Material Nonlinear Analysis of the RC Shells Considering Tension Stiffening Effects (인장강성 효과를 고려한 RC 쉘의 재료비선형 해석)

  • In this study, material nonlinear finite element program is developed to analyze reinforced concrete shell of arbitrary geometry considering tension stiffening effects. This study is capable of tracing the load-deformation response and crack propagation, as well as determining the internal concrete and steel stresses through the elastic, inelastic and ultimate ranges in one continuous computer analysis. The cracked shear retention factor is introduced to estimate the effective shear modulus including aggregate interlock and dowel action. The concrete is assumed to be brittle in tension and elasto-plastic in compression. The Drucker-Prager yield criterion and the associated flow rule are adopted to govern the plastic behavior of the concrete. The reinforcing bars are considered as a steel layer of equivalent thickness. A layered isoparametric flat finite element considering the coupling effect between the in-plane and the bending action was developed. Mindlin plate theory taking account of transverse shear deformation was used. An incremental tangential stiffness method is used to obtain a numerical solution. Numerical examples about reinforced concrete shell are presented. Validity of this method is studied by comparing with the experimential results of Hedgren and the numerical analysis of Lin.

Diagonal Tension Failure Model for RC Slender Beams without Shear Reinforcement Based on Kinematical Conditions (II) - Verification

  • In a companion paper, a rational mechanical model to predict the entire behavior of point-loaded RC slender beams (a/d > 2.5) without shear reinforcement was developed. This paper presents the test results of 9 slender shear beams and compares them with analytical results performed by the proposed model. They are grouped by two parameters, which are shear span ratio and concrete strength. Three kinds of concrete strength the 26.5, 39.2, and 58.8 MPa were included as a major experimental parameter together with different shear span ratios ranging from 3 to 6 depending on the test series. Tests were set up as a traditional 3 point bending test. Various measurements were taken to monitor abrupt shear failure. Test results were not only compared with analytical results from the proposed model, but also other formulas, to consider the various aspects of shear failure such as kinematical conditions or shear capacity. Finally, a review of the proposed model is presented with respect to the shear transfer mechanisms and the effect of test parameters. Results show that several assumptions and proposals adopted in the proposed model are rational and reasonable.

Shear behavior of RC beams externally strengthened and anchored with CFRP composites

  • The primary objective of this paper is to study the effectiveness of anchorage on the performance of shear deficient beams externally strengthened with CFRP composites. The overall behavior of the tested beams loaded up to failure, the onset of the cracking, and crack development with increased load and ductility were described. The use of CFRP composites is an effective technique to enhance the shear capacity of RC beams by using CFRP strips anchored into the tension side and from the top by 15-34% based on the investigated variables. Bonded anchorage of CFRP strips with width of 0.1h-0.3h to the beam resulted in a decrease in average interface bond stress and an increase in the effective strain of the FRP sheet at failure, which resulted in a higher shear capacity as compared with that of the U-wrapped beams without anchorage as well as delay or mitigate the sheet debonding from the concrete surface.

  • Experimental study was conducted to investigate the flexural-shear behavior of hooked steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete (SFRHC) beams. Twenty beams with shear span-depth ratio of 1.45 were tested, of which variables were the contents of steel fiber with aspect ratio of 60, tension reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive of 60MPa and 80MPa. Test results has shown that shear failure of the beams were changed into flexural-shear failure or flexural failure according to increasing steel fiber content, that SFRHC with slump of 15cm over and fiber volume ratio of 1.5% was possible in practice, and that proper volume ratio of steel fiber was 1.5%.

  • In general, the shear behavior mode of URM wall expresses four types of modes such as rocking failure, sliding shear failure, toe crushing failure, and diagonal tension failure. From the comparison of each equation according to the shear behavior modes, the failure modes based on the aspect ratio and vertical axial stress can be expected. The objectives of this study is to find out the shear behavior of URM wall with different aspect ratio. The test results show that the aspect ratio is understood as an important variable.

