  • The hot cell facility which is designed to permit safe handling of source materials with radioactivity levels up to 1,385 TBq, is planned to be built. To meet this goal, the facility is designed to keep gamma and neutron radiation lower than the recommended dose-rate in normally occupied areas. The calculations performed with QAD-CGGP and MCNP-4C are used to evaluate the proposed engineering design concepts that would provide acceptable dose-rates during a normal operation in hot cell facility. The maximum effective gamma dose-rates on the surfaces of the facility at operation area and at service area calculated by QAD-CGGP are estimated to be $2.10{\times}10^{-3}$, $2.97{\times}10^{-2}$ and $1.01{\times}10^{-1}$ mSv/h, respectively. And those calculated by MCNP-4C are $1.60{\times}10^{-3}$, $2.99{\times}10^{-3}$ and $7.88{\times}10^{-2}$ mSv/h, respectively The dose-rates contributed by neutrons are one order of magnitude less than that of gamma sources, and penetration and toboggan will be partly reinforced by lead shield.

  • Evaluation of an amplitude domain reflectometry (ADR) type soil moisture sensor as ThetaProbe ML2x using the response of frequency impedance was performed in a variety of soil porous media such as Jumunjin standard sand, weathered granite soil at Sangju area, and weathered gneiss soil at Jangsu area. The tested soils were classified with a dried condition and a wetted condition for comparing with soil volumetric water content under different installed depths of the measurement sensor. In the results the part of measurement rod including one signal rod and three shield rod 6cm in length was found to decrease the variation of measurement output voltage with insert 5cm over into the soil porous media. The measurement output voltage was verified to more stable output voltage under weathered granite soils and weathered gneiss soils contained the fine grain materials such as clay and silt minerals than the gradual grain material like as the standard sands. Therefore, measurement values by soil moisture sensor can be offered the more stable values when an contact volume between soil porous media and measurement sensor increase.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of solar tower receivers are experimentally investigated with receiver shapes. Generally, these become different according to the shapes and materials of the volumetric air receiver. In order to study these effects, the apparatus adopting laminated mesh and honeycombs as the volumetric air receiver is proposed. The receiver consists of laminated mesh (diameter; 100 mm, thickness; 1 mm), honeycombs (diameter; 100 mm, thickness; 30 mm) inserted into ceramic tube (inside diameter; 100 mm, outside diameter; 120 mm, length: 1000 mm). To apply heat to the receiver, an electric heater is used. To find out the heat transfer characteristics of the laminated mesh, the air temperatures are obtained by installing 3 thermocouples on each layer, dividing ceramic tube into 4 layers. Also, a radiative shield is installed to measure the only air temperature. The data for laminated mesh and honeycomb thickness of 30, 60, 90 mm are obtained. The results show that the temperature of layer 3 is higher than those of layer 2 and layer 1.

  • Background: The concrete walls inside the vaults of cyclotron facilities are activated by neutrons emitted by the targets during radioisotope production. Reducing the amount of radioactive waste created in such facilities is very important in case they are decommissioned. Thus, we proposed a strategy of reducing the neutron activation of the concrete walls in cyclotrons during operation. Materials and Methods: A polyethylene plate and B-doped Al sheet (30 wt% of B and 2.5 mm in thickness) were placed in front of the wall in the cyclotron room of a radioisotope production facility for pharmaceutical use. The target was Xe gas, and a Cu block was utilized for proton dumping. The irradiation time, proton energy, and beam current were 8 hours, 30 MeV, and $125{\mu}A$, respectively. To determine a suitable thickness for the polyethylene plate set in front of the B-doped Al sheet, the neutron-reducing effects achieved by inserting such sheets at several depths within polyethylene plate stacks were evaluated. The neutron fluence was monitored using an activation detector and 20-g on de Au foil samples with and without 0.5-mm-thick Cd foil. Each Au foil sample was pasted onto the center of a polyethylene plate and B-doped Al sheet, and the absolute activity of one Au foil sample was measured as a standard using a Ge detector. The resulting relative activities were obtained by calculating the ratio of the photostimulated luminescence of each foil sample to that of the standard Au foil. Results and Discussion: When the combination of a 4-cm-thick polyethylene plate and B-doped Al sheet was employed, the thermal neutron rate was reduced by 78%. Conclusion: The combination of a 4-cm-thick polyethylene plate and B-doped Al sheet effectively reduced the neutron activation of the investigated concrete wall.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of single and combined applications of fluoride on the amount of fluoride release, and the remineralization and physical properties of enamel. Materials and Methods: Each of four fluoride varnish and gel products (Fluor Protector, FP, Ivoclar Vivadent; Tooth Mousse Plus, TM, GC; 60 Second Gel, A, Germiphene; CavityShield, CS, 3M ESPE) and two fluoride solutions (2% sodium fluoride, N; 8% tin(ii) fluoride, S) were applied on bovine teeth using single and combined methods (10 per group), and then the amount of fluoride release was measured for 4 wk. The electron probe microanalysis and the Vickers microhardness measurements were conducted to assess the effect of fluoride application on the surface properties of bovine teeth. Results: The amount of fluoride release was higher in combined applications than in single application (p < 0.05). Microhardness values were higher after combined applications of N with FP, TM, and CS than single application of them, and these values were also higher after combined applications of S than single application of A (p < 0.05). Ca and P values were higher in combined applications of N with TM and CS than single application of them (p < 0.05). They were also increased after combined applications of the S with A than after single application (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Combined applications of fluoride could be used as a basis to design more effective methods of fluoride application to provide enhanced remineralization.

