  • Elastic-plastic shear buckling behaviors of the web-post in a Castellated Steel Beam (CSB) with hexagonal web openings under vertical shear force were investigated further using Finite Element Model (FEM) based on a sub-model, which took the upper part of the web-post under horizontal shear force to represent the whole web-post under vertical shear force. A simplified design method for the web-post elastic-plastic shear buckling strength was proposed based on simulation results of the sub-model. Proper boundary conditions were applied to the sub-model to assure that its behaviors were identical to those of the whole web-post. The equation to calculate the thin plate elastic shear buckling strength was adopted as the basic form to build the design equation for elastic-plastic buckling strength of the sub-model. Parameters that might affect the elastic-plastic shear buckling strength of the whole web-post were studied. After obtaining the vertical shear buckling strength of a sub-model through FEM, the shear buckling coefficient k can be obtained through the back analysis. A practical calculation method for k was proposed through curving fitting the parameter study results. The elastic-plastic shear buckling strength of the web-post calculated using the proposed shear buckling coefficient k agreed well with that obtained from the FEM and test results. And it was more precise than those obtained from EC3 based on the strut model.

  • The effect of high shear speed on shear force, shear energy and fracture surface was investigated for the solder joint of a $Sn-_{3.0}Ag-_{0.5}Cu$ ball. For both ENIG and OSP pads, the shear force increased with an increase in shearing speed to 0.3 m/s. However, for an ENEPIG pad, the shear force increased with an increase in shear speed to 0.6 m/s and kept almost constant afterward. The shear energy decreased with an increase in shearing speed for ENIG and OSP pads. For the ENEPIG pad, however, the shear energy almost remained constant in a shearing speed range 0.3-3.0 m/s. The fracture mode analysis revealed that the amount of brittle fracture for the ENIG and the OSP pads increased with shearing speed, and a complete brittle fracture appeared at 1.0 m/s for ENIG and 2.0 m/s for OSP. However, the ENEPIG pad showed only a ductile fracture until 0.25 m/s, and a full brittle fracture didn't occur up to 3.0 m/s. The fracture mode matched well with the shear energy. The results from the high speed shear test of SAC305 were similar to those of SAC105.

  • In this study, the seismic control performance of energy dissipation devices installed in a shear all-frame structure is investigated through nonlinear time history analysis of a 12-story building. Inelastic shear walls are modeled using the multiple vertical line element model (MVLEM) and inelastic columns and girders were modeled using fiber beam elements. For a seismic load increased by 38% compared to the design load, the seismic control performance was analyzed based on the results of a nonlinear time history analysis in terms of the inter-story drift, the story shear and the flexural strain. Friction type dampers was found to performs best if they are installed in the form of a brace adjacent to the shear wall with the friction force of 15 % of the maximum story shear force induced in the original building structure without dampers.

  • Electrorheological(ER) and magnetorheological(MR) fluid-based dampers are typically analyzed using Bingham-plastic shear model under quasi-steady fully developed flow conditions. A Herschel-Bulkley constitutive shear flow relationship is that the linear shear stress vs. strain rate behavior of Bingham model is replaced by a shear stress that is assumed to be proportional to a power law of shear rate. This power is called the flow behavior index. Depending on the value of the flow behavior index number, varying degrees of post-yield shear thickening or thinning behavior can be analyzed. But it is not practical to analyze the damping force in a flow mode damper using Herschel-Bulkley model because it is needed to solve a polynomial equation. A useful guide is suggested to analyze the damping force in a damper using the Herschel-Bulkley model.

  • Shear connector is the element which resist in the horizontal shear force between steel and concrete of composite members and the stud bolt is often used because of its constructional convenience and serviceability. Although the push-out test is the most common method to evaluate shear slip behaviour, it is suitable for only room temperature conditions. In this study, we investigated about shear force, temperature distribution and slip displacement of shear connector in high temperature through the modified push-out test with electronic furnace invented for steel part heating.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic responses of the multi-span continuous bridge with longitudinal shear keys. It is motivated by a need to understand the effects of longitudinal shear keys which may be used for the reduction of the longitudinal seismic force in continuous bridges. The results show that (1) The force reduction of fixed pier is proportional to the ratio of gap size and elastic maximum displacement of the bridges without shear keys ; (2) The thermal movement has little effect on the response of the continuous bridges with shear keys. Also the simplified equation is proposed to calculate the maximum response of the continuous bridges with longitudinal shear keys. The equation requires only the elastic analysis results of the bridge and the gap size between superstructure and shear keys.

