  • This paper is concerned with the design of optimal surface heating patterns that result in focusing acoustic energy inside a subsurface target volume at a specified target time. The surface of the solid is heated by an incident laser beam which gives rise to shear and compressional waves propagating into the solid. The optimal heating design process aims to achieve the desired energy focusing at the target with minimal laser power densities and minimal system disturbance away from the target. The optimality conditions are secured via the conjugated gradient method and by the finite element method along with using the half-space Green's function matrix. Good quality energy focusing is achived with the optimal designs reflecting the high directivity of the photothermally generated shear wave patterns.

  • This research tried to find out the optimum fabrication method of calcined clay granules comprising zeolite. Kaolin clay and natural zeolite powder were used as raw materials of calcined clay, and silica stone powder was used for controlling the porosity of the granules. The granulation was performed with two kinds of granulators: a pan granulator and a high-shear mixer granulator. Various granules were fabricated by the mixing ratios and the rotation speeds of the granulators, and were heated from 400 to $700^{\circ}C$ at $100^{\circ}C$ interval. The crushing strength, pore size distribution, and CEC of the granules were measured. The evaluation method for the resistance of granules to human treading was created and the tests were conducted at dry and wet conditions. The resistance and crushing strength improved in proportion to the rotation speed of the granulator and the heating temperature, but the CEC decreased. The pellet made by the pan granulator did not have the strength against treading upon heating to below $700^{\circ}C$, but the pellet made by the high-shear mixer granulator endured the treading test upon heating to over $500^{\circ}C$

  • The construction of waste landfill sites has been increased due to recent expansion of various waste. Geotextiles are widely used for the purpose of reinforcement and protection of waste inside the landfill. Geotextile affects the shear behavior of waste landfill which forms the contact surface with soil. In this study, the effect of acidic and alkaline components in leachate has been analyzed through the laboratory experiment on the shear stress reduction of the contact surface of ground-geotextile under the cyclic load. For this purpose, a dynamic contact surface shear tester has been manufactured, and cyclic simple shear tests have been performed using geotextile and soil specimen which were immersed in chemical solutions for 60 and 840 days, respectively. Based on the Disturbed State Concept, the characteristics of shear stress on the contact surface of ground-geotextile due to chemical factors have been identified by the disturbance function.

  • Elastometic bearings using flexible rubber materials have recently been widely applied for seismic retrofit of bridges. However, due to various factors, the aging of the rubber material progresses, which causes the shear stiffness change of the bearing, which affects the seismic performance of the bridge. For natural rubber, accelerated heat aging test was performed with variables of heating temperatures and exposure time to analyze shear characteristics. As aging progresses (i.e. increase of temperature and exposure time), the maximum shear stress and shear strain decrease. Also, the shear stiffness is greatly increased at the same shear strain. This means that the rubber material is hardened, implying that the seismic performance of the elastomeric bearing becomes poor.

  • The hot stamping process is widely used for high strength of vehicle parts, with heating 900 ℃ or higher in a furnace and in-die quenching to achieve strength above 1.5 GPa of the quenchable boron alloyed steel 22MnB5. First of all, the hot stamping process consisted of heating, forming, quenching and trimming. In the trimming process case, the laser method has been conventionally adopted. For laser trimming process, it has the problems pertaining to low productivity and high cost while the hot stamping process, accordingly the trimming process need to investigate the research for alternative method. In order to overcome these issues, many research groups have studied the mechanical trim solution on the hot stamped parts at high temperature. In this study, the mechanical piercing was performed during the hot stamping process at the high temperature for overcome the disadvantages of laser cutting. Also, the process parameters such as piercing time after die closing, clearances of between die and punch were controlled for obtaining the reasonable shear characteristics.

  • The suspension of hardened red blood cells (RBCs) differs from the suspension of normal RBCs with respect to their rheological behavior. The deformability of normal and hardened RBCs (obtained by heating blood at $49^{\circ}C$ or by incubating RBCs in a solution of hydrogen peroxide) was measured with a slit diffractometer and RBC suspension viscosity was measured with a rotational viscometer. The peroxide-treated RBCs showed a significant decrease of the deformability and their suspension viscosity increased over a range of shear rates. The suspension viscosity of the heated RBCs, however, where the deformability is even lower than that of the peroxide-treated RBCs, was slightly higher than that of the normal RBC suspension in the high shear rates. The present study found that not all rigid cells cause an increase of blood viscosity at high shear rate, and therefore that decreased membrane deformability is not predictive of high-shear blood viscosity.

  • Microstructural changes may arise due to the particle vanishing, fluid diffusion, heating, etc. This study focuses on the changes in small-strain shear stiffness in k0 loading produced by local straining in particular system made of sand-salt mixtures. Local strains were induced by dissolution of salt particles. Experiments were carried out in a conventional oedometer cell equipped with bender elements. Axial displacement and shear wave signals are recorded at each loading stage and during saturation process. Experimental data showed that microstructural changes due to particle vanishing were clearly captured by using shear wave measurement. Saturation of sand-salt mixture at a larger axial stress did not always create a more condense soil at the end of loading stage. Sand-salt mixture is useful for laboratory test on controlled artificial specimen.

  • This study summarizes the numerical analyses of a Ti alloy deformation under a back extrusion process. Amongst metallic parts in a small propulsion motor case, a Ti-6Al-4V alloy is used extensively. However, the Ti alloy shows a great deal of shear band formation which often leads to a fracture due to a narrow working temperature window. Moreover, the shear band tends to develop over an area where a contact occurs between the hot work piece and the die wall, due to localized cooling. Thus, heating the dies is often required to overcome the deformation localization. Therefore, it becomes necessary to investigate the internal temperature and strain rate distribution during forging process of a Ti alloy. Furthermore, a shear band analysis is peformed using a finite difference scheme and a comparison is made between steel and Ti alloy.

  • An improved method is presented for the prediction of heat transfer coefficients in turbulent fall-ing liquid films with or without interfacial shear for both heating or condensation. A modified Mudawwar and El-Masri's semi-empirical turbulence model, particularly to extend its use for the turbulent falling film with high interfacial shear, is used to replace the eddy viscosity model incorporated in the unified approach unposed by Yih and Liu. The liquid film thickness and asymptotic heat transfer coefficients against the film Reynolds number for wide range of interfacial shear predicted by both present and existing methods are compared with experimental data. The results show that in general, predictions of the modified model agee more closely with experimental data than that of existing models.

  • Small-scale shear flows are ubiquitous in the universe, and astrophysical plasmas are often magnetized. We study the thermal condensation instability in magnetized plasmas with shear flows in relation to filamentary structure formation in cool structures in the universe, representatively solar prominences and supernova remnants. A linear stability analysis is extensively performed in the framework of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with radiative cooling, plasma heating and anisotropic thermal conduction to find the eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions for the unstable modes. For a shear velocity less than the Alfven velocity of the background plasma, the eigenvalue with the maximum growth rate is found to correspond to a thermal condensation mode, for which the density and temperature variations are anti-phased (of opposite signs). Only when the shear velocity in the k-direction is near zero, the eigenfunctions for the condensation mode are of smooth sinusoidal forms. Otherwise each eigenfunction for density and temperature is singular and of a discrete form like delta functions. Our results indicate that any non-uniform velocity field with a magnitude larger than a millionth of the Alfven velocity can generate discrete eigenfunctions of the condensation mode. We therefore suggest that condensation at discrete layers or threads should be quite a natural and universal process whenever a thermal instability arises in magnetized plasmas.
