  • Nowadays heat exchangers that have been applied for freon refrigerating systems, a shell and tube type condenser, but because of their large size, large space for installation and more amount of refrigerants are needed. Therefore, in this study, we will find the most suitable operating condition through the comparison of performance between the shell & tube type and shell & disk type heat exchanger with R22. The experiments are carried out for the condensing pressure of refrigeration system from 1500kPa to 1600kPa and for the degree of superheat from 0 to $1^{\circ}C$ at each condensing pressure. As a result of experiment, if the shell & disk type heat exchanger is applied for R22 refrigerating systems, minimized input of refrigerants and space required for installation will be secured, which will have a great contribute to financial improvement for industry.

  • An experimental study was carried on the characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer in a fluidized bed shell-and-tube type heat exchanger with corrugated tubes. Seven different solid particles having same volume were circulated in the tubes. The effects of various parameters such as water flow rates, particle geometries and materials, and geometries of corrugated tubes on relative velocities and drag coefficients were investigated. The present work showed that the drag force coefficients of particles in the corrugated tubes were usually lower than those in the smooth tubes, meanwhile the relative velocities between particles and water in the corrugated tubes were little higher than those in the smooth tubes except the particles of glasses.

  • Shell-tube heat exchanger is widely applied in industrial field by easily manufacturing as to various size and flow patterns. In this study, by changing baffle's cut direction, tilt angle and rotational angle as well as by using SST (Shear Stress Transport) $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model in ANSYS FLUENT v.14, the heat transfer rate and pressure drop characteristics of inner shell will be analyzed to improve heat transfer ability. As a result of analysis, heat transfer performance according to cut direction of baffle has been improved with vertical model B and angle $45^{\circ}$ model C than horizontal model A. In addition, the tilt $10^{\circ}$ of the baffle and rotational angle $0^{\circ}-90^{\circ}-180^{\circ}-270^{\circ}$ of model D showed better result in heat transfer rate and pressure drop.

  • Numerical results are presented for the 2-dimensional turbulent transient heat transfer of the shell/tube heat exchanger with a step change of the inlet temperature in the primary side. Heat transfer boundary conditions outside the pipe are given partially by the convection heat transfer conditions and partially by insulated conditions. Calculation results were obtained by solving the unsteady two-dimensional elliptic forms for the Reynolds-averaged governing equations for the mass, momentum and energy. Finite-difference method was used to obtain discretization equations, and the SIMPLER solution algorithm was employed for the calculation procedure. Turbulent model used is the algebraic model proposed by Cebeci-Smith. Results presented include the time variant Nusselt number distribution, average temperature distribution and outlet temperatures for the various inlet temperatures and flow rates.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer in a vertical type fluidized bed shell-and-tube type heat exchanger with corrugated tube. Seven different solid particles having the same volume were circulated in the heat of exchanger. The effects of various parameters such as water flow rates, particle geometries, materials, and corrugated tube geometries were investigated. The present work showed that the higher thermal capacities of materials and the geometries closer to the spherical one have higher heat transfer performances. In addition, heat transfer coefficients in the corrugated tubes were a little higher than those in the smooth tubes.

  • The shell and tube heat exchanger is an essential part of a power plant for recovering transfer heat between the feed water of a boiler and the wasted heat. The baffles are also an important element inside the heat exchanger. Internal materials influence the flow pattern in the bed. The influence of baffles in the velocity profiles was observed using a three-dimensional PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) around baffles in a horizontal circular tube. The velocity of the particles was measured before the baffle and between them in the test tube. Results show that the velocity vectors near the front baffle flow along the vertical wall, and then concentrate on the upper opening of the front baffle. The velocity profiles circulate in the front and rear baffle. These profiles are related to the Reynolds number (Re) or the flow intensity. Velocity profiles at lower Re number showed complicated mixing to obtain the velocities and concentrate on the lower opening of the rear baffle as front wall. Numerical simulations were performed to investigate the effects of the baffle and obtain the velocity profiles between the two baffles. In this study, a commercial CFD package, Fluent 6.3.21 with the turbulent flow modeling, k-${\epsilon}$ are adopted. The path line and local axial velocities are calculated between two baffles using this program.

  • An experimental study has been carried out in order to investigate the heat storage characteristics for a latent heat storage tank with horizontal shell and tube type. The heat exchanger consisted of horizontal cylindrical capsules with a staggered tube bank layout. Based on the obtained data, the effects of flow rate and inlet fluid temperature on the melting time and heat storage rates were examined. It is found that the melting time decreased with increase of the flow rate and the inlet temperature. Results also show that at the initial stage of heat transfer the heat storage rate represents the maximum value and rapidly decreases.

  • Heat transfer augmentation in heat exchangers has received much attention in recent years, mainly due to energy efficiency and environmental considerations. Many active and Passive techniques are currently being employed in heat exchangers, with some inserts providing a cost-effective and efficient means of augmenting heat transfer. The Purpose of this paper is to determine the pressure loss and heat transfer characteristics of a heat exchanger using static mixing technology. Experimental measurements were taken on two set-ups: a single tube heat exchanger and a shell-tube heat exchanger with two static mixing inserts. It was concluded that the static mixing inserts resulted in an increase in the pressure loss and heat transfer characteristics as can be expected.
