The fatigue strength of a nickel-base superalloy was studied. Stress-controlled fatigue tests were carried out at $700^{\circ}C$ and 5 Hz using triangular wave forms. In this study, two kinds of testing procedures were adopted. One is the conventional tension-zero fatigue test(R = 0). The other was a procedure in which the maximum stress was held at 1000 MPa and the minimum stress was diverse from zero to 1000 MPa at 24 and $700^{\circ}C$. The results of the fatigue tests at $700^{\circ}C$ indicate that the fracture mechanism changed according to both the mean stress and the stress range. At a higher stress range, ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ precipitates are sheared by a/2<110> dislocation pairs coupled by APB. Therefore, in a large stress range, the deformation occurred by shearing of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ by a/2<110> dislocations, which brought about crystallographic shear fracture. As the stress range was decreased, the fracture mode gradually changed from crystallographic shear fracture to gradual growth of fatigue cracks. At an intermediate stress range, as it became more difficult for a/2<110> dislocation pairs to shear ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particles, cracks started to propagate in the matrix, avoiding the harder ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particles. High mean stress induced creep deformation, that is, ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particles were sheared by {111}<112> slip systems, which led to the formation of stacking faults in the precipitates. Thus, the change in fracture mechanism brought about the inversion of the S-N curves.

In order to investigate the characteristics of the shear strength of the unsaturated cohesive soils which has mean characters of sand and clay widely used for banking, I selected soil samples from An-sung district and, against it, performed direct shear test and unconfined compression test changing grain size, compaction energy and moisture content and also performed triaxial compression test under optimum moisture content. The results are as follows; 1.As the passing percent of the No. 200 sieve increased from 23.6% to 56.1%, cohesion increased from 0. 202kg/cm2 to 0. 398kg/cm2 under the direct shear test and from 0.38 kg/cm2 to 1. 05kg/cm2 under the tria4al compression test, internal friction angle decreased from 44. 78$^{\circ}$ to 34. 34$^{\circ}$ under the direct shear test and from 31. 88$^{\circ}$ to 13. 31$^{\circ}$ under the triaxial compression test. 2.Cohesion showed it's maximum value around OMC and internal friction angle showed a tendency to increase according to the decrease of water content but it's increasing ratio was relatively slow. 3.Decreasing ratio of cohesion and internal friction angle was relatively sensitive according to the decrease of compaction energy. 4.The smaller of the vertical stress and the coarser of the grain size of samples, changing of the volume showed a tendency to increase and as the increase of water content, the shear displacement (dh) at failure shear stress ($\tau$f) showed maximum and the $\tau$f-dh curve was gentle. 5.To synthesize the results of the direct shear test and the triaxial compression test, cohesion showed higher under the triaxial compression test and internal friction angle showed a tendeney to appear higher under the direct shear test. It seems that we can get correspondent results by removing the side friction of mold with soils and adjusting the vertical stress and shearing speed under the direct shear test.

In installation of groundwater wells, grouting materials are injected between the groundwater borehole and the inner casing in order to prevent infiltration of contaminated groundwater from the top soil layers into wells. The injection device of grouting materials is commonly composed of an inlet head device with an expansion packer, a cylinder capable of storing the grouting materials, and an air cylinder. In this work, two types of common grouting materials, silicon and cement materials, were tested for their performances as grouting media. For silicon. silicon was mixed with clay or calcite, and tested for their tensile strength and underwater reactivity. Both silicon-clay and silicon-calcite mixtures had adequate flow and adhesiveness. For cement material, general cement, ultra-rapid harding cement, and natural cement were respectively mixed with three different soil types including coarse-grained granite, fine-grained granite, and gneiss, and direct shearing tests were conducted after hardening. Under grouting depth condition of 30 m, the minimum adhesive strength was greater for weathered gneiss than non-weathered gneiss with its maximum values obtained from the mixtures of ultra rapid-harding cement.
In lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the stress induced by the volume change of an electrode during charge-discharge processes may often cause the mechanical integrity of the electrode to degrade. Polymer binders with enhanced mechanical properties are preferred for improved mechanical integrity and cycling stability of the electrode. In addition, given that sliding and shearing between the polymer binder and components in the electrode may readily occur, frictional and adhesion characteristics of the polymer binder may play a critical role in the mechanical integrity of the electrode. In this study, frictional and adhesion characteristics of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were investigated using a colloidal probe atomic force microscope. Friction loops were obtained under various normal forces ranging from 0 to 159 nN in air and electrolyte and then the interfacial shear strengths of PAN and PVDF in air were calculated to be $1.4{\pm}0.5$ and $1.3{\pm}0.3MPa$, respectively. The results show that in electrolyte, interfacial shear strength of PAN decreased slightly ($1.2{\pm}0.2MPa$), whereas that of PVDF decreased drastically ($0.06{\pm}0.01MPa$). Decreases in mechanical properties and adhesion in electrolyte may be responsible for the decrease in interfacial shear strength in electrolyte. The findings from this study may be helpful in developing polymer binders to improve the mechanical integrity of electrodes in LIBs.
The unsaturated behavior of sandy silt (SM soil) was investigated experimentally. Special attention was given to the stress-strain behavior of unsaturated weathered soil (SM) prior to failure and behavior at failure under monotonic loading. A sandy silt (SM) weathered soil containing a certain amount of fine contents distributed in Korea, was chosen to form samples with different densities of Dr=25%, 60%, and 75%. and matric suctions. The isotopically Consolidated Drain test (CD-test) was performed to maintain a constant matric suction during the shearing process. Based on the experimental results, it was qualitatively identified that the higher the relative density, the greater the virtual friction angle (ϕb) value and AEV (Air Entry Value) were induced. Also it is found that the internal friction angle (ϕ') is more or less constant. even if the matric suction is increased.

Advanced nonlinear effective stress constitutive models are started to be frequently used in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) site response analysis for assessment of porewater generation and liquefaction potential in soft soil deposits. The emphasis of this research is on the assessment of the implementation of this category of models at the element stage. Initially, the performance of a coupled porewater pressure (PWP) and constitutive models were evaluated employing a catalogue of 40 unidirectional cyclic simple shear tests with a variety of relative densities between 35% and 80% and effective vertical stresses between 40 and 80 kPa. The authors evaluated three coupled constitutive models (PDMY02, PM4SAND and PDMY03) using cyclic direct simple shear tests and for decide input parameters used in the model, procedures are recommended. The ability of the coupled model to capture dilation as strength is valuable because the studied models reasonably capture the cyclic performance noted in the experiments and should be utilized to conduct effective stress-based 1D and 2D site response analysis. Sandy soils may become softer and liquefy during earthquakes as a result of pore-water pressure (PWP) development, which may have an impact on seismic design and site response. The tested constitutive models are mathematically coupled with a cyclic strain-based PWP generation model and can capture small-strain stiffness and large-strain shear strength. Results show that there are minor discrepancies between measured and computed excess PWP ratios, indicating that the tested constitutive models provide reasonable estimations of PWP increase during cyclic shear (ru) and the banana shape is reproduced in a proper way indicating that dilation and shear- strain behavior is well captured by the models.
Soils around a pile are highly constrained when the vertical load is applied to the pile. However, the conventional direct shear test cannot evaluate the shear strength of the soils under the normal confinement condition. The goal of this study is to evaluate the shear behaviors according to the normal displacement confinement condition including free normal displacement (FND) and constrained normal displacement (CND) during direct shearing. Jumunjin sands were prepared at the different relative densities and loaded at the different normal stresses. The specimens were sheared according to the normal confinement conditions. Experimental results show that shear strengths obtained by the CND tests are higher than those obtained by the FND tests. In addition, for the constrained normal displacement condition, the increment of shear strength increases with the increase of relative density, while the increment of shear strength decreases with the initial normal stress. This study suggests that the effect of confinement condition on the shear strength should be considered when the stability of constrained soils is analyzed.
