  • In this paper, a closed-form rigorous solution for interfacial stress in continuous steel beam with variable section strengthened with bonded prestressed FRP plates and subjected to a uniformly distributed load is developed using linear elastic theory and including the variation of fiber volume fractions with a longitudinal orientation of the fibers of the FRP plates. The results show that there exists a high concentration of both shear and normal stress at the ends of the laminate, which might result in premature failure of the strengthening scheme at these locations. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions. Overall, the predictions of the different solutions agree closely with each other. A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the sensitivity of interface behavior to parameters such as laminate and adhesive stiffness, the thickness of the laminate and the fiber volume fractions where all were found to have a marked effect on the magnitude of maximum shear and normal stress in the composite member. This research gives a numerical precision in relating to the others studies which neglect the effect of prestressed plate and the shear lag impact. The physical and geometric properties of materials are taken into account, and that may play an important role in reducing the interfacial stresses magnitude.

  • A general structural model, which is an extension of the Vlassov theory, is developed for the analysis of composite rotor blades with elastic couplings. A comprehensive analysis applicable to both thick-and thin-walled composite beams, which can have either open- or closed profile is formulated. The theory accounts for the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, and transverse shear deformations. A semi-complementary energy functional is used to account for the shear stress distribution in the shell wall. The bending and torsion related warpings and the shear correction factors are obtained in closed form as part of the analysis. The resulting first order shear deformation theory describes the beam kinematics in terms of the axial, flap and lag bending, flap and lag shear, torsion and torsion-warping deformations. The theory is validated against experimental results for various cross-section beams with elastic couplings.

  • A simple numerical modelling technique is proposed for estimating the shear stress distribution in beams of framed tube structures with multiple internal tubes. The structures are analysed using a continuum approach in which each tube is individually modelled by a tube beam that accounts for the flexural and shear deformations, as well as the shear lag effects. The method idealises the discrete tubes-in-tube structures as an assemblage of equivalent multiple beams, each composed of orthotropic plate panels. The numerical analysis of shear stress is based on the elastic theory in conjunction with the minimum potential energy principle. By simplifying assumptions regarding the form of strain distributions in external and internal tubes, the shear stress distributions are expressed in terms of a series of linear functions of the second moments of area of the structures and the corresponding geometric and material properties, as well as the applied loads. The simplicity and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated through the solutions of three numerical examples.

  • Theoretical efforts are performed to extend the formulation of NSLT(New Shear Lag Theory) for the prediction of the elastic modulus in short fiber composite. The formulation is based on the elastic stress transfer considering the stress concentration effects influenced by elastic modulus ratio between fiber and matrix. The composite modulus, thus far, is calculated by changing the fiber aspect ratio and volume fraction. It is found that the comparison with FEA(Finite Element Analysis) results gives a good agreement with the present theory (NSLT). It is also found that the NSLT is more accurate than the SLT(Shear Lag Theory) in short fiber regime when compared by FEA results. However, The modulus predicted by NSLT becomes similar values that of SLT when the fiber aspect ratio increases. Finally, It is shown that the present model has the capability to predict the composite modulus correctly in elastic regime.

  • In this paper, an improved theoretical interfacial stress analysis is presented for simply supported composite aluminum- sandwich honeycomb beam strengthened by imperfect FGM plateusing linear elastic theory. The adherend shear deformations have been included in the present theoretical analyses by assuming a linear shear stress through the thickness of the adherends, while all existing solutions neglect this effect. Remarkable effect of shear deformations of adherends has been noted in the results. It is shown that both the sliding and the shear stress at the interface are influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite beam. This new solution is intended for applicationto composite beams made of all kinds of materials bonded with a thin plate. Finally, numerical comparisons between the existing solutions and the present new solution enable a clear appreciation of the effects of various parameters.

  • The effective flange width was usually introduced into elementary beam theory to consider the shear lag effect in steel-concrete composite beams. Previous studies have primarily focused on the effective width under positive moments and elastic loading, whereas it is still not clear for negative moment cases in the normal service stages. To account for this problem, this paper proposed simplified formulas for the effective flange width and reinforcement stress of composite beams under negative moments in service stages. First, a 10-degree-of-freedom (DOF) fiber beam element considering the shear lag effect and interfacial slip effect was proposed, and a computational procedure was developed in the OpenSees software. The accuracy and applicability of the proposed model were verified through comparisons with experimental results. Second, a method was proposed for determining the effective width of composite beams under negative moments based on reinforcement stress. Employing the proposed model, the simplified formulas were proposed via numerical fitting for cases under uniform loading and centralized loading at the mid-span. Finally, based on the proposed formulas, a simplified calculation method for the reinforcement stress in service stages was established. Comparisons were made between the proposed formulas and design code. The results showed that the design code method greatly underestimated the contribution of concrete under negative moments, leading to notable overestimations in the reinforcement stress and crack width.

  • An overall feature to simulate composite behavior and to predict closed solution has been performed for the application to the stress analysis in a discontinuous composite solid. To obtain the internal field quantities of composite, the micromechanics analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) were implemented. For the numerical illustration, an aligned axisymmetric single fiber model has been employed to assess field quantities. Further, a micromechanics model to describe the elastic behavior of fiber or whisker reinforced metal matrix composites has been developed and the stress concentrations between reinforcements were investigated using the modified shear lag model with the comparions between reinforcements were investigated using the modified shear lag model with the comparison of finite element analysis (FEA). The rationale is based on the replacement of the matrix between fiber ends with the fictitious fiber to maintain the compatibility of displacement and traction. It was found that the new model gives a good agreement with FEA results in the small fiber aspect ratio regime as well as that in the large fiber aspect ratio regime. It was found that the proposed simulation methodology for stress analysis is applicable to the complicated inhomogeneous solid for the investigation of micromechanical behavior.

  • In this paper a simple mathematical model for approximate static analysis of combined system of framed tube, shear core and two outrigger-belt truss structures subjected to lateral loads is presented. In the proposed methodology, framed tube is modeled as a cantilevered beam with a box section and interaction between shear core and outrigger-belt truss system with framed tube is modeled using torsional springs placed at location of outrigger-belt truss; these torsional springs act in a direction opposite to rotation generated by lateral loads. The effect of shear lag on axial deformation in flange is quadratic and in web it is a cubic function of geometry. Here the total energy of the combined system is minimized with respect to lateral deflection and rotation in plane section. Solution of the resulting equilibrium equations yields the unknown coefficients of shear lag along with the stress and displacement distributions. The results of a numerical example, 50 storey building subjected to three different types of lateral loading obtained from SAP2000 are compared to those of the proposed method and the differences are found to be reasonable. The proposed method can be used during the preliminary design stages of a tall building and can provide a better understanding of the effects of various parameters on the overall structural behavior.

  • This paper presents a closed-form higher-order analysis of interfacial shear stresses in RC continuous beams strengthened with bonded prestressed laminates. For retrofitting reinforced concrete continuous beams is to bond fiber reinforced prestressed composite plates to their tensile faces. An important failure mode of such plated beams is the debonding of the composite plates from the concrete due to high level of stress concentration in the adhesive at the ends of the composite plate. The model is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility requirements in and all parts of the strengthened beam, where both the shear and normal stresses are assumed to be invariant across the adhesive layer thickness. In the present theoretical analysis, the adherend shear deformations are taken into account by assuming a parabolic shear stress through the thickness of both the RC continuous beams strengthened with bonded prestressed laminates. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions. A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the sensitivity of interface behavior to parameters such as laminate stiffness and the thickness of the laminate where all were found to have a marked effect on the magnitude of maximum shear and normal stress in the composite member.
