In Half Precast Concrete Method, such as composite slab and composite wall, Interface between half PC plate and cast-in-place concrete is occurred. And this interface endure lastly in-plane shear which is occurred by external force. Therefore, test was executed to study in-plane shear strength of interface between half PC plate and cast-in-place concrete. In this test, Experimental parameters are finishing condition of the interface, cohesion of concrete, existence and nonexistence of re-bar truss, and angle and direction of lattice of re-bar truss. Comparing and analyzing experimental results, conclusions are obtained as follows. (1) In-plane shear strength of wide interface in composite plate is more affected by the roughness of interface than re-bar truss. And cohesion of concrete contribute to increasing in-plane shear strength. Therefore it seems that the interface should be roughen and kept clean to improve in-plane shear strength. (2) It seems that shear friction equation in ACI code can be sagely available for design of in-plane shear of composite plate.
Punching/blanking/shearing is among the oldest and most frequently used sheet metal forming process. We have developed the shear device for burrless cutting using the micro wire. Since the burr minimization and fine shear plane, this paper is a study on the effect of the shear angle and clearance of the cutter-cutter. And, we confirm the tendency of the shear plane. It is impossible to completely remove the burr in the shearing process. In order to minimize the burr size and fine shear plane, we have accomplished the various experiment conditions such as the shear angle and clearance. Despite the quality of shear plane is not good enough yet, it is possible to make the burr minimization and fine shear plane by the optimization of process parameters.
This paper presents a four-variable first-order shear deformation theory considering in-plane rotation of functionally graded plates. In recent studies, a simple first-order shear deformation theory was developed and extended to functionally graded plates. It has only four variables, separating the deflection into bending and shear parts, while the conventional first-order shear deformation theory has five variables. However, this simple first-order shear deformation theory only provides good predictions for simply supported plates since it does not consider in-plane rotation varying through the thickness of the plates. The present theory also has four variables, but considers the variation of in-plane rotation such that it is able to correctly predict the responses of the plates with any boundary conditions. Analytical solutions are obtained for rectangular plates with various boundary conditions. Comparative studies demonstrate the effects of in-plane rotation and the accuracy of the present theory in predicting the responses of functionally graded plates.
As shear localization is observed in different deformation modes, an attempt is made to understand the conditions for shear localization in general deformation modes. Most emphasis in put upon the effects of pre-localization deformation mode on the onset of shear localization and all the other well-recognized effects of subtle constitutive features and imperfection sensitivity studied elsewhere are not investigated here. Rather, an approximate perturbation stability analysis is performed for simplified isotropic rigid-plastic solids subjected to general mode of homogeneous deformation. Shear localization is possible in any deformation mode if the material has strain softening. The incipient rate of shear localization and shear plane orientations are strongly dependent upon the pre-localization deformation mode. Significant strain softening is necessary for shear localization in homogeneous axisymmetric deformation modes while infinitesimal strain softening is necessary for shear localization in plane strain deformation mode. In any deformation mode, there are more than one shear plane orientation. Except for homogeneous axisymmetric deformation modes, there are two possible shear plane orientations with respect to the principal directions of stretching. Some well-known examples are discussed in the light of the current analysis.
The steel slit shear wall (SSSW), made by cutting vertical slits in a steel plate, is increasingly used for the seismic protection of building structures. In the domain of thin plate shear walls, the out-of-plane buckling together with the potential fracture developed at slit ends at large lateral deformation may result in degraded shear strength and energy dissipation, which is not desirable in view of seismic design. To address this issue, the present study proposed a new type of SSSW made by intentionally introducing initial out-of-plane folding into the originally flat slitted plate. Quasi-static cyclic tests on three SSSWs with different amplitudes of introduced out-of-plane folding were conducted to study their shear strength, elastic stiffness, energy dissipation capacity and buckling behavior. By introducing proper amplitude of out-of-plane folding into the SSSW fracture at slit ends was eliminated, plumper hysteretic behavior was obtained and there was nearly no strength degradation. A method to estimate the shear strength and elastic stiffness of the new SSSW was also proposed.

The assessment of slope stability is an essential task in geotechnical engineering. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to investigate the performance of different shear pin arrangements to increase the stability of a soil block resting on an inclined plane with a low-interface friction plane. In the numerical models, the soil block was modeled by volume elements with linear elastic perfectly plastic material in a drained condition, while the shear pins were modeled by volume elements with linear elastic material. Interface elements were used along the bedding plane (bedding interface element) and around the shear pins (shear pin interface element) to simulate the soil-structure interaction. Bedding interface elements were used to capture the shear sliding of the soil on the low-interface friction plane while shear pin interface elements were used to model the shear bonding of the soil around the pins. A failure analysis was performed by means of the gravity loading method. The results of the 3D FEA with the numerical models were compared to those with the physical models for all cases. The effects of the number of shear pins, the shear pin locations, the different shear pin arrangements, the thickness and the width of the soil block and the associated failure mechanisms were discussed.
