Stone masonry structures are widely used around the world, but they deteriorate easily, due to low shear strength capacity. Many techniques have been developed to increase the shear strength of stone masonry constructions. The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the performance of stone masonry walls strengthened by metal connectors as an alternative shear reinforcement technique. For this purpose, three new metal connector (clamp) types were developed. The shear strength of the walls was improved by applying these clamps to stone masonry walls. Ten stone masonry walls were structurally tested in diagonal compression. Various parameters regarding the in-plane behavior of strengthening stone masonry walls, including shear strength, failure modes, maximum drift, ductility, and shear modulus, were investigated. Experimentally obtained shear strengths were confirmed by empirical equations. The results of the study suggest that the new clamps developed for the study effectively increased the levels of shear strength and ductility of masonry constructions.
This study presents test results of RC beams strengthened by steel plates, carbon fiber sheets(CFS) and aramid fiber sheets(AFS) for increasing flexural and shear resistance. The test was performed with different parameters including the type of strengthening materials, flexural-strengthening methods and shear-strengthening methods. In case of flexural test, RC beams are initially loaded to 70% of the ultimate flexural capacity and in case of shear test loaded to 60 or 80 percent of the ultimate shear capacity and subsequently reinforced with steel plates, CFS and AFS. Experimental data on strength, steel strain, deflection, and mode of failure of the reinforced beams were obtained, and comparisons between the different shear reinforced schemes and the non-strengthened control beams were made. The test results showed that damaged RC beams strengthened by steel plates, CFS and AFS have more improved the flexural and shear capacity. For the beams with external reinforcement by steel plates, aramid fiber sheets and carbon fiber sheets increases in ultimate strength of 4 to 21, 17 to 43 and 26 to 36 percent were respectively achieved. Initial load had small effect on strength after reinforcement, but an important influence on deflection. One sheet reinforced was stronger than two sheets reinforced but less deflected than two sheets reinforced.

Researches on strengthening and rehabilitation methods are being widely conducted due to the deterioration of existing concrete structures. Use of externally bonded Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) strips for the rehabilitation is a cost-effective and time-saving method. Generally, the CFRP layout for the shear strengthening was a uni-directional layout. Many researches have focused on the variables of the uni-directional CFRP layout such as the amount of material, angle, and spacing. Pilot tests indicated that the effective confinement of the concrete member can be provided with the bi-directional CFRP layout than the uni-directional layout. Therefore, the test was carried out after the uni- and bi-directional strengthening work using the same amount of CFRP material. CFRP anchors were installed to prevent unexpected premature CFRP delamination failure before reaching CFRP fracture strain. The effectiveness of the CFRP anchor and bi-directional CFRP layout for shear strengthening was verified based on the principal tensile strain contours.

This paper presents the results of the experimental study on the performances of reinforced concrete beams rehabilitated by external unbonded high tension steel-bar. Design variables for the experiment in this study includes the position of anchorage zone of the high tension steel bar, the anchorage length of the reinforcing steel bar and the types of the shear strengthening measures. 5 specimens were tested with one point monotonically increased loads and structural performances such as strength capacities, ductility capacities and failure modes were analysed. It is found that the structural performance of the rehabilitated beams are strongly depended on the location of anchorage zone of the high tension steel-bars. In the case that anchorage zone is located near the critical shear zone, it is observed that the rehabilitated beam is failed in brittle failure mode and the additional shear strengthening is necessitated. But if anchorage zone is properly located or additional shear strengthening device is provided properly, it is also observed that the strength capacity of the rehabilitated beams could be increased more than $200\%$ by the proposed method.
This paper presents results of an experimental study to evaluate a new retrofit technique for strengthening shear deficient short concrete beams and columns. In this technique a mortar jacket reinforced with expanded steel meshes is used for retrofitting. Twelve short reinforced concrete specimens, including eight retrofitted ones, were tested. Six specimens were tested under a constant compressive axial force of 15% of column axial load capacity based on original concrete gross section, $A_g$, and the concrete compressive strength, ${f_c}^{\prime}$. Main variables were the spacing of ties in original specimens and the volume fraction of expanded metal in jackets. Original specimens failed before reaching their nominal calculated flexural strength, $M_n$, and had very poor ductility. Strengthened specimens reached their nominal flexural strength and had a ductility capacity factor of up to 8 for the beams and up to 5.5 for the columns. Based on the test results, it can be concluded that expanded steel meshes can be used effectively to strengthen shear deficient concrete members.
In this study, the performance of shear deficient reinforced concrete (RC) beams with rectangular cross-sections, which were externally bonded reinforced (EBR) with high strength CFRP and GFRP strips composite along shear spans, has been experimentally and analytically investigated under vertical load. In the study, the minimum CFRP and GFRP strips width over spacing were considered. The shear beam with turned end to a bending beam was investigated by applying different composite strips. Therefore various arising in each of strength, ductility, rigidity, and energy dissipation capacity were obtained. A total of 12 small-scaled experimental programs have been performed. Beam dimensions have been taken as 100×150×1000 mm. Four beams have been tested as unstrengthened samples. This paper focuses on the effect of minimum CFRP and GFRP strip width on behaviours of RC beams shear-strengthened with full-wrapping, U-wrapping, and U-wrapping+longitudinal bonding strips. Strengthened beams showed significant increments for flexural ductility, energy dissipation, and inelastic performance. The full wrapping strips applied against shear failure have increased the load-carrying capacity of samples 53%-63% interval rate. Although full wrapping is the best strengthening choice, the U-wrapping and U-wrapping+longitudinal strips of both CFRP and GFRP bonding increased the shear capacity by 53%~75% compared to the S2 sample. In terms of ductility, the best result has been obtained by the type of strengthening where the S5 beam was completely GFRP wrapped. The experimental results were also compared with the analytically given by ACI440.2R-17, TBEC-2019 and FIB-2001. Especially in U-wrapped beams, the estimation of FIB was determined to be 81%. The estimates of the other codes are far from meeting the experimental results; therefore, essential improvements should be applied to the codes, especially regarding CFRP and GFRP deformation and approaches for longitudinal strip connections. According to the test results, it is suggested that GFRP, which is at least as effective but cheaper than CFRP, may be preferred for strengthening applications.

