Static and modal analysis of bio-inspired laminated composite shells using numerical simulation

  • In the first part of this study, a numerical simulation model was developed using the mechanical APDL software to validate the results of the 3D-elastisity theory on the laminated sandwich plate developed by Panago. The numerical simulation model showed a good agreement to the results of Pagano's theory in terms of deflection, normal stresses, and shear stresses. In the second part of this study, the developed numerical simulation model was used to define different plates dimensions and fibers layup orientations to examine the load response in terms of deflection and stresses. Further analysis was implemented on the natural frequencies of laminated xxx plates of the plates. The layup configurations include Unidirectional (UD), Cross-Ply (CP), Quasi-Isotropic (QI), the linear bio-inspired known as Linear-Helicoidal (LH), and the nonlinear bio-inspired known as Fibonacci-Helicoidal (FH). The following numerical simulation model can be used for the design and study of novel, sophisticated bio-inspired composite structures in a variety of configurations subjected to sinusoidal or constant loads.

Galvanic Corrosion Between Component Parts of Aluminum Alloys for Heat Exchanger of Automobile

  • There are a variety of heat exchangers used in automobiles, such as shell and tube heat exchangers, double tube heat exchangers, and plate heat exchangers. Most of them are water-cooled to prevent engine overheating. There have been reports of corrosion damage to these heat exchangers due to continuous wetting caused by external temperature differences, road pollutants, and snow removal. In addition, galvanic corrosion, which occurs when two dissimilar materials come into contact, has been identified as a major cause. In this study, corrosion characteristics and galvanic corrosion behavior of Al alloy (AA3003, AA4045 and AA7072) used in automobile heat exchangers were analyzed. Effective clad materials for heat exchanger tubes and fins were also evaluated. It was found that AA7072 should be applied as the cladding material for fin AA3003 and that AA4045 was suitable as a cladding material for tube AA3003 because this clad materials application was the most effective clad design to delay the occurrence of pinhole in the tube. Main factors influencing galvanic corrosion dissolution were found to be galvanic corrosion potential difference and galvanic corrosion current density.

Collapse Analysis of Ultimate Strength Considering the Heat Affected Zone of an Aluminum Stiffened Plate in a Catamaran (카타마란 알루미늄 보강판의 열영향부 효과를 고려한 최종강도 붕괴 해석)

  • The use of high-strength aluminum alloys for ships and of shore structures has many benefits compared to carbon steels. Recently, high-strength aluminum alloys have been widely used in onshore and of shore industries, and they are widely used for the side shell structures of special-purpose ships. Their use in box girders of bridge structures and in the topside of fixed platforms is also becoming more widespread. Use of aluminum material can reduce fuel consumption by reducing the weight of the composite material through a weight composition ratio of 1/3 compared to carbon steel. The characteristics of the stress strain relationship of an aluminum structure are quite different from those of a steel structure, because of the influence of the welding[process heat affected zone (HAZ). The HAZ of aluminum is much wider than that of steel owing to its higher heat conductivity. In this study, by considering the HAZ generated by metal insert gas (MIG) welding, the buckling and final strength characteristics of an aluminum reinforcing plate against longitudinal compression loads were analyzed. MIG welding reduces both the buckling and ultimate strength, and the energy dissipation rate after initial yielding is high in the range of the HAZ being 15 mm, and then the difference is small when HAZ being 25 mm or more. Therefore, it is important to review and analyze the influence of the HAZ to estimate the structural behavior of the stiffened plate to which the aluminum alloy material is applied.

Numerical Prediction of Ultimate Strength of RC Beams and Slabs with a Patch by p-Version Nonlinear Finite Element Modeling and Experimental Verification (p-Version 비선형 유한요소모델링과 실험적 검증에 의한 팻취 보강된 RC보와 슬래브의 극한강도 산정)

  • A new finite element model will be presented to analyze the nonlinear behavior of RC beams and slabs strengthened by a patch repair. The numerical approach is based on the p-version degenerate shell element including theory of anisotropic laminated composites, theory of materially and geometrically nonlinear plates. In the nonlinear formulation of this model, the total Lagrangian formulation is adopted with large deflections and moderate rotations being accounted for in the sense of von Karman hypothesis. The material model is based on hardening rule, crushing condition, plate-end debonding strength model and so on. The Gauss-Lobatto numerical quadrature is applied to calculate the stresses at the nodal points instead of Gauss points. The validity of the proposed p-version nonlinear finite element model is demonstrated through the load-deflection curves, the ultimate loads, and the failure modes of RC beams or slabs bonded with steel plates or FRP plates compared with available result of experiment and other numerical methods.

Detection of Thermal Ratcheting Deformation for Cylindrical Shells by Ultrasonic Guided Wave (유도초음파를 이용한 원통형 쉘의 열 라체팅 변형 탐지)

  • The thermal ratcheting deformation at the reactor baffle and upper internal structure of the liquid metal reactor (LMR) can occur due to movement of the hot sodium free surface. In in-service inspection of reactor internals of LMR, a new inspection technique should be developed for the detection of the thermal ratcheting damage. In this study, an inspection technique using ultrasonic guided wave is proposed for the detection of the thermal ratcheting damage of cylindrical vessels. A 316L stainless steel cylindrical shell specimen has been prepared. The thermal ratchet structural tests were cyclically performed by heat-up up to $550^{\circ}C$ with steep temperature gradients along the axial direction after cool-down by cooling water. Ultrasonic guided wave propagation has been characterized by analysis of dispersion curve of the stainless steel plate. The zero-order antisymmetric $A_0$ guided wave has been selected as the optimal mode for detection of the ratcheting deformation. It is confirmed that the thermal ratcheting deformation can be detected by the measurement of transit time difference of circumferentially propagated $A_0$ guided waves.