In order to investigate shear behavior of granular materials due to excavation and associated unloading actions, load-controlled plane strain compression tests under decreasing confining pressure were performed under drained conditions and the results were compared with the conventional plane strain compression tests. Four types of granular material consisting of two quartz sands and two glass beads were used to investigate particle shape effects. It is clarified that macro stress-strain behavior is more easily influenced by stress level and stress path in sands than in glass beads. Development of localized deformation was analyzed using photogrammetry method. It was found that shear bands are generated before peak strength and shear band patterns vary during the whole shearing process. Under the same test condition, shear band thickness in the two sands was smaller than that in one type of glass beads even if the materials have almost the same mean particle size. Shear band thickness also decreased with increase of confining pressure regardless of particle shape or size. Local maximum shear strain inside shear band grew approximately linearly with global axial strain from onset of shear band to the end of softening. The growth rate is found related to shear band thickness. The wider shear band, the relatively lower the growth rate. Finally, observed shear band inclination angles were compared with classical Coulomb and Roscoe solutions and different results were found for sands and glass beads.
The objective of this present work is to estimate the failure loads, associated maximum transverse displacements, locations and the modes of failure, including the onset of delamination, of thin, square symmetric laminates under the action in-plane positive (+ve) shear load. Two progressive failure analyses, one using the Hashin criterion and the other using a Tensor polynomial criterion, are used in conjunction with finite element method. First order shear deformation theory along with geometric non-linearity in the von Karman sense have been employed. Variation of failure loads and failure characteristics with five type of lay-ups and three types of boundary conditions has been investigated in detail. It is observed that the maximum difference between failure loads predieted by various criteria depends strongly on the laminate lay-up and the flexural boundary restraint. Laminates with clamped edges are found to be more susceptible to failure due to transverse shear (ensuing from the out of plane bending) and delamination, while those with simply supported edges undergo total collapse at a load slightly higher than the fiber failure load. The investigation on negative (-ve) in-plane shear load is in progress and will be communicated as part-II of the present work.
This study, push-off tests for the initially uncracked specimens were conducted to investigate shear transfer mechanism in reinforce concrete elements. Experimental programs for shear transfer were undertaken to investigate the effect of the concrete compressive strength, the presence of steel stirrups as shear reinforcement and the amount of steel stirrups. As the shear plane is loaded, several cracks form in a direction inclined to the shear plane, creating compression struts in the concrete. For this stage, shear is being transferred through a truss-like action produced by the combination of the compressive force in the concrete struts and the tensile force that the steel reinforcement crossing the shear plane develops. In the normal strength concrete specimens with steel stirrups, ultimate failure occurred when the compression struts crushed in concrete. In the high strength concrete specimens, on the other hand, ultimate failure occurred when the steel stirrups developed their yield strength.
Theoretical and numerical assessments of approximate evaluations and simplified analyses of piezoelectric structures transverse shear modal effective electromechanical coupling coefficient (EMCC) are presented. Therefore, the latter is first introduced theoretically and its approximate evaluations are reviewed; then, three-dimensional (3D) and simplified two-dimensional (2D) plane-strain (PStrain) and plane-stress (PStress) piezoelectric constitutive behaviors of electroded shear piezoceramic patches are derived and corresponding expected short-circuit (SC) and open-circuit (OC) frequencies and resulting EMCC are discussed; next, using a piezoceramic shear sandwich beam cantilever typical benchmark, a 3D finite element (FE) assessment of different evaluation techniques of the shear modal effective EMCC is conducted, including the equipotential (EP) constraints effect; finally, 2D PStrain and PStress FE modal analyses under SC and OC electric conditions, are conducted and corresponding results (SC/OC frequencies and resulting effective EMCC) are compared to 3D ones. It is found that: (i) physical EP constraints reduce drastically the shear modal effective EMCC; (ii) PStress and PStrain results depend strongly on the filling foam stiffness, rendering inadequate the use of popular equivalent single layer models for the transverse shear-mode sandwich configuration; (iii) in contrary to results of piezoelectric shunted damping and energy harvesting popular single-degree-of-freedom-based models, transverse shear modal effective EMCC values are very small in particular for the first mode which is the common target of these applications.
