  • In this study, a novel mountain train system was developed that can run along a steep gradient of 180 ‰ and sharp curve with a minimum radius of 10 m. For this novel mountain train, an embedded precast concrete rack rail track was implemented to share the track with an automobile road and increase constructability in mountainous regions. The embedded rack rail track is connected to a hydraulically stabilized base (HSB) layer with shear anchors, which must have sufficient longitudinal resistance because they bear most of the traction forces originated from the rack rail and longitudinal loads owing to the steep gradient. In addition, the damage to the shear anchor parts, including the surrounding concrete, must be strictly limited under the service load because the maintenance of shear anchors inside the track is extremely difficult after installation. In this study, the focus was made on the shear anchor behavior and design an embedded rack rail track, considering the serviceability and ultimate limit states. Accordingly, the design loads for mountain trains were established, and the serviceability criteria of the anchor were proposed. Subsequently, the resistance and damage of the shear anchors were evaluated and analyzed based on the results of several finite element analyses. Finally, the design method of the shear anchors for the embedded rack rail track was established and verified.

  • A new era of research has focused on examining the growth of change in drinking problems among the elderly. Thus, the purpose of the present study was two fold: (1) to investigate trajectories of drinking problems(CAGE) among the Korean elderly(age$${\geq_-}65$$); and (2) to identify the predicting factors for the intercept and the slope of alcohol problems using multi-level growth curve model. Data come from three waves(1st wave(2006)~3rd wave(2008) of the Korea Welfare Panel(KWP) study. The results indicated that the levels of drinking problems decreased over time and that age, gender, marital status, religion, poverty, self-rated health, and social relationship satisfaction were associated with the baseline CAGE. Further analysis showed that social relationship satisfaction affected the declining slope of drinking problems over time. Specifically, among those who satisfied social relationship, there was a sharp decline of CAGE over time. Overall findings highlight the importance of developing and implementing effective alcohol prevention programs for the elderly in the community settings to mitigate the harmful effects of various psycho-social stressors. Especially, programs to maintain and form healthy social support network are suggested as critical interventions for prevention as well as recovery of alcohol problems in late life.

  • In this study, loading tests and a strength evaluation of the bogie frame were conducted to verify the structural safety of the bogie system in an intermodal tram, which runs with cars on a road track. The loads were calculated taking into account the features of the road track with many sharp curves and steep gradients, which are different from the track of conventional railway. They were compared with the loads specified in the previous standard specifications. After the comparison, it was confirmed that the loads acting on the bogie system operating on a road track are slightly different from the specified loads. The specified vertical load of the standard specification for all kinds of trains is conservative, but the specified lateral and longitudinal loads are less than the calculated loads. The application of the actual loads was proven to be reasonable in the development of a new railway system. Based on the defined loads, the bogie frame was fabricated on which strain gauges were attached. It was set on the large loading frame so that the stresses could be measured when loads were applied by hydraulic actuators. After measuring the stresses, it was shown that they were below the allowable stress, which verified the structural safety of the bogie frame.

  • The luminescence spectra of $Ru(bpy)_3^{2+}$ in poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) solutions varied sensitively with pH. At pH < 5.5, the emission intensity increased with pH up to 4 times, while it decreased with pH beyond the pH. The enhanced emission intensity was accompanied by blue-shift of the emission maxima as much as 15 nm. The enhancement of emission intensity was attributed to the restricted rotational mobility of ligand of the cation bound to densely coiled PMA molecules at pH < 5.5. The sharp decrease in emission intensity with increasing pH near pH 5.6 was accounted for conformational transition of the polymer to more extended structure, which was also revealed in viscosity measurement. The enhancement of emission intensity became higher as NaCl concentration of the solution increased. The binding constant of $Ru(bpy)_3^{2+}$ with two carboxylate groups of PMA was calculated as $2{\times}10^5\;M^{-1}$ in 0.1 M NaCl at pH 5.2. The pH dependence of luminescence quenching rate of $Ru(bpy)_3^{2+}$ by $Cu^{++}$ also showed maximum near pH 5, and the rate was more than $10^3$ times higher than that in water, whereas the maximum enhancement of quenching rate (about 20 times) in poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) solution occurred at pH 4.5. On the other hand, the pH dependence for neutral water soluble nitrobenzene (NB) exhibited opposite trend to that of $Cu^{++}$. The quenching constant vs pH curve for $MV^{++}$ was composite of those for $Cu^{++}$ and NB. The anomalous high quenching rate for $Cu^{++}$ in PMA solution at pH < 5.5 was attributed to the binding of $Ru(bpy)_3^{2+}$ and $Cu^{++}$ to the same region of PMA, when it conforms densely coiled structure in the pH range. The observation of mininium quenching rate for NB near pH 5.5 indicated that the $Ru(bpy)_3^{2+}$ bound to the densely coiled PMA is not accessible by NB, which is in bulk water phase. The composite nature of the pH dependence of quenching rate for $MV^{++}$ in PMA solution was attributed to the smaller binding affinity of the cation to PMA, compared to that of $Cu^{++}$. The sharp, cooperative conformational transition with pH observed in PMA was not revealed in PAA. But, the pH dependence of quenching rates in this polymer reflected increased charge density and, thus, binding of cations to the polymer, and expansion of the polymer chain with pH.