Repeated Loading Tests of Reinforced Concrete Beams Containing Headed Shear Reinforcement (Headed Shear Bar를 사용한 콘크리트 보의 반복 하중 실험)

  • The repeated loading responses of four shear-critical reinforced concrete beams, with two different shear span-to-depth ratios, were studied. One series of beams was reinforced using pairs of bundled stirrups with $90^{\circ}C$ standard hooks, having free end extensions of $6d_b$. The companion beams contained shear reinforcement made with larger diameter headed bars anchored with 50mm diameter circular heads. A single headed bar had the same area as a pair of bundled stirrups and hence the two series were comparable. The test results indicate that beams containing headed bar stirrups have a superior performance to companion beams containing bundled standard stirrups, with improved ductility, larger energy adsorption and enhanced post-peak load carrying capability. Due to splitting of the concrete cover and local crushing, the hooks of the standard stirrups opened, resulting in loss of anchorage. In contrast, the headed bar stirrups did not lose their anchorage and hence were able to develop strain hardening and also served to delay buckling of the flexural compression steel. Excellent load-deflection predictions were obtained by reducing the tension stiffening to account for repeated load effects.

  • This study is to propose a truss model which is able to reasonably predict the shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) members with high-strength materials. The shear strengths of 107 RC test beams with high-strength steel bars reported in the technical literatures were compared to those obtained from proposed model, TATM, and existing truss models. The shear strength of reinforced concrete beams obtained from test was better predicted by TATM than other truss models. Also, the theoretical results by TATM were almost constant regardless of yield strengths and steel ratios of tension and shear reinforcements.

Experimental and analytical investigation of the shear behavior of strain hardening cementitious composites

  • The mechanical behavior of Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (FRCC) under direct shear is studied through experiment and analytical simulation. The cementitious composite considered contains 55% replacement of cement with fly ash and 2% (volume ratio) of short discontinuous synthetic fibers (in the form of mass reinforcement, comprising PVA - Polyvinyl Alcohol fibers). This class of cementitious materials exhibits ductility under tension with the formation of multiple fine cracks and significant delay of crack stabilization (i.e., localization of cracking at a single location). One of the behavioral parameters that concern structural design is the shear strength of this new type of fiber reinforced composites. This aspect was studied in the present work with the use of Push-off tests. The shear strength is then compared to the materials' tensile and splitting strength values.

Material Properties for Reliability Improvement in the FEA Results for Rubber Parts (고무 제품 유한요소해석 결과의 신뢰 향상을 위한 물성치 연구)

  • We studied the material properties for reliability improvement in finite element analysis results for a nitrile butadiene rubber hub-bearing seal and for a carbon-filled rubber mount used in a vehicle. It was difficult to measure the material properties of hundreds of types of rubber for the mount design. Thus, we suggested that the engineering stressstrain relations from pure shear test data could be synthesized by using simple tension data and Poisson's ratio. We defined Poisson's ratio by using a function of principal stretches to synthesize the stress-strain relations for a pure shear test. A transformation of the pure shear data was applied to the experimental values to obtain the predicted results when the strain approaches 100%. In the finite element analysis for the contact force of a hub-bearing seal, the strain results that used the transformation of the pure shear data and simple tension data almost corresponded to the experimental values.   • This study investigates the shear behavior of architectural masonry veneer wall reinforced with specific reinforcement details proposed by this study. For this purpose, experimental tests were conducted using one un-reinforced masonry(URM) wall specimen and three reinforced masonry(RM) wall specimens under quasi static cyclic loads. Un-reinforced(plain) masonry wall is expressed that behavior and failure mode are different for aspect ratio(L/H) and axial compressive force. The test variables are wall aspect ratio and presence of reinforcement. These specimens are masonry structure for architectural clading that is not to exist the axial compressive force. thus the axial compressive force is excepted from test variable. Test result, Behavior of specimens are dominated over rocking mode, but final failure modes are combined with different behaviors. And FEMA273 has proposed the equation of shear strength of masonry pier subjected to in-plane loading. Shear strength equations are classified four types of failure mode that is Rocking, and Toe-Crushing, Bed-Joint-Sliding and Diagonal-Tension. FEMA273 equations predict the behavior modes well, but shear strength is shown in different result.