  • During an earthquake, steel frame columns can be subjected to high axial forces combined with inelastic rotation demand resulting from story drift. Generally, the whole beam or component can be represented with one element. In elasto-plastic analysis, subdivision is necessary if the plastic deformation occurs within two ends of beams. If effects of the joint panel are necessarily considered in the analysis, the joint panel should be represented with an independent element. It is a special element to represent the shear deformation of the joint panel in the beam-column connection zone. Several analytical models for panel zone (PZ) behavior exist, in terms of shear force-shear distortion relationships. Among these models, the Krawinkler PZ model is the most popular one which is used in the AISC code. Some studies have pointed out that Krawinkler's model gives good results for the range of thin to medium column flanges thickness. This paper, introduces a new model to estimate the response of shear force-shear distortion for the PZ including column axial force. The model is applicable to both thin and thick column flange. To achieve an appropriate PZ mathematical model first, the effects of PZ strength and stiffness on connection response are parametrically studied using finite element models. More than one thousand and four-hundred beam-column connections are included in the parametric study, with varied parameters; then based on analytical results a simple mathematical model is presented. A comparison between the results of proposed method herein with FE analyses shows the average error especially in thick column flange is significantly reduced which demonstrates the accuracy, efficiency, and simplicity of the proposed model.

  • The object of the study is to discuss the effect of magic ink as a surface active substance on the mechanism of chip formation in oblique cutting. The Rehbinder effect has been known as a phenomenon that the mechanical strength reduces when the metal is coated with some surface active substances. In order to interpret these surface effects defined by Rehbinder, the influence on the shear strength of shear plane by coating surface active substances, cutting force by the depth of cut, surface roughness and hardness ratio were observed. The results are as follows: 1. By coating the magic ink on free surface of the forming chip, the effective shear angle increases, and the cuttinbg force and the deformed chip thickness decreases. 2. With the large inclination angle the effective shear angle increases, and the specific cutting force and the friction angle decrease. 3. Cutting of the coated surface improves the surface roughness and the hardness ratio drops, which means another Rehbinder effect.

  • Assessment of structural behaviour of corrosion affected structures is an important issue, which would help in making certain decisions pertaining to the inspection, repair, strengthening, replacement and demolition of such structures. The paper presents formulations to predict the loss of weight and the loss of cross-sectional area of the reinforcing bar undergoing corrosion based on the earlier study carried out by the present authors (Bhargava et al. 2006). These formulations have further been used to analytically evaluate the ultimate bending moment and ultimate shear force capacity of the corroded concrete beams. Results of the present study indicate that, a considerably good agreement has been observed between the experimental and the analytically predicted values for the weight loss and reduction in radius of the corroded reinforcing bars. A considerably good agreement has also been observed between the experimental and the analytically predicted values of ultimate bending moment and ultimate shear force capacity for the corroded concrete beams.

  • The torque-coefficient of torque-shear type high-strength bolts is affected by the environmental factors, such as 'wet', 'rust', 'exposure to air' and workability during tightening high strength bolts. It is difficult to assume the direct tension induced into the bolt due to variation of torque-coefficient for torque-shear type high-strength bolts. Therefore, it is essential to measure tension loads of bolts and to verify the clamping force under construction. In this study, the manufacture of trial product was planned to identify the induced force into the bolts. The algorithm for a trial product was composed of the relation between electricity energy taken from torque shear wrench and tension force from hydraulic tension meter. The regression analysis equation to measure the direct tension was derived by statistical analysis using Minitab program. It is considered that the trial product is reliable tool to evaluate the tension force comparable to a commercial torque wrench.