  • GaN nucleation layers were grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) and the effect of growth temperature on the structural properties of GaN nucleation layers for nanorods was investigated by synchrotron x-ray scattering and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). For the samples grown at different temperatures, two-component rocking profiles of (002) GaN Bragg peaks for the GaN nucleation layers were observed with one very sharp and the other broad. It was shown that the two-component rocking profile could be qualitatively explained by surface morphology, which was in good agreement with AFM result, from which we could conclude that relatively low temperature is favorable for GaN nanorods formation.

  • This study aimed to examine the treatment effect of Muraenesox cinereus extract product combined with high frequency on men's damaged skin. The subjects were treated by a product containing M. cinereus extract combined with high frequency therapy for six weeks and tested in skin condition. First, for moisture level change, there was no significant difference between the control group treated only by high frequency therapy and the experimental group treated by a M. cinereus extract product combined with high frequency therapy. But the subjects who increased consistently in moisture level in the cheek and chin were more common in the experimental group. Second, for an oil level, prominently high increase was found in both the control group and the experimental group. Finally, for a rough level, while there was little difference in the control group between immediately after peeling and after six weeks, high improvement effect on a curve was found in the experimental group. Based on this result, cosmetics using M. cinereus extract may have a positive effect on men's skin which is exposed to several stress factors. Accordingly, this result will contribute to developing men's functional cosmetics.

  • Various species of the genus Capsicum contain in their fruits an intensively sharp and pungent substance, Capsaicin, which was first isolated in an almost pure state by Thresh. Containing the pungent principle, Capsicums are used extensively in food as a spice and in medicine as a rubefacient and carminative. Numerous methods have been proposed for the isolation, the chemical structure and the quantitative determination of Capsaicin. Modifying the several methods described before, the Capsaicin contents in various species of the genus Capsicum were determined as follows. (1) The isolation of pure Capsaicin was the essential first step for the determination of Capsaicin contents. Powdered cayenne pepper was extracted with acetone. By the method of ether alkali partition extraction slightly modified at this laboratory and by the recrystallization with light petroleum ether that was repeated ten times, the pure crystalline Capsaicin was obtained. Using this Capsaicin, the standard absorption curve was drawn with Beckman spectrophotometer model DU for the quantitative determination of Capsaicin. 92) The powdered sample was extracted in a Soxhlet extractor with ether-acetone solvent system(3:1) for 25 hours. Capsaicin in this ether-acetone extracts was efficiently separated in a pure state by paper partition chromatography using 58% methanol solution as developing agent. It was found that 58% methanol was one of the most valuable solvent to separate Capsaicin from impurities such as sterols, fatty acids, waxes and carotenoid pigments. (3) The colorimetric method modifying the Schulte-Kruger's method which consists of measuring the red color produced with diazobenzenesulphonic acid was used. Capsaicin in various species of the genus Capsicum was determined quantitatively with use of Beckman spectrophotometer model DU at $480\;m{\mu}$.

  • The ultraviolet and infrared spectra of dioxane lignin from bamboo were investigated. 1. Spectrum curve type considerably resembled that of wood lignin. There were 3 absorption peak positions at 210nm(max. peak), at 260-270nm(shallow mini. peak), at 280nm(lower max. peak) as in the wood lignin spectra. 2. The lower minimum peak near at 280 nm is the typical peak of lignin. This peak does not exist exactly at 280 nm but from 282nm to 285nm in this bamboo UV spectra. The absorption intensities are equal in this region and the peak is not sharp. 3. The absorption band of aromatic nucleus is near at wave number $1550cm^{-1}$ in the IR spectra of bamboo lignin. The intensity at about 1040-$1130cm^{-1}$ and at about 1230-$1275cm^{-1}$ were similar in the hardwood lignin but reverse to that of softwood lignin spectrum.

  • Carapace width (CW) of main size class of the snow crab was 70~90 mm for females and 80~100 mm for males. The CW holds a stronger relation with body weight than that of carapace length (CL). The number of eggs attached to the pleopods was in the range of 35,000 and 114,000 eggs in crabs with 65 and 88 mm CW, respectively). The logistic maturity curve on morphometric measurements and gonad examination, defined by the presence of egg brooding in wide abdomen of the female and spermatophores inside the vasa deferentia of the male indicated that 50 % of crabs attained gonadal maturity at 54.2 mm and 58.8 mm CW for females and males, respectively. In the relationship between CW and body weight, a sharp break at 53~55 mm CW indicates that morphological changes associated with maturity have occurred.

  • The effects of phenothiazine derivatives and calcium on the thermotropic phase transition of bilayers in dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA) liposomes were investigated with differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Bilayers underwent an abrupt organizational changes at a characteristic temperature when heated. Such temperature-dependent transition was particularly striking and sharp in the bilayers prepared from pure phospholipids. The ability of phenothiazine derivatives to modify the phase transition of phospholipids liposomes was measured by a broadening of the phase transition profile, that transition began to appear at lower temperature than which occurs in untreated liposomes. Calcium ion caused a large upward shift in the transition temperature of DPPC:DPPA (34:66mol%) liposomes. When the liposomes were first incubated with calcium ion followed by phenothiazine derivatives, disappearance of the broad curve centering at $73^{\circ}C$ indicated displacement of calcium ion by phenothiazine derivatives at the anionic site. It is supposed that calcium ion and phenothiazine derivatives might compete with each other on the head group of acidic phospholipid.
