Assessing the Dyeing Properties of Bacterial Cellulose Using Plant-based Natural Dyes (식물성 천연염료에 의한 박테리아 셀룰로오스 섬유소재의 염색 특성)

  • This study aimed to assess the colorizing properties of bacterial cellulose (BC) using plant-based dyes, namely spinach, beet, and banana peel, and determine the dyeing conditions of each dye based on color strength (K/S) values. Tannic acid and walnut shell powder were utilized as bio-mordants, and their effects on the dyeability of BC were compared to metallic mordants. Additionally, the type of mordant and the mordanting method were assessed according to their rubbing fastness and dry-cleaning fastness. The K/S values of the colorized and mordanted BCs were also compared to examine their mordanting conditions. Finally, the mordanting conditions for spinach, beet, and banana peel dyeing were selected as post-mordanting with tannic acid, meta-mordanting with tannic acid, and post-mordanting with walnut shell powder, respectively. Based on the results, the selected mordanting conditions improved both rubbing fastness and dry-cleaning fastness of BCs to grade 5, and the light fastness achieved grade 4-5. The tensile strength and flexibility of the dyed BCs were also enhanced and comparable to that of untreated cowhide leather.

Biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani Damping-off of Cucumber by Bacillus cereus KJA-118 (Bacillus cereus KJA-118을 이용한 오이 모잘록병의 생물학적 방제)

  • A bacterium, KJA-118 showing a strong chitinase activity, was isolated and identified as Bacillus cereus. The strain produced maximum level of chitinase, when grown aerobically at $30^{\circ}C$ for 4 days in basal broth containing 1% colloidal chitin in the initial pH adjusted to 6.0. Among various carbon sources such as crab shell powder, chitin powder, colloidal chitin, and R. solani mycelium, maximum chitinase activity was found in culture broth supplemented with R. solani mycelium. When KJA-118 was incubated with R. solani, the cell wall of the fungus was found to be completely destroyed. SDS-PAGE and active staining results revealed that KJA-118 produced three isoforms of chitinase with molecular weights of 68 kDa, 47 kDa, and 37 kDa. When the suspension of KJA-118 was treated to cucumber seedlings, reducing rate of damping-off caused by R. solani was about 28.1%.

Effects of Nitrite and Phosphate Replacements for Clean-Label Ground Pork Products

  • We investigated the effects of different phosphate replacements on the quality of ground pork products cured with sodium nitrite or radish powder to determine their potential for achieving clean-label pork products. The experimental design was a 2×5 factorial design. For this purpose, the ground meat mixture was assigned into two groups, depending on nitrite source. Each group was mixed with 0.01% sodium nitrite or 0.4% radish powder together with 0.04% starter culture, and then processed depending on phosphate replacement [with or without 0.5% sodium tripolyphosphate; STPP (+), STPP (-), 0.5% oyster shell calcium (OSC), 0.5% citrus fiber (CF), or 0.5% dried plum powder (DPP)]. All samples were cooked, cooled, and stored until analysis within two days. The nitrite source had no effect on all dependent variables of ground pork products. However, in phosphate replacement treatments, the STPP (+) and OSC treatments had a higher cooking yield than the STPP (-), CF, or DPP treatments. OSC treatment was more effective for lowering total fluid separation compared to STPP (-), CF, or DPP treatments, but had a higher percentage than STPP (+). The STPP (+) treatment did not differ from the OSC or CF treatments for CIE L* and CIE a*. Moreover, no differences were observed in nitrosyl hemochrome content, lipid oxidation, hardness, gumminess, and chewiness between the OSC and STPP (+) treatments. In conclusion, among the phosphate replacements, OSC addition was the most suitable to provide clean-label pork products cured with radish powder as a synthetic nitrite replacer.

Growth-promoting Effect of New Iron-chelating Fertilizer on Lettuce (산세수와 게껍질을 이용한 신기능성 철분 비료의 상추 생육 촉진 효과)

  • Iron (Fe) is an important micronutrient for the health and growth of plants. Iron is usually provided by fertilizers, and iron-chelate fertilizers are well absorbed by plants. This study presents the plant growth-promoting effects of a new functional iron fertilizer, Fe-chelating crab shell powder (FCSP), which is generated from the chelation of Fe ions with crab shell powder. Iron chelate was derived from spent pickling liquor, which is rich in reductive iron, iron(II) oxide. To analyze the effects of FCSP on plant growth, we treated lettuce with several concentrations of FCSP in both lab- and field-scale experiments. In the lab-scale test, the treatment of 50 ppm of FCSP highly promoted growth and resulted in increases in the size, weight, number and chlorophylls content of leaves of plants compared to the treatment of crab shell powder. Fifty ppm of FCSP also increased the size and weight of leaves up to 2 times compared to the application of chemical fertilizer and/or compost in field conditions. In addition, the FCSP treatment resulted in the highest ion uptake of Fe in lettuce leaves. Moreover, FCSP led to increases in the amounts of Fe, Ca, available phosphorus and organic matter in treated soil, indicating that soil quality was improved. Taken together, our results demonstrate that FCSP promotes lettuce growth via enhancement of Fe availability and improves soil quality. Therefore, FCSP can be utilized as a new functional iron fertilizer.