This paper was aimed to investigate the shear strengthening effect of the pre-loaded reinforced concrete beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet (CFS). Main tet parameters was the magnitude of pre-loading at the time of the retrofit and the strengthening method of carbon fiber sheet. A series of nine specimens was tested to evaluate the corresponding effect of each parameters such as maximum load capacity, load-deflection relationship, and failure mode. The results of this study showed that the failure mode is bonding failure between the concrete and the CFS before the tensile failure strain of the CFS is reached.
Beams strengthened in shear with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) which had different transverse reinforcement ratio were tested to evaluate shear contribution in the CFRP and to analyze shear behavior of each test with Mohr's circle. Strain in the CFRP should be evaluated to estimate the shear contribution in the CFRP which is brittle material. Test results were compared each other based on the Mohr's circle which can correlate shear strain with both principal tensile strain and crack angle. With low transverse steel ratio, shear strengthening with CFRP not only increases the shear strength effectively but also minimizes the loss in shear contribution of concrete by limiting the development of crack. With high transverse steel ratio, the effect on shear strengthening with CFRP is not as much as the beam with low ratio. Therefore, the shear contribution in the CFRP should be evaluated based on the strain compatibility which can consider the interaction between steel and CFRP when determining the shear capacity of a strengthened member.

The present experimental study addresses the structural response of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in shear. Thirteen RC beams were divided into four different sets to investigate the effect of transverse and longitudinal steel reinforcement ratios, concrete compressive strength change and orientation for installing carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. Then, we employed a shear strengthening solution through externally bonded reinforcement in grooves (EBRIG) and externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) techniques. In this regard, rectangular beams of $200{\times}300{\times}2000mm$ dimensions were subjected to the 4-point static loading condition and their load-displacement curves, load-carrying capacity and ductility changes were compared. The results revealed that using EBRIG method, the gain percentage augmented with the increase in the longitudinal reinforcement ratio. Also, in the RC beams with stirrups, the gain in shear strength decreased as transverse reinforcement ratio increased. The results also revealed that the shear resistance obtained by the experimental tests were in acceptable agreement with the design equations. Besides, the results of this research indicated that using the EBRIG system through vertical grooves in RC beams with and without stirrups caused the energy absorption to increase about 85% and 97%, respectively, relative to the control.
Unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings are extensively adopted in many of the growing nations, particularly in India. Window or door openings are required for architectural or functional reasons, which pose a threat to the building's safety. The past earthquakes have shown that the seismic capability of these structures was very weak. Strengthening these unreinforced masonry walls using welded wire mesh (WWM) is one of the most commonly and economical methods. The present experimental study investigates the impact of openings on the shear behaviour of URM walls and the effectiveness of WWM in enhancing the shear performance of masonry wall. In the experimental program 16 specimens were cast, 8 unstrengthen and 8 strengthened specimens, under 8 unstrengthen and strengthened specimens, every 2 specimens had 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% openings and all these walls were tested under diagonal compression. The results show that the shear carrying capacity reduces as the opening percentage increases. However, strengthening the URM specimens using WWM significantly improves the peak load, shear strength, ductility, stiffness, and energy dissipation. Furthermore, the strengthening of the URM walls using WWM compensated the loss of wall capacity caused by the presence of the openings.