  • Although interventional procedures use very low tube currents, there is a high risk of exposure to radiation as well as the operator due to long-term radiation exposure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of radiation dose on the quality of the operator by measuring the dose received by the operator in the interventional procedure of the cerebral vascular system and finding the shielding material and shielding method which can effectively shield the exposure from the medical radiation. And to find a way to minimize it to the extent that it does not. As a result, when the newly designed shielding system with Nano Tungsten material was used, it was confirmed that the mean dose was reduced by 7.95% on average by the operator. Also, the PSNR results were measured to be 38.44 dB when using the designed shielding material, and it was confirmed that Nano Tungsten does not affect the image quality. In conclusion, the Nano Tungsten shielding material proved to be capable of significantly reducing the operator radiation dose, without affecting the image quality. The use of the above materials is expected to solve the problems related to the harmfulness and economical efficiency of the human body and the environment, which have recently become an issue of shielding materials.

  • The effects of Sm:Ba:Cu composition ratio in SmBCO coated conductor on their superconducting properties were investigated. The SmBCO coated conductors were fabricated by reactive co-evaporation method using EDDC(Evaporation using Drum in Dual Chamber) system. In this system, we could obtain various samples with different composition ratios in a batch by the technique providing composition gradient at deposition zone. From the specimens prepared by EDDC system, we found that composition ratio is uniform parallel to the drum axis, but gradient along the circumferential direction of the drum. We installed a shield having parallelogram open area between the deposition chamber and the evaporation chamber in EDDC system, and attached a 30 cm long template, which is parallel to drum axis, onto the drum surface. In this configuration, we could obtain SmBCO coated conductors having a gradient composition along the length of template. We measured the composition ratios and surface morphologies with periodic interval by SEM and EDAX, and confirmed the profile of composition ratio. We also measured critical current using non-contact Hall probe critical current measurement system and thereby could plot composition ratio vs. critical current. The maximum critical current was obtained, and the surface morphology with the shape of roof tile was observed at the corresponding composition ratio of Sm:Ba:Cu = 1.01:1.99:4.87. It was also found that composition ratio had an effect on not only critical current but also surface morphology.

  • The skin sparing effect associated with high energy x-ray or gamma ray beams may be reduce or lost under certain conditions of treatment. Current trends in using large fields. Shield carrying trays, compensating filters, and isocentric methods of treatment have posed problems of increased skin dose which sometimes become a limiting factor in giving adquate tumor doses. We used the shallow ion chamber to measure the phantom surface dose and the physical treatment variables for Co-60 gamma ray, 4MV and 10 MV x-ray beam. The dependence of percent surface dose on field sizes, atomic number of the shielding tray materials and its distance from the surface for 4, 10MV x-rays and Co-60 gamma ray is qualitatively similar. The use of 2 mm thick tin filter is recommended for situations where a low atomic number tray is introduced into the beam at distances less than 15 cm from the surface and with the large field sized for 4 MV x-ray beam. In case of Co-60 gamma ray, the lead glass tray is suitable for enhancement of skin sparing. Also, the filter distance should be as large as possible to achieve substantial skin sparing.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate whether tungsten nanoparticles have a shielding effect on scattered light generated at high doses as an alternative material to lead used to shield scattered light in electron beam therapy. A plate was manufactured to set the position of the dosimeter and the size of the radiation field to be constant. The glass dosimeter was placed at 12 points, which were 1, 2, and 4 cm apart from the center of the field of 10 × 10 cm2 in the cross direction. A total of 12 types of tungsten nanoparticle shields were developed with a thickness of 0.75 mm to 4.00 mm and a size of 10 × 10 cm2 using 0.4, 0.75, and 1 mm materials. Using a linear accelerator, measurements were made four times at 6 MeV and four times at 12 MeV, and the dose intensity was investigated at 100 MU. The 4 mm shielding plate showed the highest shielding effect at 1 cm from the irradiation field. The 1 mm shielding plate at 2 cm from the irradiation field had the lowest shielding effect. As the thickness of the tungsten shielding plate increased, the electron beam's shielding effect increased sharply. It was confirmed that tungsten nanoparticles can reduce the amount of scattered light generated by electron beam therapy. Therefore, this study will provide basic data when follow-up studies are conducted on the shielding ability of tungsten nanoparticles.