Shearing strength test in tension type was investigated to determine the shear resistance of bolt and drift-pin connection of domestic larix glulam. The specimen was connected with bolt and drift-pin in the inserted plate type, and only bolt in the side plate type. The diameter of bolt and drift-pin used in the experiment are 12, 16 and 20 mm. The hole of bolt was drilled at the end-distance 5 d and 7 d. Tension load was loaded in the direction parallel to grain. The shear resistance was evaluated according to end-distance through this, the yield load was compared with the experimental yield load, using Larsen's formula. The prototype design strength is based on the yield load of end-distance 7 d and the reduction factor of end-distance 5 d was calculated. The results were as follows. 1. The average of maximum load of drift-pin connection was higher by 3~30% at the inserted type than at bolt connection with increasing diameter. In bolt connection, the average of maximum load of the side type was 1.54~2.07 times higher than that of the inserted type. In the same diameter, the average of maximum load of end-distance 7 d was higher by 8~44% than that of 5 d. 2. The bearing stress was 1.16~1.41 times higher at the inserted connection than at drift-pin connection, and 1.37~1.86 times higher at 7 d than at 5 d. Also, when the slenderness ratio was below 7.5 at drift-pin connection and below 6.0 at inserted connection, the lateral capacity was good. 3. The ratio of the experimental yield load and the predicted yield load calculated by Larsen's formula proposed by Larsen was 0.80~1.10 at inserted connection, and 0.75~1.46 at side connection. 4. When the inserted bolt connection was based on the yield load of end-distance 7 d, the reduction factor was 0.89 at 12 mm connection, 0.93 at 16 mm and 0.85 at 20 mm. The reduction factor was 0.89 at 12 mm the inserted drift-pin connection, 0.93 at 16 mm, 0.93 at 20 mm. The reduction factor was 0.79 at the side connection of the 12 mm bolt connection and 0.80 at 16 mm.

For accurate laboratory evaluations of soil deposits, it is essential that the samples are undisturbed. An artificial ground-freezing system is the one of the most effective methods for obtaining undisturbed samples from sand deposits. The objective of this study is to estimate the shear strengths and the characteristics of elastic waves of frozen-thawed and unfrozen specimens through the undrained triaxial compression test. For the experiments, Jumunjin standard sands are used to prepare frozen and unfrozen specimens with similar relative densities (60% and 80%). The water pluviation method is used to simulate the fully saturated condition under the groundwater table. When thawing the frozen specimens, the temperature is measured every minute. After the specimens are completely thawed, undrained triaxial compression tests are conducted using the same procedures as for the unfrozen specimens. During the triaxial tests (saturation, consolidation, and shear phase), compressional and shear waves are measured. The results show that the freeze-thaw process has minor effects on the peak deviatoric stress and shear strength values, and that the process does not affect the internal friction angle. The compressional wave velocity increases with increasing B-value to 1800 m/s in the saturation phase, but tends to remain constant in the process of consolidation and shearing. The shear wave velocity decreases with increasing B-value in the process of saturation, but changes velocity in accordance with the change in effective stress in the processes of consolidation and shearing. The compressional wave velocity has similar values regardless of the freeze-thaw process, but values of shear wave velocity are slighly lower in frozen-thawed specimens than in unfrozen specimens. This study is a preliminary experiment for estimating the shear strength and characteristics of elastic wave velocity in undisturbed frozen specimens that have been obtained using the artificial ground-freezing method.
It was found that surface roughness has a first-order effect on the interface shear strength and accordingly it should be accurately quantified if its role is to be properly understood. Most of the surface roughness parameters are based on the trisector approach (three dimensional parameter) which can provide a good measure of the surface roughness from a static perspective. However, if roughness is to be correlated with a directional sensitive parameter such as interface shear then a two dimensional parameter could be more meaningful if the roughness measurements are made parallel to the direction of shearing. In this paper, alternative roughness parameters which consider the direction of shearing are described. These directional parameters are compared with the existing roughness parameters, and the relationship between these directional and non-directional parameters are investigated. The surface roughness was quantified by using the Optical Profile Microscopy (OPM) method (Dove and Frost, 1996) based on the digital image analysis. The results showed that the various surface roughness parameters measured in this study exhibit similar trend of roughness values, so that, good relationships are obtained between these roughness parameters. As the surface roughness increases, the roughness values measured in trisector coupons are increasing higher than those measured in parallel coupons.
