Modeling of railroad system is established in ATPDraw to perform the simulation and the line constants of railroad were calculated using ATP_LCC. When a direct lightning strikes to the DC railroad, the result of simulation reveals that the shielding effect of arresters is reduced at messenger, trolly-wire, and the shielding effects of overhead grounding wire is over 90% than the case which does not include it. Therefore it is evaluated that overhead grounding wires should be installed in the DC railroad line.

  • PVC was chosen as a plastic product that can cope with lead, a radiation shielding material that is widely used in medical institutions. In addition to radiation shielding clothing, we want to evaluate whether it can be used as a medical device component and industrial shielding material in low dose areas. Commercial PVC has a density of 3.68 g/㎠ and can be positively expected sufficient shielding effect in certain radiation areas such as material flexibility and economy efficiency, and can be transformed into various forms and used as a lightweight shielding wall. The shielding performance was tested by adjusting the thickness of 5 sheets of 3mm PVC in the range of medical radiation used for clinical examination in medical institutions. Shielding performance against effective energy was evaluated based on tube radiation voltage of medical radiation. The thicker the PVC, the lower the tube voltage and the lower the effective energy, the greater the shielding effect. The shielding effect was 70% at 12mm thickness and 80kVp tube voltage. Therefore, the shielding effect of PVC material has a high dependence of thickness. In the future, continuous research is needed to make thin and light eco-friendly products while improving shielding performance.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the gamma ray shielding effect of heavy concrete containing magnetic aggregate and to confirm the applicability to the military protective facilities. In general, a military concrete structure protects combatants from bullets, and also it provides some radiation shielding. In this research, experiments were conducted using a Cs-137 source to check the gamma ray shielding effect. In addition, the Monte Carlo N-Particle(MCNP) modeling was applied to evaluate the gamma ray shielding effect of a military structure. As a result, as the concrete thickness increased, the shielding performance improved according th the linear attenuation law. With that, as the ratio of magnetic aggregate was increased, gamma ray shielding performance was also improved. Therefore, this research verified that the application of magnetic aggregate concrete to military facilities for radiation shielding purposes would be useful.

Performance Analysis of Low-level Radiation Shielding Sheet with Diamagnetic Nanoparticles

  • In this study, the authors attempted to produce a medical radiation shielding fiber that can be produced at a nanosize scale and that is, unlike lead, harmless to the human body. The performance of the proposed medical radiation shielding fiber was then evaluated. First, diamagnetic bismuth oxide, an element which, among elements that have a high atomic number and density, is harmless to the human body, was selected as the shielding material. Next, 10-100 nm sized nanoparticles in powder form were prepared by ball milling the bismuth oxide ($Bi_2O_3$), the average particle size of which is $1-500{\mu}m$, for approximately 10 minutes. The manufactured bismuth oxide was formed into a colloidal solution, and the radiation shielding fabric was fabricated by curing after coating the solution on one side or both sides of the fabric. The thicknesses of the shielding sheets prepared with bismuth oxide were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 1.0 mm. An experimental method was used to measure the absorbed dose and irradiation dose by using the lead equivalent test method of X-ray protection goods presented by Korean Industrial Standards; the resultant shielding rate was then calculated. From the results of this study, the X-ray shielding effect of the shielding sheet with 0.1 mm thickness was about 55.37% against 50 keV X-ray, and the X-ray shielding effect in the case of 1.0 mm thickness showed shielding characteristics of about 99.36% against 50 keV X-ray. In conclusion, it is considered that nanosized-bismuth radiation shielding fiber developed in this research will contribute to reducing the effects of primary X-ray and secondary X-ray such as when using a scattering beam at a low level exposure.

Effect of Shielding Gases on the Weldability of High Efficient GMAW Process (고능률 GMAW의 용접성에 미치는 보호가스의 영향)

  • The possibility of new GMAW process using economic shielding gases including CO$_{2}$ gas was investigated on the effect of shielding gas on weldabilty. In the optimum welding condition using 600A power source, FCAW process showed low depositions rate, 114 g/min at 300A, but new GMAW using other mixed shielding gases exhibited high deposition rate, 208-224 g/min at 450A. TIME gas, Ar+CO$_{2}$ gas and Ar+CO$_{2}$+O$_{2}$ gas as a shielding gas were able to be used to the very high welding current(450A), moreover TIME gas and Ar+CO$_{2}$ gas showed the highest arc stability among shielding gases studied in this experiments. The weld penetration was performed by axial spray transfer mode of weld droplet. On the basis of workability, weldability and economic point of view, Ar mixture (80%Ar+20%CO$_{2}$) gas was recommended as a shielding gas for the development and application of new GMAW process. This shielding gas showed the low spatter, good weld quality, stable arc and low cost at the region of high welding current.