Effect of Crab Shell on Shelf-life Enhancement of Kimchi (게껍질의 김치보존성 향상효과)

  • To enhance the shelf-life and quality of baechu kimchi, the effects of CSP(crab shell powder) addition to kimchi was investigated. Overall qualities were deteriorated by fish odor, chewiness of particles, sharp pH increase at the early fermentation stage; therefore in order to solve these problems kimchi fermentation was carried out with kimchi containing 1, 3, 5% CSPB for salted baech weight at $10^{\circ}C$ for 300ays. Quality of kimchi was evalutated by the measurement of pH, acidity, colour L, a, and b value, the number of microbe and lactic acid bacteria, texture. Ten highly trained panelists were involved in the sensory evaluation. During the entire fermentation periods, pH, hardness, colour L, a and b value, the number of lactic acid bacteria of kimchi with CSPB were higher than those of control, but acidity was lower. Sensory quality showed that sour taste of control at 15-day fermentation was already strong. However, sour taste, crispness taste, and overall taste of kimchi with CSPB untill 20-day fermentation were good. Especially, overall taste of kimchi containing 3% CSPB at 30-day fermentation was good, but that of kimchi containing 5% showed fish odor from the early periods of fermentation.

Effect of Additives on the Powder Characteristics of Peonja Dry Elixir (편자 고형엘릭실제의 분체 특성에 미치는 부형제의 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of additives on the powder characteristics of peonja dry elixir. Peonja dry elixirs were prepared with various amounts of dextrin using a spray-dryer, and their powder characteristics such as flow, cohesion and compressibility were evaluated as an angle of repose, cohesion index and compressibility index, respectively. Their powder characteristics were not significantly different from one another, indicating that the hydrophilic dextrin, a base of dry elixir hardly affected their powder characteristics. Peonja dry elixirs were prepared with 10% dextrin and various amounts of additives such as mannitol (hydrophilic excipient), sodium lauryl sulfate (surfactant), colloidal silica (hydrophobic excipient) and HPMC (polymer), respectively, and their angle of repose, cohesion index and compressibility index were measured. The powder characteristics of peonja dry elixirs prepared with mannitol were not significantly different from one another, indicating that the mannitol scarcely improved the powder characteristics of peonja dry elixirs. The angle of repose and cohesion index of peonja dry elixirs significantly decreased with increasing amount of sodium lauryl sulfate to 0.3% followed by no significant changes in them. The cohesion index of peonja dry elixir significantly decreased with increasing amount of colloidal silica. The angle of repose and cohesion index of peonja dry elixir significantly decreased with increasing amount of HPMC to 0.3% followed by an abrupt increase in them. However, the compressibility index of peonja dry elixir significantly increased with increasing amount of HPMC to 0.3% followed by an abrupt decrease in them. Our results suggested that a small amount of sodium lauryl sulfate, colloidal silica and HPMC improved markedly the powder characteristics of peonja dry elixirs due to forming stronger and less hygroscopic shell of peonja dry elixirs. Among the peonja dry elixirs studied, the peonja dry elixir prepared with 0.3% sodium lauryl sulfate and 0.3% HPMC had the lowest angle of repose of $27^{\circ}$ and cohesion index of 37.8%, and the highest compressibility index of 38.7%, respectively. Thus, sodium lauryl sulfate and HPMC appear to be promising additives for peonja dry elixir, if used in adequate amounts.

Synthesis and Sinterability of Hydroxyapatite from Fishery by-products

  • Hydroxyapatites (HAps) were synthesized using the powdered waste of fishery products, i.e., fish scales and crab shells, as starting materials. HAp was synthesized by a wet-chemistry method followed by calcination at 600 and $800^{\circ}C$. Calcined crabshell powder revealed a single HAp phase and fine powder, while calcined fish-scale powder showed a ${\beta}-TCP$ secondary phase, even at the higher calcination temperature. Dense HAp pellets were obtained from the crab-shell powder by spark plasma sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 10 min under applied pressures of 40 and 80 MPa in a vacuum state, giving sample densities of 2.93 and $3.06g/cm^3$, respectively. The estimated grain size of HAp was $448{\pm}96$ and $283{\pm}59nm$ for applied pressures of 40 and 80 MPa, respectively. In contrast, the HAp obtained using the pressureless sintering technique showed excessive grain growth without further densification.