Dynamic Load Allowance of Highway Bridges by Numerical Dynamic Analysis for LRFD Calibration (LRFD 보정을 위한 동적해석에 의한 도로교의 동적하중허용계수)

  • A reliability based calibration of dynamic load allowance (DLA) of highway bridge is performed by numerical dynamic analysis of various types of bridges taking into account of the road surface roughness and bridge-vehicle interaction. A total of 10 simply supported bridges with three girder types in the form of prestressed concrete girder, steel plate girder, and steel box girder is analyzed. The cross sections recommended in "The Standardized Design of Highway Bridge Superstructure" by the Korean Ministry of Construction are used for the prestressed concrete girder bridges and steel plate girder bridges while the box girder bridges are designed by the LRFD method. Ten sets of road surface roughness for each bridge are generated from power spectral density (PSD) function by assuming the roadway as "Average Road". A three dimensionally modeled 5-axle tractor-trailer with its gross weight the same as that of DB-24 design truck is used in the dynamic analysis. For the finite element modeling of superstructure, beam elements for the main girder, shell elements for concrete deck, and rigid links between main girder and concrete deck are used. The statistical mean and coefficient of variation of DLA are obtained from a total of 100 DLA results for 10 different bridges with each having 10 sets of road surface roughness. Applying the DLA statistics obtained, the DLA is finally calibrated in a reliability based LRFD format by using the formula developed in the calibration of OHBDC code.

Stress Analysis in Waterproof Layer on Steel Bridge Deck Pavement Using Finite Element Analysis (유한요소해석을 이용한 교면포장의 방수층에서의 응력해석)

  • The behavior of pavement and waterproofing layer on the steel bridge deck system under traffic loading was analyzed using a finite element method in this paper. In the finite element analysis, the othotropic steel bridge deck is represented by equivalent plate using solid element instead of shell element and the interface is assumed perfect bonding state. The effects of several parameters such as thickness of deck, Young's modulus of deck, thickness of pavement, different braking loading, and temperature on the stresses and strain in the interface are investigated for bridge deck pavement. The shear stress of waterproof layer increases with decrease of bridge deck thickness and stiffness. The change of shear stress is negligible when the bridge deck thictaess is greater than 150mm and stiffness is greater than $2{\times}10^{5}MPa$. As the pavement thickness and temperature decrease, the shear stress in the waterproof layer tends to be increased. The tensile strain at the bottom asphalt layer decreases as the temperature and thickness increase.

A novel higher-order shear deformation theory for bending and free vibration analysis of isotropic and multilayered plates and shells

  • In this work, the bending and free vibration analysis of multilayered plates and shells is presented by utilizing a new higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The proposed involves only four unknowns, which is even less than the first shear deformation theory (FSDT) and without requiring the shear correction coefficient. Unlike the conventional HSDTs, the present one presents a novel displacement field which incorporates undetermined integral variables. The equations of motion are derived by using the Hamilton's principle. These equations are then solved via Navier-type, closed form solutions. Bending and vibration results are found for cylindrical and spherical shells and plates for simply supported boundary conditions. Bending and vibration problems are treated as individual cases. Panels are subjected to sinusoidal, distributed and point loads. Results are presented for thick to thin as well as shallow and deep shells. The computed results are compared with the exact 3D elasticity theory and with several other conventional HSDTs. The proposed HSDT is found to be precise compared to other several existing ones for investigating the static and dynamic response of isotropic and multilayered composite shell and plate structures.

A Study on the Hull Form of Fishing Boats around 1900 in South Coast of Korea (한국 남해안의 1900년경 어선의 선형에 관한 연구)

  • It was investigated and analized on the construction and hull form for the ordinary fishing boat of south coast in Korea, and then analogized on the shipbuilding technology of fishing boat and fishing type around 1900 by B-spline form parameter method. The results obtained can be summarize as follows : (1) It was known that the boats used in this study have more narrow hull form than that of ancient fishing boats and their hull form was improved around 1900. (2) Keel was composed of bar keel with angle cross section. The stem corner have a material of bar stem and makes a sharp pointed stem. (3) Shell plate was jointed by the rabbetted clinker joint method. (4) It was investigated that anchovy drag net fishing boat has high L/B, L/D, B/D value as compared with drift gill net fishing boat. (5) Two boats have a good stability and particularly anchovy drag net fishing boat have a better stability value in comparison to the drift gill net fishing boat.

Pretreatment of Livestock Wastewater containing PO4-3-P with Waste Oyster Shells (폐굴껍질을 이용한 축산폐수중 무기인의 1차 처리)

  • In this study, various batch tests were performed to examine the utilization of waste oyster shells for removal of $PO_4^{3-}-P$ in livestock wastewater, because waste oyster shells have been known to be very porous and to have alkaline minerals such as calcium and mangnesium. $PO_4^{3-}-P$ removal rate were increased by waste oyster shells, as specific surface area and contact efficiency per unit area of their were increased. Generally, it could be showed that $PO_4^{3-}-P$ removal rate were very influenced by particle size, dosage and temperature. At low pH of initial reactions, it would be showed that $PO_4^{3-}-P$ removals were directly influenced by adsorption but crystallization process were dominated with passed time and pH increasing. The SEM observed that the variations were hardly seen, but particle sizes of waste oyster shell were relatively big after reactions and showed forms of smaller plate than before reactions.