Transmission Dose Measurement of Gamma-ray Using Tungsten Shield (텅스텐 차폐체의 감마선 투과선량 측정)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the penetration dose and shielding rates of tungsten shields used in apron material by changing the type of source used in the nuclear medicine department, thickness of shielding material and distance between the source and detector. For the experiment, the source, shield, and detector were arranged in a straight line and measured with an inspector at a height of 100 cm. The highest shielding effect of tungsten was measured for $^{201}Tl$, while $^{123}I$ showed a higher shielding effect than $^{99m}Tc$. For the sources used in the experiment, the penetration dose decreased with distance and the shielding rate was measured with thicker thickness. However, the shielding rate of $^{13}1I$ and $^{18}F$ sources was found to be lower than when there was no shielding at 0.25 mmPb shield. Therefore, even if the radiation shielding effect of tungsten is high, considering the characteristics according to the type of source and the thickness of the shielding material, it may be helpful to reduce the exposure.

Treatment of non-resonant spatial self-shielding effect of double heterogeneous region

  • A new approximation method was proposed for treating the non-resonant spatial self-shielding effects of double heterogeneous region such as the double heterogeneous effect of VHTR fuel compact in the thermal energy range and that of BP compact with BISO. The method was developed based on the effective homogenization method and a spherical unit cell model with explicit coated layers and a matrix layer. The self-shielding factor was derived from the relation between the collision probabilities for a double heterogeneous compact and the effective cross section for the homogenized compact. First, the collision probabilities and transmission probabilities for all layers of the spherical model were calculated using conventional collision probability solver. Then, the effective cross section for the homogenized sphere cell representing the homogenized compact was obtained from the transmission probability calculated using the probability density function of a chord length. The verification calculations revealed that the proposed method can predict the self-shielding factor with a maximum error of 2.3% and the double heterogeneous effect with a maximum error of 200 pcm in the typical VHTR problems with various packing fractions and BP compact sizes.

  • The shielding enclosure is very essential device to test the electromagnetic wave power generated by various RF equipments. Some standards for the shielding enclosures were established to test them in right method. Generally, There are IEEE-STD-299 and MIL-STD-285 and NSA-65-6 of the method for measuring the effectiveness of shielding enclosures, the IEEE-STD-299 combined MIL-STD-285 and NSA-65-6 about the method for measuring shielding effectiveness(SE) about 1969 years, but, the measurement point of 299 proposal is many points(including shielding wall, seam, coner beat, shielding door, etc) and demand long time of measurement. To improve SE test method for shielding enclosures was studied and suggested to develop a proper test procedure. First, we measure reference level as frequency range and H/V polarization, secondly, measure leakage point, and finally, measure shield effect and calculate SE. Our method has a merit of the less measurement point than IEEE-STD-299, and shorten time than 299, and define representation SE of shielding enclosure effectively.

Development of Shielding using Medical Radiological Contrast Media; Comparison Analysis of Barium Sulfate Iodine Shielding ability by Monte Carlo Simulation (의료방사선 조영제를 이용한 차폐체 개발; 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션을 통한 황산바륨과 요오드의 차폐능 비교분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to estimating the possibility of manufacturing radiation shielding sheet by searching for environmentally friendly materials suitable for medical environment of medical radiation shielding. There are many tungsten products which are currently used as shielding materials in place of lead, but there are small problems in the mass production of lightweight shielding sheets due to economical efficiency. To solve these problems, a lightweight, environmentally friendly material with economical efficiency is required. In this study, Barium sulphate and Iodine were proposed. Both materials are already used as contrast medias in radiography, and it is predicted that the shielding effect will be sufficient in a certain region as a shielding material because of the characteristic of absorbing radiation. Therefore, in this study, we used a Monte Carlo simulation to simulate radiation shielding materials. When it is a contrast agent such as Barium sulfate and Iodine, the radiation absorption effect in the high energy region appears greatly, and the effectiveness of the two shielding substance in the energy region of the star with thickness of 120 kVp is also evaluated in the medical radiation imaging region. Simulated estimation results it was possible to estimate the effectiveness of shielding for all two substances. Iodine has higher shielding effect than barium sulfate, 0.05 mm thick appears great effect. Therefore, the Monte Carlo simulation confirms that iodine, which is a radiological contrast agent, is also usable as barium sulfate in the production of radiation shielding sheets.