Evaluation of Experimental Practical Diets for Juvenile Sea Cucumber Apostichopus japonicus (어린 해삼(Apostichopus japonicus)용 사료 개발을 위한 실험사료의 사육효능 평가)

  • Six experimental diets for juvenile sea cucumbers Apostichopus japonicus were evaluated and compared with current commercial diets. Sea cucumbers (50 per tank; initial mean weight $2.3{\pm}0.1g$) in three replicates of seven groups were fed one of six experimental diets (ED1, 20% wild-harvested Sargassum thunbergii powder; ED2, 20% commercial S. thunbergii powder; ED3, 20% Undaria pinnatifida and Ascophyllum nodosum powders; ED4, 40% U. pinnatifida and A. nodosum powders; ED5, 10% brewer's yeast; and ED6, 10% sea shell powder) or a commercial diet (CD) for 28 weeks. The survival rate in all groups was 85-94%, with no significant difference among the experimental groups. The mean body weight of the sea cucumbers was significantly different among the experimental groups 6 weeks after the feeding trial. The final mean weight of the sea cucumbers was highest in ED1, ED3, and ED4, followed by ED6, ED5, ED2, and CD, in decreasing order. The results of this study suggest that U. pinnatifida and A. nodosum powders could provide a substitute for the S. thunbergii powder commonly used in commercial sea cucumber diets. Thus, the EP4 diet formulation, which contains no S. thunbergii, could be used as a practical feed for juvenile sea cucumbers.

Effect of TiCN/WC Ratio on Grain Shape and Grain Growth in the TiCN-WC-Co System (TiCN-WC-Co 계에서 TiCN/WC 비의 변화에 따른 입자모양과 입자 성장)

  • 공구강 등 산업용 재료로 널리 사용되는 카바이드 계 재료는 입자 크기 및 분포에 따라 기계적 성질이 변화하므로, 이를 제어하고 조절하는 기술에 관하여 많은 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 TiCN-WC-Co 복합초경계 에서 소결 공정 및 조성변화에 따른 입자 모양을 관찰하고 이에 따른 업자 성장 거동을 고찰하였다. 일반적으로 입자 조대화 양상과 고상 입자의 모양과는 밀접한 관계가 있다. 각진 입자의 경우에 는 계면이 원자적으로 singular 하여 원자의 홉착이 어렵기 때문에 임계값 이상의 성장 구동력을 받 는 몇몇 입자만 성장하는 비정상 입자 성장이 일어날 수 있다. 반면에 계면이 rough한 퉁큰 엽자의 경우에는 원자 홉착에 필요한 구동력이 존재하지 않아 성장 구동력을 받는 모든 입자들이 성장하기 때문에 정상 입자 성장을 하게 된다. 이와 같이 입자 모양에 따른 입자 성장 거동은 전체 미세구조를 결정하게 되며, 이에 따른 물리 화학적 물성을 변화시킨다. 이러한 입자 성장 원리를 적용하 면 복합초경계 (TiCN-WC-Co)에서도 입자성장이 억제되고 치밀한 소결체를 제조할 수 있을 것이다. 본 실험에서는 평균입도가 각각 0.1, 1.33, 2$\mu\textrm{m}$인 TiCN, WC, Co 분말을 사용하여 $((I00_{-x)}TiCN+_xWC)-30Co$ (wt%) 조성에서 TiCN/WC 비를 변화시키면서 업자 모양과 입자성장 거동을 관찰하였다. 청량된 분말은 WC 초경 볼로 밀렁하고, 건조한 후, 100 mesh 체로 조립화 하였다. 이 분말을 100 MPa의 압력으로 냉간정수압성형 하고 $10^{-2}$ torr의 진공분위기의 graphite f furnace에서 carbon black으로 packing 하여 액상형성 온도 이상에서 소결하였다. 소결된 시편은 경면 연마하여 주사전자현미경으로 미세 조직을 관찰하였다. TiCN-30Co 조성 시편은 corner-round 모양의 입자 모양으로 소결 시간 증가에 따라 빠른 입자 성장을 나타내었다 .(7STiCN+2SWC)-30Co 조성 시변의 경우 일반적으로 보고된 바와 같이 core/shell 구조를 나타내었으며, core는 TiC-rich 상이었고, shell은 (Ti,W)(C,N) 복합 탄화물 상이었다. WC 함량이 중가함에 따라 입자의 corner-round 영역이 증가하였으며 (SOTiCN-SOWC)-30Co 조성 근처에서는 거의 둥근 형태의 입자 모양을 나타내었다. 또한 TiCN - 30Co 조성 시편에 비하여 WC가 첨가된 시펀들은 작은 평균입자크기를 나타내었다. 본 연구의 결과는 shell 영역 조성 변화는 계면에너지 이방성과 기지상 내의 펑형 입자 모양을 변화시키고 나아가 입자 성장 속도 에도 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여준다.

  • As a primary material for MLCC, $BaTiO_3$ particles coated with two additives in a core-shell structure were prepared in this study. This composite powder can not only reduce the VOC emission during MLCC manufacture but also increase the density and reliability of electronic products. The additives were $Y_2O_3$ and $MnCO_3$, whose composition information was obtained from domestic companies. It was observed that the surface of $BaTiO_3$ particles was uniformly as well as simultaneously coated by those two materials via urea-decomposition reaction over $70^{\circ}C$ as the reaction temperature. Elemental analysis indicated that the measured content of each additve was quite close to the designated value. The effect of polymeric dispersant such as PVP, on the coating characteristics was not as significant as expected.
